Player Discussion Mattias Ekholm

Not sure if this was posted yet, but it's sure interesting nonetheless.

EDITA: pretty sure Sportsnet meant Ulanov and not Mironov.

So I'm not crazy, Mironov was out of the league in 05-06, so do they mean Tarnstrom? I'm confused. Maybe it was Ulanov.

Mironov definitely wasn't on the Oilers in 05-06, think I would've remembered that. It would have to be Tarnstrom or Ulanov or like Gator or Staois somehow or they're just wrong.

EDIT: Think it's Ulanov. He apparently scored twice in a game against Calgary in December 2005 (game was at Rexall). It looks Mike Morrison started the game (?) and got pulled and Jussi Markanen finished it. Pisani with the game winner late.

I was looking, and it had to be Staios or Ulanov, because none of the other defensemen, including Tarnstrom, had enough goals to have 2 in one game lol

Edit: Cross had 2 before he was trade, maybe him? lol Gator had 4, but in 76 games, so I doubt he had 2 in 1 game, but who knows. Either way, Mironov was not playing for the Oilers that year.

2 goals, Oilers win 5-4 over the Flames, right before the Christmas break.

I sorta remember this stretch, the Oilers went red hot into Christmas that year being no.1 in the division I think (?) or something like that, and it was like a lot of heat around Edmonton about getting a goalie, because they were doing it with bad goaltending (3rd stringer Mike Morrison was getting starts at that point).

So the whole thing was "Lowe needs to get a goalie now!!!! Team is legit otherwise!". Lots of people at that stage I believe wanted Marty Biron from Buffalo badly as Buffalo had two good goalies.

I'm so glad we traded for him and not any of the other names floating around.
Straight up. Karlsson would have been incredible as well but what Ekholm has brought leaves me speechless most games. Like what bad game has he had? I can't think of a god damn bad shift let alone game.

Way way WAAYYY better offensively than I ever thought possible, especially after Kenny called him a defensive defenseman in that first presser.

Karlsson would've been nice but the health issues are always a concern. This guy does it at both ends of the ice.

Oh F yeah he does. TBH I still hope we can somehow swing a Karlsson trade this summer. Watching him last night I can only imagine what he could do with McDrai.

That being said, I'm not sure if there is a package any team could offer for Ekholm which would make me consider moving him.

Karlsson at his age and cap hit was always a hard nope for me. He’s having a great season but he’s absolutely going hard for points every shift. Think he’d be dangling guys at the blue line, last man back, like he is if the team was an actual contender. I doubt it. Much happier with Ekholm and his two-way play.

I know it's WAAAAAY too early to bring this up.

But if his scoring and his play keeps up until next season (No reason to believe it wouldn't given his history and pedigree)... he could potentially be a legitimate Norris candidate.

He's been THAT good for us.

Ekholm was such a massive add. He is our best defenseman. So happy to have him. I wish we had 1 more top pairing guy on this team. xxx-Ekholm-Nurse-Bouchard-Ceci-Kulak-Desharnais/Broberg. A top pairing right handed shot who plays defense would put this team into the top 2-3 in the league.
Trying to upgrade that this summer should be the priority (along with figuring out what to do with Campbell).

From what Preds fans have said, he was put in more shutdown role. Never had much PP time (Josi was the guy) and NSH was always a pretty low scoring team. That second pairing of theirs was a hell of a shutdown pairing.

He's getting a lot more chances on the Oilers. His offensive game is coming out. Dudes got some talent!
Yeah, I sont know about that.. when defensive players comes out of their defensive role, they tend to live it behind a bit scoring goals is just fun and that triggers to do more. I kind of wish Ekholm priorities defensive and shutdown first. Edmonton needs a serious defensive specialist.
