Mcdavid 5min Match Penalty: Cross check to the face of Garland (Will have a hearing tomorrow afternoon, 1/20)

Judging by the video it was Garland who fell victim to that.

It's not uncommon for both players to hit the ice when contact/hits are initiated. Garland held him down yes, but you have to understand how they got into that situation.

This was not two guys going down purely because of collision and ballance. This is the result of collision and clutching. Whatever....we each have our perspective.

Which is fair. Ultimately we agree that the refs botched the entire situation by letting it go on for so long. The refs had ample time and opportunity to call a penalty and stoppage in play but they did not.

Raise the hand for the interference on Garland, stop play when McDavid punches Garland in the back of the head. Both serve 2 minute penalties and the game goes on.

Refs dont call McDavids high stick on Hronek

Refs call play dead when Arvidsson takes a puck to the shin and breaks a leg. He comes back on the ice 30 seconds later healed.

Refs dont call Bouchard interfering with Petey.

Refs dont call McDavids interference with Garland.

Refs dont call a penalty on Garland interfering back with McDavid.

McDavid pulls 2nd classless Marchands in just as many games.

Oilers fans: refs hate us and ruined the game
The stick was up on Hronek, but hit him in the upper chest (vid here). Not high sticking.

Arvidsson was actually questionable to play due to a shot block in the previous game. This one hit him in the same spot. I can't totally remember, but I believe that the refs waited until the zone was cleared to whistle it down. Apologies if I got that part wrong.

Someone needs to post video of the Bouchard/Pettersson play. I saw them tie up, but need another look to see what happened.

McDavid's interference? Are you talking about when he went at Garland with the puck at the end? He's allowed to drive through as the puck carrier. Garland actually made a great defensive play and knocked the puck loose just as he was about to make contact. Not interference (and sorry if you were referring to another play.)

Garland wasn't interfering back. He was just interfering.

I'm not a "Refs hate us" proponent, but they didn't do a very good job in this game, and I'm sure both teams have valid complaints. Just not the ones you you posted.

So every player gets played exactly the same. No team plays star players any harder and McDavid is the only one who can’t handle it?

Players react when it happens this way. Garland POS held on to him like there was no tomorrow. Dying second of the game. McDavid wanted to win and Garland was acting like the POS that he is to keep McDavid out of the play. I would suggest posters swing by twitter and Instagram accounts from people who actually played in the NHL to get their view of the play. AS one posted. It will separate those who have played and those who scream shoot at the TV apart

The justification for McDavid to crosscheck Garland because he was being held is laughable.

A lot of Oil fans were crying bloody murder over the Soucy incident last year, but yet this play tonight is a nothing burger apparently. Hypocrisy much?

As a Canuck fan I agree with what he did. I thought I hate the Oilers at the same level as everyone else. But many people here took it the next level after what happened in this thread. Garland did his best Marchand impersonation Saturday night.

One more person needs to be suspended...Wes McCauley.
What a friggin' half wit.
Pull your whistle out of your ass before things escalate!
Then after all is said and done..."2 five minute majors and everyone else gets a minor penalty"?
Oh my...your so in control.
How flippin' lazy are you?
Do your job dumbass!!
He is legit a dogshit ref that some people have decided is good because he has a personality and makes goofy calls from time to time.

Based on Garlands own words, he held him for the sole purpose of taking him out of play but don’t let that stop you from inflating your post count uselessly.

Yes, I agree, I´m just having some problem understanding what the poster I answered means when it comes to defensive assignments/ interaction regarding star players compared to average players. What the poster said:
  • Star players gets more attention harder marking from opposition players compared to average players. Let’s call it defensive interaction.
  • Star players and average players gets interfered with, slashed, hooked and so on, EXACTLY the same. Let’s call it defensive violation.
If we just make a few assumptions:
  • Let´s say an average player endures 10 defensive interactions/10 minutes by defending team and a star player perhaps endures 15 defensive interactions/10 minutes by defending team.
  • We assume both star players and average players endures 1 defensive violation/10minutes.
If we combine them (all according to the poster logic):
  • A star player endures 1 defensive violation/ 15 defensive interactions.
  • An average player endures 1 defensive violation/ 10 defensive interactions.
We can probably agree that star players of any sport probably are quicker, smarter, more slippery and so on compared to average players. If we add that the poster said that McDavid couldn’t handle this, it all adds up to something like this:

Opposition players plays a lot better, cleaner and more disciplined against the smarter, quicker and more slippery players compared to the average players. McDavid cannot handle this clean defensive game. Almost everyone besides other players who´s gotten suspended for this kind of retaliation can take it. Again, the poster could be correct, I myself doubt it though.

BTW McDavid shouldn´t do that, a couple of games is deserved.

It is when McDavid faces the same or worse abuse on a nightly basis without so much as a call, and Myers hasn't had a hearing announced yet.

If he's that much of a goon then he shouldn't represent Canada. Let's see how Bettman feels about his caveman in chief's decisions then.

Cross-checking someone in the head is actually pretty bad, and McDavid does not have something as bad or worse happen to him nightly. Even if he did, doing it to someone else for a much less dangerous transgression isn't acceptable.

Still don't see what McDavid did wrong. Garland had it coming. And the refs should have called a penalty. Can't fault McDavid for being forced to make a strong hockey play.

So any suspendable action is OK if the refs fail to make a call? Sounds like a recipe for anarchy.

Refs are supposed to be there to call things before it gets too heated. They failed to do so. This is on them. Can't fault McDavid for being angry that this hobbit is attached to him when his team is trying to win with 30 seconds left.

2 games for both Myers and McDavid would be the consistent call. Anything less shows favoritism and if it's 5 games like Morgan Reilly got it will demonstrate the league hates Edmonton and Vancouver like they hate the Leafs. We should know by the end of business day today
