The only real glimmer of hope for the current situation is that Darcy was extended for a job-above-averagely done since Pegula came to town, knowing full well that if Ruff didn't succeed this year, he'd be gone.

We can argue about the bar of success for a team in a transition (playoff berth, winning around, not playing like a gong show...), but the fact that Darcy got another contract without Ruff getting the same gives me some small hope that DR is ready to move on, if appropriate.

The defense is garbage, so they're not buying in. It's almost like Vanek is producing just to spite him. There hardly seems to be any interaction between Ruff and the players during the game. A fresh guy in the room might get the team believing in itself again, and make them at least half-watchable.

Date to circle: Friday. If Boston gets revenge and embarrasses us on home ice Friday, Ruff will be gone by the end of the season.

Why the end of the season? If Friday is such a statement game, then why not by the end of the weekend?

I'll say it again: Regier has put the team in the position we all wanted them to be in. Pipeline filled with Dmen (none of whom are tough, though, I know)...Offensive forwards with goalscoring talent (Armia, Grigs, Cat)...Centers (Grigs, Girgensons)... tougher guys to play against (Ott, Foligno).... a top line in VHP.

Now we need a coach to put it all together. It's quite obvious who's to blame at this point. Regier's poor transactions/rosters of the past have been well documented, but I think he has done exactly what I wanted our GM to do in terms of setting this team up to succeed down the road in 2,3, 4 years.

Gimme a coach who will ride the top line, especially Vanek, and play him 20+ mins/gm. Give me the coach who knows how to motivate his players with a combination of coddling and tough love. The coach who knows which of his guys need to be on the ice in whatever the situation calls for.

I agree 100%

I grew tired of Ruff last year, but I wasn't sure if it was injuries or coaching. Now it's painfully obvious. I despise the way this team plays. Myers-Leo is a prime example of why he is a bad coach for this team.

Best case scenario that could lead to a Ruff firing : We continue our losing streak and Lindy starts calling out a bunch of players in the media to take blame away from him, this will hopefully lead to the players speaking out more about Lindy as a coach and maybe even going behind his back to upper management.

Uhhhh, Regier definitely had something to do with it. After Briere went to arbitration and was awarded a 1 year, 5 million deal... he offered to re-sign during that season for another 5 years, 25 Million. Maybe the organization felt slighted that Danny would go the arbitraitor route, but Darcy should have been able to make the case @ 5 mil per season... Briere was a good deal.

Briere was happy in Buffalo and was willing to sign for a discount (over what he got in Philly). For that reason alone, Regier should have been fired - even if it was his failure to get management to understand what was in the best interest of the franchise.

I'd bet Darcy saw it the same way. Doesn't mean Quinn/Golisano did.

Wow, I guess mediocricy is not accepted in certain cities

and that's not even counting Cup winning coaches who won the cup prior to a new job/firing.

This is just the last 13 head coaches to win a cup.... 7 of them have been fired by the team they won the cup with.

Out of those 7, how many have won the cup during Ruff's tenure AND have been fired?

And list the coaches, thanks

all of them

Ken Hitchcock - Dallas
Bob Hartley - New Jersey
Pat Burns - New Jersey
Larry Robinson - Colorado
John Tortorella - Tampa
Peter Laviolette - Carolina
Randy Carlyle - Anaheim

Here are my reasons why people support Ruff, even though I don't. Feel free to post more. Trying to think outside the box on this Wednesday morning.

1) They don't want to see him succeed somewhere else.
2) They're afraid of change.
3) They don't believe there is a suitable replacement available.

4.) He went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1999, with a rag tag team and a generational goaltender. They were huge underdogs. AND THEY GOT SCREWED ON NO GOAL

No Goal to me is the #1 reason why Lindy is viewed as a good coach

The task ahead:

Over the last 6 years, it took an average of 92 points to make the playoffs. On a 48 game schedule, that number is 54 pts. Buffalo has 7 so they need to win 24 out of 38 games(a 104 season pace) just to possible sneak in.

I cannot see this team under Ruff doing this.

I still believe Ruff won't be coach after this season.
Maybe he get's canned before, but next season the Sabres will have a new coach.

And what's going to happen when the team still sucks because we're still "Dream '16" and still not ready?

Guess we just move on to firing whoever's next.

Look, I want Lindy fired just like the rest of you. But continuing to carry on over and over and over when your mind is clearly on one track (Fire Ruff) and everything that is said on these forums has turned into "well, how can I work Lindy sucking into this?", that's a problem.

Sigh.

I would say #2 is the reason people don't want Ruff fired. People are naturally scared of change and this fear gets worse as you age. Would make sense why my dad and all of his buddies want to keep Ruff around

I sure hope they don't... 2010-2011 all over again... that was the year Ruff should've finally been canned... and we should've had the elite draft pick (Couturier). We should've entered an honest rebuild then.

Let a new coach groom a young team and we can talk about it when it actually happens... Ruff had a shot in 2002... and again in 2008.... and again in 2012.... times up
