Take hitting out of the game or have a player hold up an I'm ready sign when he wants to be hit?

Who cares if he's ready - he's eligible to be hit in the shoulder while playing the puck

Correct.

However, if that same shoulder to shoulder hit propels a player hard into the boards from a distance, it's gonna get called most of the time.

How does describing what body parts are contacting each other have anything to do with whether a player is defenseless or not?

He's trying to shoot the puck in while gaining the red line. Not ready for a hit.

In my opinion the leaf player needs to realize that and also realize that he's a dangerous distance from the boards and not take the body there, just go for the stick check and deny him the red line. It looks like icing should have been called on the play because i don't see him gaining the red line.

Unnecesssary hit.
Thats literally the point of the play. If you want to gain the red line you have to pay for it.

NHL officiating is inconsistent across the board. 32 fan bases have fans that believe the refs are out to screw them.

Losers make excuses. Champions overcome.
Isn't the inconsistency a problem, though?

It's also a message board, the whole point is to discuss things like this. Do you drop the 'you're losers' mindset into every thread?

How is shoulder to shoulder defenseless?

To me it's not that it's shoulder to shoulder, it's just that the hit happens an awkward distance from the boards and he goes in awkwardly to them. That hit could happen 10 times and see a whole bunch of different results, and probably not result in a penalty.

I see nothing malicous about the play.

If he doesn’t want to take that hit, maybe don’t try and gain the red line to dump it.

Players get hit all the time while shooting or passing, hitting a player in the action of them doing that doesn’t make them defense less.

This isn’t even worthy of a 2, and definitely not a 5.

As it's been explained in this thread, if a player is that distance from the boards and is deemed 'defenseless' (such as being in a shooting motion) and you hit them and cause them to go hard into the boards, there's a large chance you'll get called for boarding.

There's a time and place to make guys pay, you obviously have to pick your spots. Maybe you get away with that hit sometimes, but more often you wont.

See my reply above. This is a pretty standard boarding example. It's the combination of being defeneless, distance from the boards and going hard into the boards.

All right calls, except the ten min misconduct on Lybushkin. Wtf was that for? He already got a 5+2?

I thought it was borderline enough to be boarding. The 5 minutes and a game was silly imo.

What's really stupid is we are going to see a dozen hits like that or worse come playoffs and none of them will be called (league wide, not just with the Leafs.)

I think we can argue whether 5 and a game was warranted, but it’s super clear it’s boarding. Shoulder to shoulder has nothing to do with this, it was that danger zone distance from boards and angle…that’s a boarding penalty 100% of the time or should be, if seen and called correctly

Agreed.

Debate the penalty severity but that’s pretty clearly boarding

Good hit with an unfortunate outcome. Shoulder to shoulder contact that sent the guy flying
