I would've liked to see something between 5-10 games each but this is still good.

McDavid especially needs to control himself. He's the best player in the world and young kids look up to him, he's not just a hockey player he's a role model - probably the most important one right now - who needs to set a good example for the youth to follow. With great power comes great responsibility, sorry, I know it's hard, but he needs to be held to a higher standard.

P.S. I love how passionate these two teams get when they face each other, what a great rivalry. Emotional hockey is the best to watch.
Sure, Whats the thought on refs who do not do their jobs

Over simplifying the situation there. POS Garland was interfering with him by acting like a child hugging a teddy bear. He even said he did it intentionally to keep him out of the play for the seconds of the game. It was a cheap move and it showed the NHL ref being a joke for not giving either a roughing call or interference call to Garland. It was cheap play
Sounds exactly like I wrote. Garland (a shit disturber for sure) got under McDavid’s skin. Cross checking him to the head was crossing the line. He should have dropped the mitts and fought Garland. Selfish by McDavid. He put his personal, in the moment, satisfaction ahead of the team.

Yeah, cause breaking his hands on his helmet and being out for the season would be much better. That also doesn’t excuse the cross check by the way. But honestly, one of the leagues best players ranks as one of the lowest for drawing penalties. He plays a lot, has the puck a lot and players get away with a lot against him. He boiled over because the nhl doesn’t do its job. Only league that behaves this way and then everyone’s shocked that he does something about kt.

Why the f*** do Canuck fans owe you any explanation as to how the League calls the games?

you guys are doing a lot of talking about what happened but not WHY it happened. After watchin the entire replay several times. You guys should not gloating or riding a high horse..

If say Miller or Petterson did that to Hyman you guys would be saying that he got was deserved for being such a cheap, lazy player. And Garland's post game interview? Does not do him any favours.

here’s how I see it, McDavid is the generational player right now and he does things at speed that no one else can. What does that come with? Players trying to stop him anyway they can. But the Refs can’t call everything on him because that would be “unfair” so they let a ton of garbage go. He’s 197th in drawn penalties per 60. It’s crap, a penalty is a penalty. They’ve over compensated and it’s not that they don’t call it because he embellishes.

(We asked four sources within the department if that is the case with McDavid. All said it was not.
“The embellishment list? Never, ever,” said a source. “Never even brought up with McDavid. He plays through it, the way (Sidney) Crosby does.” )

So what happens when the refs don’t call shit and your the superstar but aren’t being allowed to lay the game fairly because of slashes, holds, hooks, trips, all the extra shit? Frustration, what else? It’s not like you can have a conversation with the refs and get them to make calls. So McDavid reacts and pulls the same shit. Now there’s a highlight of a superstar losing his cool and that gets blasted everywhere. Not all the highlights before though…. So now McDavids just a dirty player.

McDavid deserved to be suspended for this, there’s no room for sticks to the face. But let’s not kid ourselves… this is an officiating issue. There’s no way Garland should have been able to hold McDavid on the ice, then tackle/hold him again without an arm going up. Call penalties. If a player is so good he’s getting all the chops, grabs etc.. good call it. There is no favouritism…Be the change. Everyone knows officiating an issue, and it’s so wild reading this thread and the amount of people whining about McDavid. Like all you people haven’t complained about reffing. Reffing is atrocious, there’s no standard for when they do or when they don’t call something a penalty, goalie interference etc.

Again McDavid should be suspended, I think the amount is fair but let’s not ignore the true issue here. Reffing.

Sure thing……a hold/ interference deserves a blindside cross check to the head…..good math……both MacDavid and Myers deserved what they got …..deal with it

The league values parity over everything, if they called every infraction on star players like McDavid, especially for a team like the Oilers who have a potent PP, they’d have a lot more games with wide margins. Teams knows this so they employ obstructionist defending against elites knowing that maybe 1 out of 6 gets called, which is a fine trade off given the amount of scoring chances you’re possibly preventing.

Unfortunate that McDavid has to send his own message. Next time just make sure you get him clean in the mouth. You can bet a few hours in the dentist chair would have Garland apprehensive about that type of defending in the future.

back in the day? For being such a cheap player? He would get his ass kicked. His actions caused what happen to happen

Last fight McD had was in juniors. Worked the guy over pretty good and broke his hand - out for many games. What good is he if he gets hurt. You have all said it and most Oiler fans know it. Team is not a cup contender without him. We need a Wilson type player (wish Foligno from Chicago was available).

i think what a lot of people are missing is the fact mcdavid only did this because it was garland, a guy 6 inches shorter and at least 30 pounds lighter than mcdavid. and prior to that it was johansson, with just 140 pm and no fights in 950 games played. johansson has received lady byng votes 6 times in his career and mcdavid has more hits than he does this year.

mcdavid is a calculating guy. not a chance is mcdavid cheap shotting anyone who could turn around and fight him. he's passing on what he perceives to be the abuse he receives to guys he perceives he can get away with going after without consequences.

now the players he is going after are usually considered off limits for cheap shots and protected by teammates if someone does. but not a chance is mcdavid answering the bell if another canuck or wild player challenges him for cheap shotting their teammate, and the whole oilers team would have to intervene if someone tried

so the moral of this story is i don't think dops is going to let mcdavid go around cheap shotting guys with impunity.

I’m sure it’s already been said 1000 times in this thread, but it’s mind boggling that the NHL would create/support a situation (ie: horrible officiating) that led to this level of frustration for one of the biggest stars in the game to act out.

Yes McDavid is responsible for his actions and yes he deserves to be suspended for those actions, but if the refs call the game the way it should be called, nothing escalates to what we saw. But no, the league is all about parity, at any cost. Why try to sell 1000 McDavid jerseys when you can sell 10 Radko Gudas jerseys, and all it takes is swallowing a whistle.

Someone breathes on Patrick Mahomes and it’s a 15 yard penalty. Someone looks at LeBron and it’s a trip to the foul line. Someone has non consensual relations with McDavid as he’s pinned to the ground and it’s considered a “hockey play.”

I’m not saying I like the over-protection Mahomes or LeBron get in their respective sports, finding some middle ground between that and the NHL’s approach to protecting their stars is ideal, but I bring it up for the simple fact those sports leave the NHL in the dust when it comes to popularity. They know how to showcase their stars. The ironic thing is the NHL will have promos that show McDavid/Matthews/Kucherov/MacKinnon doing amazing things, then will do everything in their power to make those things near impossible to achieve.

Couldn’t agree more. The game is best when reffed at a high standard with the more modern game in mind. We’re all clearly the more die-hard of fans, we get the rough stuff and frustration- it doesn’t make for the best stories or viewship. It’s up to the league to save players from themselves on the dumb shit, and they don’t do it. Fiasco.

This statistic seems to include players who have played less than 10 games, and Matt Rempe is 5th by this metric.

If you look at raw totals, McDavid is 43rd, Garnet Hathaway is 1st, Brady Tkachuk is 3rd, Mathieu Olivier is 4th, Matthew Tkachuk is 8th, and Tom Wilson is 11th. It's not a good metric.
