I find it interesting that he grew up in the Curtis Joseph orbit in the King City area and have all those connections playing with his son.

Curtis Joseph also left Edmonton as a free agent to come to Toronto so you'll know that detail will annoy the heck out of Oilers fans.

People become attached to players unfortunately. I mean these guys have their own lives to worry about. I don't think any basketball fans in Toronto harbor any ill will to Kawhi. He did what he came here to do, what more do you want from the guy ?

Having center depth be McDavid-Matthews-Tavares-ROR is pretty good, I guess.

So you're saying he's gonna be a Leaf .... wooooo hoooo .. dynasty here we come .... If you think about it JT is making 11mil, Kerfoot is making 3.5 mil, Holl is making 2 mil , we drop thoes 3 guys and sign McDavid to a 16.5 mil per year, this GMing stuff is easy!

He will look good on our 1st line
McDavid will be 29 when a UFA.

Unfortunately we will only have $3 million in salary space to sign him, and he will have to accept a 2nd line role behind Bedard, Matthews, and J. Robertson
Completely unrelated, but while I do present the idea that the Tavares signing was one of the worst signings in the history of the franchise (team was not ready, advanced the idea behind competing early than needed, could have used cap space for defensive depth/high level winger to complement the team top 3 and could have easily ran with Kadri as 2C etc) it unironically may be a blessing because it showed that players can theoretically go back to their home towns with not as much back lash as people were expecting minus the fan base of the team they are leaving. It is just doing a disservice intellectually to think he was not sad about going to the Oilers on the draft night; sorry, the eyes do not lie. I don't think it's an absolute guarantee that he signs here. Hell, I would still bet against it. But there is definitely a chance it happens.

Absolutely need to see the long play. Not in recent memory had we seen hometown players willing to come home.
Spezza and GIO along with JT have set the bar for returning home.

I am already pencilling in O'Reilly, Connor Brown this coming year and Brodie the following year @ hometown discount rates.

If O'Reilly and co. give a decent hometown discount with JT coming off the books (or on a very cheap retirement contract) and Matthews/Marner don't completely rinse the Leafs, I can definitely see it happening. McDavid at like 13-14 potentially?

ROR has always been a mercenary so it would be surprising if he didn’t try to get every dollar, either here or somewhere else.

If McDavid wanted to be a Leaf, he should never have signed his current contract at 8 years.

I wanted a McDavid in his prime, not a McDavid winding down his career to retire here as a Leaf.

Spezza was great at his cap hit, however he was hardly the Spezza from 15 years ago.

McDavid made his Edmonton bed, now he should have to lie in it!!!

Christ if he up and bolted to come here I think that would nuke the Edmonton fan base for real. Like...no hope, nothing...done. They ain't gonna recover from that one. But I gotta think that would be a fairly depressing career to spend your entirety of it in such a small ass backwater market.

Technically Gretzky wanted to play here and we said no.

"Gretzky, who grew up in Brantford, Ont., explained that he and his agent at the time, Mike Barnett, “were leaning to go to Toronto and be part of the Toronto Maple Leafs,” but it turns out the team was more interested in a new arena rather than signing The Great One."

Now to be fair, Gretzky was well past his prime at the time and would have had a hard time fitting into our line up which was stacked with Sundin as 1C. It would have been more for the luls and jersey sales. But we already have a 99.

The pandemic was the reason for the Leafs downfall, not the Tavares contract.

the cap froze by what, 10M+? That would have accounted to re-signing Hyman and adding another top 4 defender from free agency.
Thought it was the on ice officials.

We could have had Sundin, Gilmour and Gretzky down the middle.

If he doesn’t extend with the Oilers when he can. He is coming to the Leafs. Might even ask for a trade to avoid all the distractions in the last year.
Like what Tkachuk did with the Flames.

I feel like Vancouver has the legitimate little brother complex

Is there a such thing as a third cousin complex for Edmonton? lol
And Ottawa has the pet dog that can't be housebroken complex?

McDavid at 29 years old, is still going to be insanely talented and still killing it in the NHL. I can only hope that he comes home after his current contract is up, but I feel pretty confident that he will be a Leaf at some point in his career.

If you read between the lines, he'll be signing here once his contract is up.

Buh Bye Oilers....

Has a player of his calibre ever bailed on his team ? Him signing here would be a dream but I don't think a FA signing of that level has ever happened in the NHL
