Too close to call. This might be the most level WJC field ever.

Given the history of the tournament it isn't saying much but you could be right. Not that long ago the Czechs and Finns were awful (both seemingly went in the tank at around the same time Sweden stopped being terrible) and the likely relegation candidates were losing games 15-1. Slovakia and Switzerland each taking a turn making a run to the SF helped a bit in masking how thin things really were. I think over the past 2 or 3 years things have trended towards a more competitive tournament. Finland won last year and in general seem to have started to produce more than just goalies again and the Czechs have gone from being awful to at least erratic and now have a group of players coming through who have done nothing but win medals at U18 tournaments. By the sounds of things Germany and Denmark have two of the stronger 'yoyo team' lineups in recent times as well.

I've never been someone who considers the tournament the highlight of the year, I have generally been at best lukewarm about it (and found the coverage of it almost insufferable), but I think it could grab my interest this year.

Very well written. 100% correct. And I wish more people realized this. Especially Canadian fans. The competition is getting so much stronger. That is why things haven't been as successful for Canada recently. Instead of criticizing hockey Canada, every single year they don't win, they should open their eyes. Even the U.S. wasn't very dominant until Patrick Kane came around.

Time for a holy crap, you cannot be serious, you're out of your mind, that would not happen if we played this tournament a million times prediction.

*Note: not what I actually think will happen of course

Group A:
Canada 3-0-1-0
Finland 3-1
USA 2-1-0-1
Germany 1-3
Slovakia 0-4

Group B:
Czech Republic 3-1
Sweden 2-2
Denmark 2-2
Switzerland 2-2
Russia 1-3

QF:
Canada d. Switzerland
Denmark d. Finland
USA d. Sweden
Czech Republic d. Germany

SF:
Canada d. USA
Denmark d. Czech Republic

Bronze: USA d. Czech Republic
Gold: Canada d. Denmark

Relegation: Slovakia d. Russia

1. Canada
2. Denmark
3. USA
4. Czech Republic
5. Finland
6. Sweden
7. Switzerland
8. Germany
9. Slovakia
10. Russia

I like Denmark, think they're underrated, they might be able to pull off a win somewhere and sneak into the QF, but obviously this prediction is just over the top.

As for Russia being relegated, before Russia fans come here saying I know nothing about the team, it isn't as much me picking on Russia, it's just I think it'd be awesome to see a big 6 nation get relegated(one that isn't Canada), and I think someone from pool B has the best chance(which is still not good but best chance probably ever) at that if Denmark and Switzerland can steal their QF spot, and Slovakia loses to Germany and then plays out of their minds to avoid relegation. Just picked Russia really, could have been any of the 3 there.

This result will be the same as this year's Olympics-

Canada (GOLD)
Sweden (Silver)
Finland (Bronze)- beats Team USA in the Bronze Medal Game

There's a higher chance Canada will continue their medal drought than Russia relegated...

Seriously ridiculous post...Russia won the Super Series and just defeated Canada in a friendly. We got your number guys..

...and there it is. A Russian takes offense to the random choosing of Russia as a relegation team in an exercise designed only to illustrate what it would take for an elite team to get relegated. :shakehead

As for the game tonight, congratulations on the win. However, if that's the type of effort we can expect from the Russians during the tournament, you better hope your goalie stays hot or we may be taking a closer look at that relegation scenario again.

did you even read the entire post or just see Russia at 10 and decide to mouth off to me about my obviously eccentric prediction?

USA over Canada for Gold
Finns over Swedes for Bronze

Probably more with my heart than my head, though....

Yup, and then Union State of Russia and Belarus will be transformed into country, which would mean Russia will stay in Top Division for next year.

Gold: Czech Republic

Best Forward: Gauthier

But seriously tho,

I think you are scared of Russia.

If you bothered to even read the post you would know that it has absolutely nothing to do with Russia, I just think it would be kinda cool to see a top team relegated. I think that the botom part of group B has the potential to pull a few upsets so it's more likely there than group a. I'm a Leafs fan so I want Nylander to succeed, and the Czechs don't normally do well so it's be nice if they succeeded as well, that leaves Russia. If Russia and USA were switched I would have put USA being relegated in that post.
