OFFENSIVE OUTBURSTS GUIDE OILERS AND KINGS TO HIGH-SCORING WINS
Connor McDavid
(1-1—2), Leon Draisaitl (0-3—3), Phillip Danault (3-0—3) and Kevin Fiala (1-2—3) led the way in offensive outbursts for a pair of Pacific Division clubs as the second-seeded Oilers (37-20-2, 76 points) and Kings (31-19-10, 72 points) captured pivotal victories in the Western Conference playoff race.

* McDavid, who extended his home point streak to 25 games in the process, and Draisaitl combined on two of six Oilers goals and have done so 416 times in the regular season – the second highest among two active teammates behind Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom (502). The only others to do so at least 300 times: Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin (365) as well as Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen (326).

* McDavid joined Nathan MacKinnon – who owns an active 29-game stretch – as the second player with a streak of at least 25 games this season. The 2023-24 campaign is just the fourth in NHL history to feature multiple players achieve the feat following 1989-90 (Brett Hull & Mario Lemieux, both w/ 26 GP), 1981-82 (Bryan Trottier: 31 GP & Wayne Gretzky: 25 GP) and 1979-80 (Gretzky: 28 GP & Guy Lafleur: 27 GP).

If McDavid hits 100 assists he will be the third player in NHL history to get 100 in a season. The other two are Gretzky and Orr. Maybe that's why he's passing so much. To improve his legacy.

If he is not injured, he is 10000% doing this on purpose lol

He's the type that can. Always improves something. They asked if he can score 50 and he smokes it after working on his shot

He still defers too much but you can tell he's trying to get those assists. Hope he does it.

He needs another monster game or two against a bottom feeder

Lemieux also had a 100 assist season in 88-89, but still pretty good company

McDAVID CLOSES IN ON SEVENTH 100-POINT SEASON DURING NINE-GAME TUESDAY
A nine-game Tuesday will see a faceoff between the Bruins and Oilers at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sportsnet and TVA Sports as Connor McDavid (23-74—97 in 57 GP) looks to hit the 100-point mark for the seventh time in his career, while the Blues visit the Islanders on ESPN+ and Hulu. McDavid has recorded a three-point game 117 times since he made his NHL debut in 2015-16 – by far the most among all players over that span.
McDavid100Media_March5-05125110.png

* McDavid, who trailed the leader of the Art Ross Trophy Race by as much as 22 points on Jan. 24, has narrowed that gap to eight thanks to his League-leading 6-31—37 (17 GP) over that span – 10 more points than the next-closest skater. The Oilers captain can become just the fourth player to win the Art Ross Trophy after trailing by a gap of 22 or more points following Peter Forsberg (32 points in 2002-03), Mario Lemieux (23 points in 1987-88) and Bobby Hull (22 points in 1961-62).

* McDavid has posted seven of his 11 three-point outings this season since the calendar flipped to 2024 and can record his fourth consecutive 100-point season with another three-point performance against the Bruins. He would become the first player to post four straight 100-point campaigns in more than 30 years after Steve Yzerman and Brett Hull had their six- and four-year runs conclude in 1992-93.

McDAVID FACTORS ON LATE GAME-TYING AND OVERTIME GOAL IN COMEBACK WIN
Connor McDavid
(0-2—2) factored on both of Leon Draisaitl’s goals, which tied the game with 1:20 remaining in regulation and won the contest in overtime, as the Oilers (38-20-2, 78 points) created a five-point gap over the the Kings (31-19-11, 73 points) for second place in the Pacific Division. Tuesday also marked Edmonton’s 20th comeback win of the season, which is tied with New Jersey for the most among all clubs.

* McDavid (23-76—99 in 58 GP) moved within one point of his his fourth consecutive 100-point season and the seventh of his career. He also closed the gap to just six points behind the NHL leading scorers, Nathan MacKinnon (39-66—105 in 63 GP) and Nikita Kucherov (38-67—105 in 62 GP) – both have played five and four more games than McDavid, respectively.

* McDavid extended his assist streak to a career-high 12 games and is now on pace for 104 assists. Only three players have had 100-plus helpers in a season: Wayne Gretzky (11x), Mario Lemieux and Bobby Orr. This note and more are featured in the #NHLStats 2023-24 Final Quarter document which can be found here.
McDavidAssistStreakMarch5_Media-06124829.png

* Draisaitl scored his 60th career game-winning goal and tied Jari Kurri for the fourth most in Oilers history. He also recorded his 57th game-tying tally, which is tied with Steven Stamkos for the fourth most among all players since he entered the League in 2014-15, behind Alex Ovechkin (74), Jeff Skinner (63) and Connor McDavid (61).

MCDAVID RECORDS SEVENTH CAREER 100-POINT SEASON
Connor McDavid
(23-77—100 in 59 GP) collected an assist to reach the 100-point mark for the seventh time in his career, tied for the fourth most in NHL history with Mike Bossy and Peter Stastny. The only players with more: Wayne Gretzky (15), Mario Lemieux (10) and Marcel Dionne (8).

* McDavid, whose Oilers contested the NHL’s 995th game of 2023-24, joined Nathan MacKinnon (40-69—109 in 64 GP) and Nikita Kucherov (38-68—106 in 63 GP) as the third player with 100 points. Over the past 30 years, only two other seasons have featured three or more players with 100 points through the first 1,000 games: 1993-94 (6) and 1995-96 (11).

* McDavid’s seventh 100-point season allowed him to become the third player in NHL history with as many before age 28, joining Gretzky (10) and Lemieux (8).

* On a franchise level, McDavid’s seventh 100-point season trails only Gretzky (9) for the most, while his four consecutive 100-point campaigns is the third longest run in franchise history behind Gretzky (9 from 1979-80 – 1987-88) and Jari Kurri (5 from 1982-83 – 1986-87).

Well IMO this season likely will be the first season that McDavid isn't winning the Art Ross since the '19-20 season when he returned from his knee injury. I don't think that it's a secret that players like McDavid are driven in terms of the legacy that they leave behind when it's all said and done and trying to be the best that they possibly can be. I also don't believe that he has been at 100% basically for the whole season. Watching others taking home all of the hardware would be hard for him unless we win it all this season. Here's where the scoring race sits entering tonight's games:

Nikita Kucherov 67gp. (14 Games Remaining, Tampa has played 68gp.) 41-77-118 1.76ppg.
Nathan MacKinnon 69gp. (13 Games Remaining) 42-75-117 1.70ppg.
Connor McDavid 64gp. (16 Games Remaining, Edm. has played 66gp.) 26-82-108 1.69ppg.

Projected Points at Season's End Based on Their Current Pace:
Kucherov 143 points
MacKinnon 139 points
McDavid 135 points

To beat Kucherov's current pace, McDavid would need 36 points in his last 16 games or a 2.25 points/game average. If he was at the top of his game and healthy I would see that as very doable. I don't think it happens unless our PP gets white hot and we actually start getting PP chances. Hopefully I am wrong.

Mcdavid hasn't looked good this year but he's still on pace for 135 points. It's like he's been a step slower, his stickhandling and shooting are slightly off but is still skilled enough to be right there at the top of the scoring race.

This season is like a glimpse into what Mcdavid will be like when he starts to decline in his early 30's.

38 points in 15 games to reach 1000 points would be Lemieux level greatness to finish the season.
If anyone can do it it’s Connor. I can’t expect it because it’s a lofty goal, but I wouldn’t bet against McJesus either.

It would be truly astonishing especially considering the dismal start to the season

He's too predictable passing to Drai and looking off his own shot. Yet he still racks up the points. Here's to hoping that he's 100% next season and hits another gear. Hopefully in the upcoming playoffs too, but I'm not sure he's going to be able to overcome whatever is ailing him to do that.
