I genuinely enjoyed Errey's time but "bright" is definitely not the first word I'd use to describe him
Compared to other color comms? Easily top 5 insight level about the game.
Army is gonna be bottom-third. He thinks like a drunk frat boy. He doesn't belong in this role. He doesn't even have experience doing it in lesser leagues.
This is just a shit decision.

How does the board feel about Mike Rupp? I wouldn't mind Colby/Rupp both getting a trial run this year if one can't go full time.
Yeah now Rupp makes a lot more sense.

Agree to disagree I guess. I would describe Errey as more emotional than cerebral.

What kind of broadcast or commentary experience did Errey have we he was named to the radio team in 99? Genuinely don't know.

Colby's done what, 2 years of in-studio work with some between the benches broadcasts? In addition to his national work with TNT. That's not nothing.

What's different about NESN? How does these moves make it similar to NESN?

I'm talking about swapping the game crew. No NESN people are calling the games.

Fine. It's not nothing. It's just not close to enough. He needed years in a lesser league imo.
I don't remember Errey's beginnings in broadcasting, but I know he has a much bigger hockey brain than Colby, so there was a better foundation there at least.

If you want Colby I'm not gonna shame you for it, even if I don't understand it. I think he's gonna sound like an awkward amateur, much like the color comms doing Seattle.

I like Army and wish him the best though. Maybe he'll surprise.

I'm a little disturbed by your affinity for Errey. Lange in his prime I could see, but Errey? blah

I make it a point to try many different broadcasts throughout the season. Errey is straight up one of the better ones. Smarter, more creative, more cultural, smoother, faster, funnier. I say that as objectively as I can. The bar just isn't high. They choose a lot of awful ones.

Guess who's back? Mearsy's back.

Basically, we're getting a swap of play-by-play guys and a new color analyst on TV. The only guy who actually lost his job is Errey.

And that's the only guy that should have kept his job.

He really is. He's not even that much of a homer either like he got shit for. Literally the only guy that deserves to keep his job was let go for what reason?

I think with Colby I just don't get the sense that he's as quick in the uptake as Errey. Maybe part of that comes from inexperience being a color guy. But any time he gets between the benches I feel like there's long stretches of him just saying nothing.

Which y'know I'm fine with as I'd rather him say nothing than be annoying lol. And when he does speak up he's generally funny which is good.

But I wonder if he's quick enough mentally to fill in the gaps like a #1 color guy has to.

Yes, exactly. There's a raw intelligence gap, and that's not gonna go away. We know who Colby is. He hasn't changed much.
I'm sure he'll improve over time, in his way, but he's never gonna be as good as Errey at this job.
Colby fits in a more simpleton role, like Potash's job he did for years. He can get guys to open up. He's also good for levity at intermissions and pre-game. He can tell good stories and keep it loose. Those are his strengths.

Analysis though? Helping new fans learn about the game? No.
Maybe us as hardcore fans don't need him to do that, but many do. Errey was certainly very educative for casuals, and he has a good sense of humor like Colby anyway.

I've seen enough of Colby in Spittin Chiclets and stuff to know. He's super basic in his opinions. There's a lot of cobwebs up in the attic. He can be ok in the 3rd man role like last season, injecting personality. That's it.

I have liked Mike Rupp when I see him on television, and his segments on NHL Radio are brilliant.

They're going to hire as many Boston area idiots as possible. Soon.

Teams owning their own broadcasting and network is good and bad. Bad is they control the entire narrative now. The good is at least the market will get games and you'll get alumni showing up more but again, it's going to be constant bs about the Pens coach never doing wrong an the players being the issue as the narrative.

The best was seeing TK saying what everyone that isn't an idiot wanted to say about the coach. Now no one will.

I bet fat blowhards Rossi and Yohe wish they were hired by Sportsnet Pittsburgh so they can at least feel accomplished for being bollocks deep for pandering to the Pens narratives to shield Sully.

NESN has a large rotating cast of former Red Sox who contribute to the broadcast. Youkilis, Millar, Middlebrooks, Merloni, Wakefield. What we're learning about the rumored changes for the Pens broadcast sounds a bit like that. Couple guys with World Series credentials and goodwill with the fanbase, not unlike a Kennedy or a Talbot here.

Some of those guys (ie Millar with MLB Network) balance national broadcast roles kind of like Army and Rupp would. Maybe that's what FSG is going for?

We already had that. Errey, Caufield are alums. Every broadcast team has alums. Maybe you're right about guys who are also national. I don't know. Nothing screams NESN about taking the radio guy and making him the TV guy.

Maybe after a ban of that length not come back with that type of attitude? You don't have to agree with people here, I don't, but you could be a bit more diplomatic and congenial in your approach. If not maybe you get banned again?
