I think Keith and Seabrook is more appropriate.

McDonagh and Subban could've been the next Suter and Weber.
And what did Nashville do with their Elite goalie and Elite defensemen? Off the top of my head their greatest accomplishment was winning one playoff series vs Detroit. They had no centre that could take the team on his back in the playoffs.
Does Boston, LA, or Chicago have two Elite defensemen? No. They each have one Elite defenseman and they've all found a solid #2 to go with him. Similarly, we have our Elite defenseman and just need to find a solid linemate for him whether it's Gorges, Tinordi, Beaulieu, or whoever.
Those 3 teams also have their respective #1 centre who can be relied on year in year out to help them make the playoffs and then elevate their games in the playoffs. They can control the play, dominate the offensive zone, score timely goals, win key faceoffs, kill penalties, and produce on the PP.
Montreal is just missing that piece to become a perennial contender. Hopefully, we have it in Galchenyuk. He did not go 3rd overall for no reason. This kid is a gamer and has all the tools to become a franchise, dare I say Elite, centreman. And best of all, he WANTS to become one of the best players in the league.
In a sense, the question is not even completely rigorous. 2012 would still have been a ****fest even with McDonagh in the lineup. No 3rd overall for sure, but we'd still have a good pick from that draft.
So yeah, right now it's McD and the lower 2012 pick. No questions. We'd be serious contenders with him in the lineup.
