McDonagh or Galchenyuk.

Have to go with McDonagh here... he's already a Norris candidate on defense, a league-wide star player. We're all hopeful that Galchenyuk will be a star too, but until he does, there is a risk component present that simply isn't there with McDonagh.

Curse you, Bob Gainey. Again. :(

Remember Pacioretty at Galchenyuk's age? He was still filling out, developing and no where near where Galchenyuk already is at that age.

I don't mean to say that means Galchenyuk will be better, different players develop differently, but he went 3rd for a reason. He's as close to a sure thing as we've had since Price. It may not be this year or next, but by the time he's 24-25 and a fully grown man watch out.

This isn't Kostitsyn, this guy has all the tools a tool box and a is a master engineer at 20 years old. All he needs is experience and age to progress.

I vote Galchenyuk easily. McDonagh is overrated, no doubt he's a great d-man and the Rangers stole him, but as much as I hate that trade, I'd hate to see Galchenyuk traded a lot more, or Subban, or Price.

If McDonagh progressed the same way with us as he has the Rangers, how can you possibly go against having two top 10 defensemen in the lineup, and probably on the same pairing?

In five years, maybe my answer will change. Until then, it's McDonagh for me.

McDonagh - Subban
Markov - Emelin
Gorges - Tinordi/Beaulieu/Weaver

*drool*

McDonagh and Subban could've been the next Suter and Weber.

And what did Nashville do with their Elite goalie and Elite defensemen? Off the top of my head their greatest accomplishment was winning one playoff series vs Detroit. They had no centre that could take the team on his back in the playoffs.

Does Boston, LA, or Chicago have two Elite defensemen? No. They each have one Elite defenseman and they've all found a solid #2 to go with him. Similarly, we have our Elite defenseman and just need to find a solid linemate for him whether it's Gorges, Tinordi, Beaulieu, or whoever.

Those 3 teams also have their respective #1 centre who can be relied on year in year out to help them make the playoffs and then elevate their games in the playoffs. They can control the play, dominate the offensive zone, score timely goals, win key faceoffs, kill penalties, and produce on the PP.

Montreal is just missing that piece to become a perennial contender. Hopefully, we have it in Galchenyuk. He did not go 3rd overall for no reason. This kid is a gamer and has all the tools to become a franchise, dare I say Elite, centreman. And best of all, he WANTS to become one of the best players in the league.

All fairness, Nashville has an internal cap. They can't spend to the cap like a team like the Habs can or those other teams you mentioned (Boston and Chicago, not sure about Los Angeles).

McDonagh AINEC. Not even ****ing close.

Edit: Because you said you didn't want answers like "Galchy AINEC or McDo AINEC", I'd say that you build a hockey team with some good or great defensemen first. That's the most important part.

McD based on what we know today. Not really a fair question though... Galchenyuk is just getting started.

I think as things stand right now, most of us would take Mcdo over Chucky.

However Im also pretty sure that in 4 or 5 years, all of us will pretty much regret having done that

Most obvious statement ever coming......

I remember when we drafted McDonagh and all the talk about how awesome he was going to be....he at the time was considered a top d prospect and we were all salivating about his potential. Then.....we traded him for Scott Gomez.....and we all thought....did that just happen? Then Gomez absolutely sucked for us, while McDonagh career path took the expected and projected path.

:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

I don't think I have ever got that off my chest.....I haven't been able to talk about it until now.

As for the OP......

Chucky has a higher ceiling so, I'll take him.....AIVC (and its very close)

hard to compare to be honest.. one didnt enter the league until he was 21... the other has played 2 season and just turned 20..

would like to see Chucky at 24

Well today its hands down McDo. The way the team is playing and with Vanek , McDo would make us Cup contenders, today.

Future wise who knows. Bird in hand you know, and I would take McDo on that basis.

McDo always comes up, its like when we gave away Roy, Leclair etc, knowing he should be on this team eats at our soul. Maybe we should hope MB goes to Sather and pays whatever kings ransom to get this guy back.

At this point, McDonagh and whoever Habs take with the lower 2012 pick (Teuvo Teravainen based on the rumours Habs really liking him at the draft) would be better than Galchenyuk.

Galchenyuk would have to become high end player to make this even close which is asking a lot from any young player.

In a sense, the question is not even completely rigorous. 2012 would still have been a ****fest even with McDonagh in the lineup. No 3rd overall for sure, but we'd still have a good pick from that draft.

So yeah, right now it's McD and the lower 2012 pick. No questions. We'd be serious contenders with him in the lineup.

With the management team we have now and the moves they have made, I would have to go with McD.
If you look at our team now without Gally, could you imagine that team with McD.

Not 3rd overall, but probably still top 10. Forsberg, Girgensons, Grigorenko, Wilson, Hertl and Terevainen were all taken after the 10th overall pick.

McDonagh + one of them or Galchenyuk. Damn.

McDonagh for me and its really not close

this team's defense sucks and mcdonagh is exactly what it needs
Subban-McDonagh
Markov-Emelin
Gorges-(tinordi or murray or beaulieu)

is an insane defense..
the habs would pretty much be a real cup contender with him and im not even joking
