How does describing what body parts are contacting each other have anything to do with whether a player is defenseless or not?

He's trying to shoot the puck in while gaining the red line. Not ready for a hit.

In my opinion the leaf player needs to realize that and also realize that he's a dangerous distance from the boards and not take the body there, just go for the stick check and deny him the red line. It looks like icing should have been called on the play because i don't see him gaining the red line.

Unnecesssary hit.
How is it defenseless when the hitter is coming from the direction Minty is skating towards

In this thread, a lot of people who don’t understand what boarding is or why a 5 minute major and a game misconduct are called.

Let’s have a look at the checklist…
-Shooting the puck in and off-balance so defenseless? Check.
-Hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously? Check.
-Injury to the face or head? Yep, he had to get stitches because he hit his face on the dasher.

This is a textbook 5 minute major and game misconduct. If the referee thought he was trying to injure with the hit, then it would’ve been a match penalty. Had there been no injury it probably would’ve just been 2 minutes.

For everyone saying it’s shoulder to shoulder therefore it’s clean… if it was at open ice I would 100% agree that the hit would’ve been fine. They didn’t call charging or roughing, they called boarding because the hit resulted in a player going face first into the boards. The hitter is responsible for not throwing a hit that sends someone into the boards dangerously.

Just a note, the rule is not injury = 5 minute major + game although that's how referees frequently call it.

The rule is that the choice between 2 and 5 minutes is *entirely* up to how severe the referee felt the contact was. *If* the referee feels the contact is severe enough for a 5 minute major and there *also* happens to be a head/face injury, then a game misconduct must also be given.

In practice, referees almost always call a major if there's an injury, but by rule they could have called a 2 minute minor here regardless of the injury if they felt the contact with the boards wasn't violent enough.

Also I think it's a little funny that the reason the hit looked/was so bad was because the player was turning so he wouldn't get hit, which also mean that he didn't get to center ice before dumping the puck in, but the linesman standing 5 feet away just waives off icing anyway.

Alright, Mr. Rulebook man,

Can you find the rule about when a hit can be delivered and not considered too late?

Based on this rule 41, when Gudas hit a defenseless Kampf in the playoffs last May, he should have been ejected from the game.

The play had been blown dead for nearly 2 seconds before the contact was made, and Kampf was therefore both ineligible to be hit and subsequently defenseless.
The hit was just as much a blind-side hit as McMann's was last night.
The hit was just as violent as McMann's hit last night.
Kampf had to leave the game to be put in concussion protocol and therefore there was an injury on the play.

Here, I'll post a video of the hit for you.

And why did he have to be off-balance and defenseless in that situation? It was a routine play, and getting hit there is extremely common. Why put yourself off-balance and defenseless in a situation where you're very likely to be hit?

Let's imagine he saw the guy coming and went against the boards and received the hit. What happens then? He receives the hit, doesn't even fall, and the play continues, as expected.

Sometimes I feel like the players don't care about their own wellbeing at all.

Nothing wrong with this hit. Should have been 0 PIM and certainly no GM.

Did they call it boarding?

Hockey Canada's definition: a boarding penalty will be assessed to any Player who checks or pushes an unsuspecting opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently or dangerously.

Yes was for boarding. I’m not sure what they want him to do in that situation though because Minty turns at the last second. He ended up being fine, and I don’t think even missed a shift.
