I'm not convinced it was just injury.

There was a lot of blind passes when he was hurt too, and lots of bad decisions. He clearly has mobility back, but there is less pressure now as well. Drai is suddenly hitting the net as well, and the entire team is playing well.

Mcdrai probably wants to win a cup here more than all of us combined. They realistically have two years to get it done before it gets messy, which is pretty heavy, and outside pressure was favoriting us. At this point, if they don't win a cup here, our legacy of poo will become part of their legacy. Or, if they win, they will be immortalized by the city

There are injuries for sure, but it also looks like the expectations got to the team. Coffey isn't some mythical Darnell Nurse whisperer, the team was given a mental reset that freed them from preseason expectations imo

This season: 3.37 shots/game, 12.0% shooting %, 21 goals (52 games)
Last season: 4.29 shots/game, 18.2% shooting %, 64 goals
2 Seasons ago: 3.93 shots/game, 14.0% shooting %, 44 goals (80 games)

This is his lowest shots/game season since the covid shortened season when he was returning from that major knee injury. He went for 3.31 shots/game in that season and still scored 34 goals in 64 games.

His 12% shooting % is tied for the worst in his career and going all the way back to his sophomore season.

He is looking off his shot far too much this season and IMO likely has an injury that is impacting his shot. Hopefully this changes because come playoff time we need Connor to be at his absolute best and be the game breaker that we know that he is.

On pace to be only the 4th player in NHL history to score 100+ assists in a season and would be the first to do it since 90-91 when Gretzky did it last.

McDAVID HITS 70 ASSISTS, 90 POINTS AS OILERS FEND OFF KINGS
Connor McDavid
(0-2—2) hit both the 70-assist and 90-point marks as the Oilers (34-20-2, 70 points) fended off the Kings (29-18-10, 68 points) to maintain hold of third place in the Pacific Division. Edmonton battled back from two separate one-goal deficits to earn its 18th comeback win – only the Devils (19), Stars (18), Red Wings (18) and Rangers (18) have as many this season.

* McDavid (21-70—91 in 54 GP) hit the 70-assist plateau for the fourth straight season and became the sixth player in NHL history to post a run of that length after Wayne Gretzky (13 from 1979-90–1992-93), Bobby Orr (6 from 1969-70–1974-75), Adam Oates (5 from 1989-90–1993-94), Peter Stastny (4 from 1980-81–1983-84) and Guy Lafleur (4 from 1976-77–1979-80).

* The Oilers captain also became the fastest player to record 70 assists in a campaign since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96 (50 GP). Only three different players in NHL history have recorded 70 helpers faster than McDavid: Gretzky (10x; fastest: 36 GP in 1985-86), Lemieux (3x; fastest: 43 GP in 1988-89) and Oates (45 GP in 1990-91).

* Twenty of McDavid’s 70 assists have come in his past eight appearances dating to Feb. 13, making him just the fifth different player in NHL history to post 20-plus helpers over an eight-game span. The others: Gretzky (20x; most: 26 from Dec. 7-20, 1985), Oates (3x; most: 23 from Jan. 22–Feb. 6, 1991), Lemieux (3x; most: 22 from Dec. 5-21, 1992) and Orr (20 from Feb. 28–March 13, 1971).

Hoping that he hits 100 assists, but if he doesn't score at least 40 goals that is a letdown based on his talent. Still think that he doesn't have the same zip on his shot due to injury which is forcing him to pass more since he doesn't have confidence in beating goalies clean at the moment. This is where pro scouting is huge especially for playoff match-ups.

He would need 19 goals in 26 games to hit 40.

Was at the game last night, and I have to admit, when I saw him 10 feet in front of No Save Dave and no one in between them, I gasped a bit when he passed off to Hyman in the corner. Fortunate, it was a great shot from Zach, but if he misses, I can just imagine the teeth grinding. Here's a guy that just went 4 for 4 from nearly the exact same distance in the all Star skills and he's passing it off to someone at the side. Mind you, Rittich probably expected McDavid to shoot and was caught in no mans land when it went over to Hyman for a wide open net.

He would need 19 goals in 26 games to hit 40.
With McDavid firing at his best, that is easily doable.

Is he not looking to score or is he just incredibly unlucky right now?

He's hit 7 posts/crossbars since the all-star break in 11 games.
His shot numbers are down and IMO he doesn't appear to have the same zip on his shot that he did last year.

If the shooting% remains the same and he plays the next 30 games then he is on pace for 33 goals.
That would be his lowest goal total since 2020/21 a season where he had 33 goals as well.
Only in his rookie season did he have fewer goals (32).

He's clearly saving it for the playoffs.

Yes. It’s clear thats what he’s doing.

That's why so many are wondering what is the actual situation.

I'd say it's a combination of a few things. He's looking off really good chances, not shooting with the same authority as last year when he does shoot, and yes, there has been some bad luck.

IMO the success of this season, for the team and on a personal level for McDavid, will be measured in the postseason. I honestly have very little interest in the scoring race etc, sure you rather our guy win if you can choose but little interest in those personal milestones at this stage anymore.

That first time a player has had 25 assists in a calendar month in 30 years is pretty insane when you consider the Oilers had almost the whole first week of the month off.
