How is it defenseless when the hitter is coming from the direction Minty is skating towardsHow does describing what body parts are contacting each other have anything to do with whether a player is defenseless or not?
He's trying to shoot the puck in while gaining the red line. Not ready for a hit.
In my opinion the leaf player needs to realize that and also realize that he's a dangerous distance from the boards and not take the body there, just go for the stick check and deny him the red line. It looks like icing should have been called on the play because i don't see him gaining the red line.
Unnecesssary hit.
Just a note, the rule is not injury = 5 minute major + game although that's how referees frequently call it.In this thread, a lot of people who don’t understand what boarding is or why a 5 minute major and a game misconduct are called.
Let’s have a look at the checklist…
-Shooting the puck in and off-balance so defenseless? Check.
-Hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously? Check.
-Injury to the face or head? Yep, he had to get stitches because he hit his face on the dasher.
This is a textbook 5 minute major and game misconduct. If the referee thought he was trying to injure with the hit, then it would’ve been a match penalty. Had there been no injury it probably would’ve just been 2 minutes.
For everyone saying it’s shoulder to shoulder therefore it’s clean… if it was at open ice I would 100% agree that the hit would’ve been fine. They didn’t call charging or roughing, they called boarding because the hit resulted in a player going face first into the boards. The hitter is responsible for not throwing a hit that sends someone into the boards dangerously.

And why did he have to be off-balance and defenseless in that situation? It was a routine play, and getting hit there is extremely common. Why put yourself off-balance and defenseless in a situation where you're very likely to be hit?Let’s have a look at the checklist…
-Shooting the puck in and off-balance so defenseless? Check.
Did they call it boarding?
Hockey Canada's definition: a boarding penalty will be assessed to any Player who checks or pushes an unsuspecting opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously.
