For all the **** Sather rightfully earns, locking him up long-term last offseason was brilliant.

A defensve defenseman?

Huh?

Anyone who knew anything about him knew he was a 2 way defenseman.

He was a defensive guy in college after being expected to be more than that, His first year or so he also looked more like a defesive guy with some skills that weren't translating into points

his vision has gotten a lot better this year and his confidence in handling the puck and not turning it over is quite high.

I saw some Gopher fans compare the way Brady Skjei defends to Ryan Suter. The way he skates.

McDonagh was an offensive guy in high school. Is that because he was so much better than every other player or does he have offensive potential? Mike Eaves and John Tortorella used McD as a defend first guy of player. Under Alain Vigneault,he was shown that offensive potential. AV loves the word "potential".

Seriously, he forgot Lidstrom.

If Mac gets to 50 points he's better than keith (no question in my mind). Keith is one of the most overrated players in terms of his defensive abilities. Still has developing to do to get to ryan suter. But he appears to be on his way.

Rangers need to make decisions on Staal, Girardi and Del Zotto.

Do they see McIlrath replacing Girardi? Skjei replacing MDZ or Staal at some point?

McDonagh will anchor this defense for a decade. They need to build around him.

I just dont see Staal and Girardi lasting here at all.

With AV's system and active defense, despite a slow start for Staal I would keep him and let Girardi go.

And I LOVE Girardi.

I still don't want to give up on MDZ.

What does Suter do better? I'm honestly curious, this isn't a "no way McDonagh is at least as good as Suter!" I just don't watch Suter enough to be able to compare them a lot.

McDonagh is currently ahead of Suter in points this year, and we know he's one of the best defensive guys around too...Suter plays an absolute ton of minutes though (I think he's averaging like 29 minutes per game or something stupidly insane). Not sure how to compare their defensive games. Before this season I would have said Suter is more confident with the puck and makes things happen but I think McDonagh might have taken that step

The problem with Del Zotto is it's really tough to find room for him on his normal left side and it seems like management likes John Moore's upside better (probably because of his skating, they seem to freakin' love defensemen who skate really well)

MDZ's biggest flaw is his consistency issues, which I guess stems from a lack of mental focus/concentration/awareness??? I thought he was terrific the season before the lockout, the one where Staal missed a lot of time and MDZ played with both Stralman and Eminger quite a bit. That was a great season from him.... I have no idea why he has so much trouble replicating that level of play/effort/consistency....

He also seems to be a better stickhandler and have a better shot. I don't think MDZ at this point is much better defensively, so I side with management.

Can someone explain why OEL is unanimously viewed as the far superior player to McDonagh? Even before this season? This season OEL has started producing much better, but before this year he didn't produce that much offensively. +/- is a ****** stat, but the gap between the two for 2 mid-tier teams is enormous. Why is it unanimous that OEL is so much better?

Girardi is a warrior and hes bled a ton for this team, but his style of play does not fit AVs system, I agree. I regrettably would part ways with him (hopefully at the trade deadline?)

MDZ has played well in a top4 role in the past, I thought he's looked good in the past 2 games playing the left side again.

Staal has had a rocky start to this year, but we all know the kind of player he can be and the money he will earn next year. The question at this juncture is will it be worth paying Marc Staal 6+ mill a year to play 2nd pair minutes behind McDonagh? I think that unless we can get Marc to play the right side and slot in Girardi's position, it would not be a good investment of our cap to commit such a large amount to someone in a secondary role.We have 4 very capable LHD, and if we plan on keeping all 4 of them one of them will be going to waste unless one can play the right side well. If that is not viable, then we have to look into moving one of them.

Moore is still a very raw talent with great skating ability and a great shot, he has a lot of upside and can grow into a very talented player. But that's all he is right now, upside. He shows flashes of brilliance and can wow you with his skating, but the next shift he will make you scratch your head at some of the reads he makes. This isn't surprising, he is still young and learning the position.

MDZ is the same age as Moore, at 23, but has about 150 more games in the NHL than John. He has great vision and an awesome first pass and decent skating, but his shot leaves more to be desired. He too makes his share of dumb mistakes but some of this can be attributed to not playing in his natural position. His confidence is a very big determining factor in how he is playing. When he had to fill in the top 4 in the previous 2 seasons he has played exceptionally well, so we know he has the talent to play there, he just has to show it more consistently. His poor play recently hurts his trade value so if he is moved sometime this year we will not likely get a fair return for him.

Staal holds a lot of trade value and would probably be the wisest move asset management wise. He is the only expendable asset that could fetch us a bonafide top line forward, considering this team always has problems finding talent up front.

Well again he had his best seasons on his natural left side covering for Staal being out. Since Staal has come back, Del Zotto has had to play a lot of games on the right side and he just plain isn't as good at it.

That might not be all of it but I think it does play a significant role.

He's young and he is a really good defenseman and he got a lot of hype as being awesome so he's riding that momentum. Again, I dont' really watch enough west coast games to do a real comparison between OEL and McDonagh, but I think those things do play a big role in the perception of OEL. He's following the progression that people expected of him as a hyped prospect.

McDonagh wasn't as hyped, and despite our excitement over him when he broke into the league, he was still pigeon-holed as a stay at home defender who skates well. He has "more to prove" in other peoples eyes I think.

Because on HFboards he gets the "he plays in a small market and nobody gets to see him, so that automatically makes him better" reputation.

OEL is awesome though.

The way Phoenix is playing now, they are not mid tier. Notch below the top. OEL was hyped at the draft time and people see immense ability. Mcdonagh is just as good, if not better already. Before this season, it is the fact really good players on a poor team stand out that much more. Everyone else looks like a scrub next to them of course they look amazing.

Also Mac is finally getting PP time.

I meant over their careers they were both on mid tier teams on average.

Quickly turing into one of my favorite Rangers, he's made some unbeliveable defensive plays the last few games.

I could see Staal being moved. I am fine with Danny G, Stralman and McI on the right side. As for Skjei, love what I see from him. but too early to pencil him in.
