Sounds like how someone would argue toews over Crosby in 2015. Intangibles!
Anybody who knows anything about hockey knows what crosby brought those playoffs. McDavid can score as much as he wants. Until he stops playing like a winger and actually cares about other things besides just scoring he will not win

I’m not saying he didn’t play well. But he relied on others offensively. He did not single handedly win that cup

No player single handedly wins a Cup. But there are players that buckle down and do what it takes to greatly help lead to that. McDavid is all about offence. Sacrificing some points to play an all around game is what's needed

I agree that he will have to player a better two way game but that’s because his team is awful. Do you think mcdavid has the luxury of finishing 6th overall in playoff scoring and winning a cup? (Nvm the Smythe) His team just isn’t good enough. It will be a testament to his greatness I agree. But the playing field isn’t equal for every player here

Part of that is being the captain and changing the narrative of the team by his on ice play. Don't ask players to come to camp early. Evolve your game. Tweak it. He's 27 its time to stop playing like a 21 year old blitz kid fresh out of the chl. Yzerman molded his game. Sakic would die out there for a win etc

not trying to be a gotcha or anything but for consistency sake did you give merit to the Toews vs Crosby discussions almost a decade ago? I’m not asking if you would’ve picked Toews but did you see a legitimate argument? I didn’t. I’m just curious with seeing how much you value certain aspects of the game

I don't know, this seems like a myth based on his first few seasons in the league when he indeed was not very good defensively. Since then he has improved greatly and actually also molded his game. Also, the best defense is possessing the puck and McDavid had over 72 corsi-% last year. That's an absolutely insane number.

Below is a fairly good breakdown of McDavid's defensive game. Like I said it has improved greatly over the course of his career. It's a year old analysis and so far his best defensive season number-wise was 2021-2022 which probably skews it a bit. But for everything else he brings to the table his defensive game is definitely good enough to win a cup. It's the rest of the team that's been the problem, not McDavid.

As time goes on it becomes more clear that mcdavid is missing something that the true all time greats had. He is not cut from the same cloth

Say what you want about his playoff numbers. I see straight through them like fish tanks wit no fish in them
All he needs is his management to make the moves to balance out the roster better. Sell a forward to fix defense and goaltending. They would be a better team. McDrai brings so much offense; they should be fine if they don't leak goals to their own end.

He would be a fantastic complimentary superstar. If he could be the Draisaitle to the Mcdavid in the Mcdavid/Draisaitle relationship then they may have a better dynamic.

Like Lemieux/Jagr almost. Number 2 guy may be the better player but number 1 sets and defines the level of play and atmosphere so the true talent has a chance to come out.

I'd love to see a Stützle/Mcdavid 1-2 punch on the Sens one day.

Yeah, it's called "great teammates".

One of the (many) ways I know I am "old" is to go from dissecting the annoyances of Crosby in real time to feeling the urge to defend him from mind-numbingly ignorant takes of those who either never truly watched him play or just flat-out poop out of their mouths. Crosby is a Top-10 all-time talent. And, while Crosby was a b***h he was never a flat-out p***y as McDavid is.

This take on HF boards has to be one of the worst lol. You can always tell whos watching the game.

Anyone else think this was a mistake? Maybe rubbed some players the wrong way? Oilers playing apathetic hockey right now...
SAD that you searched for this thread just to stir the pot LMAO

Did you watch crosby that run. He did everything that was needed. Faceoffs. Back checking leadership etc. He played exactly how you want your best player and captain to play. Gtfo with that nonsense.
Yeah true. If Mcdavid would have played like Crosby and went below a ppg instead of nearly 2ppg for two straight playoffs the Oilers would have been better off. You dont need goals to win hockey games only intangibles.
