McD has been getting better & better since he became a Ranger. As great as he has been playing I get sad when i think of how solid he & Sauer were as a pair, & what could have been had Sauer stayed healthy. We could have been set for a decade with a McD/Sauer & Girardi/Staal paring.

Because as good as McD has been we have never had a soild everyday partner for him since Sauer was injured.

What does Suter do better? I'm honestly curious, this isn't a "no way McDonagh is at least as good as Suter!" I just don't watch Suter enough to be able to compare them a lot.

McDonagh is currently ahead of Suter in points this year, and we know he's one of the best defensive guys around too...Suter plays an absolute ton of minutes though (I think he's averaging like 29 minutes per game or something stupidly insane). Not sure how to compare their defensive games. Before this season I would have said Suter is more confident with the puck and makes things happen but I think McDonagh might have taken that step

Suter is a rock on the back end. He is smart, a great skater and has strong offensive instincts. He is also tougher than he looks. Mac is on that track, but due to having less experience, he's not quite there yet IMO.

Keith is NOT overrated.

Jesus.

The guy anchored the defense of TWO Stanley Cup winner.

Seabrook is better defensively. I would argue he was the anchor. Keith is the flash and the cult hero in Canada, but he coughs up the puck too much and takes alot of risks (many which work out which is why he's a top offensive defenseman). McD is just missing the production. At 50 points he is the better player.

For the most part the described McDonagh to me at this point so yeah that's why I'm curious as to what the differences between them are in peoples minds.

Suter does obviously have the experience and track record

Suter: 29:27 TOI per game
McDonagh: 23:27 TOI per game

Suter plays nearly half of every game. McDonagh is great and can become that kind of rock, but he isn't right now.

Keith is better than Seabrook and currently better than McDonagh.

Keith was the best d-men in both the 2010 and 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs. Outside of one season, he's been a top 5 d-men in the league for seasons now.

LOL. Keith is the reason people drool over Seabrook. Not surprising though.

I don't think that's really a fair comparison. Does he play less minutes because he can't handle more, or because the coach chooses to spread the ice time out more?

You actually really don't want your defensemen playing those kind of minutes, it's a sign that your team is poorly constructed, not that it's a good idea to play a guy half the game.

Trust me I think Keith is a tad overrated too, but Seabrook is by no means an anchor. I can think of at least 5 moments off the top of my head last playoffs where he made a bad read and the puck ended up in the Blackhawks net. Subtle enough for most to not notice them, but still bad mistakes.

Chicagos great defense is (IMO) a result of having four balanced lines that can possess the puck and play very well at both ends of the rink. They play very good team defense. Guys like Toews and Hossa are a huge part of that.

I don't like this argument, because McDonagh doesn't need to play almost half an hour a game.

Minus the top pair and Scandella, the Wild's defense is pretty bad.

If they had a better team, Suter wouldn't have to play so often.

I really disagree with this. Seabrook is prone to really stupid defensive lapses and his skating isn't up to par with Keith. Keith covers up for him a lot more than the other way around.

He's actually on pace for 49.

Still, though. He looks ****ing incredible out there. I think people underrate how good he actually is.

I said it last year that he is future Norris material. I'm looking forward to the day. Lets go MacTruck!

Girardi has been his partner since Staal got concussed in 2012, no?

Also, the Wild have absolutely no defensive depth outside of two studs in Suter and Brodin. So there's that.

McDonagh is definitely capable of playing in the high 20s for extended periods. We've seen him do it. The thing is that, despite the complaining about Staal, DZ and Moore's play, we have a very serviceable 3rd pair and an above average 2nd pair. Minnesota has a 1st pair, plus Keith Ballard who has been hurt, and a bunch of bottom pair D. If you traded McDonagh for Suter tomorrow, McDonagh would probably start getting 29 minutes of ice and Suter 24.

Literally the only d-man on the team + Stralman that I don't hate looking at lately.

What a year he's having.

Yes, you subscribe to the hype. Fine. He's OVERRATED

I've said it for two years that he is the best player on the team not named Lundqvist. And he might be better than Lundqvist this year
