Jesus ,Ovechkin is such a one-dimensional player, all he can do now is shoot back in the day he actually did some playmaking too.

I think by that he means players with winning mentality, doesnt have to from NHL (although that helps)

Oh common, what winning mentality are we lacking?? Our small country has been in the elite division for how many years?? Haven't we been to the Olympics 3 consecutive times?? What we really lack is simply talent. Yes, there have been times and cases when you think our players lack some drive eg Sprukts and Karsums. But in general we have a drive. It is mainly talent that we lack.

And there is no 100% guarantee that Girgs will stay motivated for ever to play during the WC. Assuming he's free to attend.

Probably not,but WC is second-tier tournament anyway, what IS important is if he will attend Olympics, which i have not doubt he will.

LOL, you do realise he's been the playmaker on this 1st line all tournament long?

Havent seen other Russian games,im just going by what i saw today. Still, doesnt change the fact Ovechkin is one-dimensional and thats especially obvious in NHL where half his goals are powerplay one-timers.

Oh, well! Didn't really expect much. Hopefully we can get back in the groove and deliver in the next games that matter the most.

That's a stereotype. That's a stupid stereotype. That's a stereotype from ppl who don't really know Ovechkin's game.

It's not Ovechkin's fault he has to do what the coach is telling him on the ice. A fired coach by now. with Znarok he's anything else but one-dimensional, but ppl can stick to their stereotypes if it makes it easier for them.

We've been in the elite division, but have we ever won anything? No. It's obvious that players like Girgensons/Daugavins have different thinking than those who are playing in Europe etc. But that doesn't mean that we can't win games.

Does Switzerland have bunch of NHL/KHL etc. talents like Sweden? No, but they still somehow managed to get to the finals.

Ovi scores so much, that people even get annoyed by it and start makin this kind of bs up

Right, because Znarok is so famous for letting players playing their own style, rather than, you know, sticking stricktly by gameplan  I`m sorry but did you even watch Dynamo Moscows last two cup runs?

I`m personally not annoyed by Ovechin,i used to like him, but the way he plays now is just so much worse than he could be. Also he has that problem with consistency in play-offs and you know actually winning anything.

So, pretty booring game overall.

Great that Kristers had a solid 2nd half of the game, lets hope it helps him in future games.

LOL go tell some other three time hart trophy winners (last one 1 year ago) that they are playing much worse than they could, and that they havent won anything :laugh::laugh:

Just get over the latvian loss man.

I dont even care that we lost to Russia, since the most important games are ahaed of us.
When i say he hasnt won anything i mean exactly that- Having harts trophies means absolutley nothing when you have neither Olympic Gold or Stanley cup.

Fair enough, Swiss is not on the same tier as Sweden. But neither is Latvia on the same tier as Swiss. We do lack talent compared to Swiss team. And apparently that gap makes the difference between winning and losing (medals).

And so what... lets assume all our players play for winning teams and then they come together and play for Latvian NT. So ****ing what?? If our players weren't the ones with the skill and the talent that made their club a winning team, they will be very little use to our NT. Winning mentality solves nothing, if the players themselves aren't talented.

Girgensons is good not because he has a special 'winning' mentality - also as you pointed it out, he plays for the Sabre's - but primarily because he actually has some talent. Of course I'm not trying to take away from his "hard work pays" attitude. In fact that's the attitude we need, not some winning mentality..

And I don't think winning mentality equals "hard work pays" mentality.

I only caught the last 15 minutes, which were quite boring. Latvia looked either tired or were simply reserving their power for the next game. Lots of sloppy passes, weak/slow skating, etc. Hopefully Girgs doesn't get too many extra games, although I've yet to see the play. Doesn't sound promising though. Knowing the end result, I kind of wish they would have put Punnenovs in. It could have given him a Guddy type push before the NHL draft. Perhaps he'll still get his chance if they wrap up a QF spot against Belarus. Too bad Latvia couldn't convince Tikhonov to play for them all those years ago.

Who got goals for both teams?

Indrašis for Latvia, Tikhonov with 2, Shirokov and Kalinin with one each for Russia.

No doubt, Russia belong with Canada and Sweden for me this year to the big favourites for the title.

I predict a Russia - Canada final. When did Russia and Canada win the last time the title?

Canada won the wc in 2007, Russia - in 2012.

More even, I watched Ovechkin play for Dynamo Moscow. One dimensional is the NA press that keeps repeating it like a mantra.
