My parents literally installed that brown carpet themselves... by choice... with their own hands... both nonsmokers
This reminds me of a house I lived in which was built in 1963.
Upstairs, the prior owners had installed snow-white wall to wall carpet which was dingy grey within a year of being soiled by toddlers and dogs. So we pulled it up, and beneath the carpet was original hardwood -- with staple marks all over it from the goddamn carpet.
So downstairs was originally an unfinished basement which they finished into 4 rooms plus a bathroom (it was a huge basement). When we moved in, there was industrial-grade carpet like you would see in an Office Space type environment.
We ended up having a burst pipe down there, so we went to remove the carpet. When we pulled it back, it exposed something like this:
That of course was a HELL no. So we pulled that layer up as well.
And
that was how we found the asbestos tile.
