I've always suspected that a lot of people who didn't like Avery--didn't like him not just because of his persona on the ice but because of his non conformity not only as a player but as an individual person off the ice. He wasn't someone they would think was a good example for young children to follow as if others for instance Chris Drury (who had a blah personality but was Captain America) were. Avery didn't strike them as respectable--an ordinary type who would marry a just as respectable woman, have two or three children with her, buy a house in the suburbs--kind of like Martin Brodeur--go to church every Sunday and never have any run ins with the law (for playing music too loud or some such ****) and live a pretty much ho hum existence outside of the rink.

To me Avery was a player who stirred a lot of turds on the ice--he'd piss other teams off so much that he'd sometimes almost singlehandedly would turn a game into a real war and the thing was when that happened the Rangers almost always won. He made a lot of games a little bit more than just ho hum affairs. He was also a pretty good player--though towards the end of his career his defensive play kind of went south. I always thought though that his remarks on hockey and life in general were rather refreshing considering the often blasé cliches you'd generally get from the rest of the team. A player actually implying that there might be other things in life as important to him as hockey--WTF!

I was and still am a big fan of Sean Avery. He is very outspoken and supports many of the human rights issues that I do. Seems to be a very decent fellow.

More like there's something to be said for the unpredictability/entertainment factor when it comes to watching hockey.

I'd wager that the vast majority of hockey fans would have no clue as to the martial status of most players and that they couldn't care less unless there was some kind of affair/scandal that might distract the player from playing hockey. Likewise, their choice of music wouldn't be too important, nor how loud they played it. As for the whole going to church thing, wasn't Grimaldi (spelling?) talked down a fair bit for his beliefs prior to the draft?

Most people that I've talked to dislike Avery because he couldn't stay out of the penalty box, he couldn't stay onside most shifts and he seemed to have no real interest in doing the 'team' thing unless it directly benefited him as well. There are reasons he isn't in the league any more, and none of them have to do with who he is sleeping with or how often the cops ask him to turn down his ipod

Well actually you make some good points there. I guess, yeah, from the on ice hockey standpoint he was a bit lacking, but damn he was fun to watch (when he wasn't pissing you off)

Just realized that MSG wont be broadcasting one single game in the series agains Penguins.....

I am not speaking for others who didn't like Avery, but I hated him for having real abilities and not maximizing them. He seemed more concerned with being a character than a player. His first year here he was a real player and a great asset.

The other thing I could not stand about him was his perpetually causing offsides. Never understood why he could not get that concept down.

True that he had that tendency to go offsides. You're a little unfair on the maximizing of his abilities. As a hockey player he pretty much turned himself from a borderline NHL'er to a pretty good player. He was not a drafted guy you know. He was a CHL free agent that the Red Wings took a chance on. There's not that many CHL free agents that accomplished as much as he did over the course of a career. I think he had a number of good years for us.

At the end I think his wars with Tortorella became a distraction. The offsides you talk about were for real --his defensive play in his last year was atrocious. He was done more or less.

Thank you very much to both "bulseyes" and you:nod:

Except for the last 10 days, the pens seems to be much more rested. Hope Rangers can do this in five. They could need some rest before habs or bruins

...so Sam Rosen won't get to say "and this one will also last a lifetime"? :-(

If we're lucky enough to end up in the finals and win, Sam will probably do those games for a DVD special or something. The guy who does the LA Kings games did that for their cup run in 2012.

Someone here suggested that the TV broadcasters should offer a choice of the network announcers, the home or the away crew. I think that would be great innovative idea. Won't happen.

MSL with the right focus, one game at a time. Forget about the schedule

Damn, I'm almost done guys ... exhausted as a mother. Hope the Rangers are not, hope they are fresh and ready to kill.

Leeet's get reeeady toooo ruuuumbleeeee !!!!!

LGR !!!!
