He can just take his QO of 9m and go to UFA no?

In Tkachuk's case, I thought the options were as follows (not 100% sure if I'm right though):
  1. Player and team agree to an extension.
  2. Qualifying Offer ("QO")
    1. Team does not extend QO - player immediately becomes UFA
    2. Team tenders QO to retain negotiation rights to that player - QO must meet minimum requirements based on CBA - $9m AAV minimum in Tkachuk's case.
      1. Player accepts QO
      2. Player does not accept QO -
        1. team and player continue negotiations
        2. player files for arbitration
        3. player potentially signs an offer sheet with another team.

Yeah because Brady had a vonus from last season
You can hope all you want, but I don't see Tkachuk settling for 50k more than his brother. Far too many comparables or even lesser players have been locked up for more. The bridge was structured this way for a reason and 9 million will be the starting point.

With only 1 year left on his contract he has a lot of bargaining power. I’d say somewhere between 9-9.5 mill for 6-8 years.

it looks like the best thing for him to do is take that 9m QO and go to free agency every team in the league wants a player like that or have Calgary over pay on a long term extension

If Brady is making 8.2, Matt is going to want at least 9 on a long term deal. He’s the better player atm and these are all ufa years outside of next season.

He's going to sign/trade with the Devils to go play for his Uncle and along side Jack Hughes. Book it - 8 Years/8M to fit under their salary structure. Calgary's in a supah shitty position.

My point is that the Flames taking him to arbitration to get a better deal is not the answer. Actually, if it is succesfull it likely increases the chances of MT leaving as UFA.

If the fLames want to keep him, they have to negociate a long term deal, and anything below 9 mil is probably a no from MT.
They arent taking him to arbitration, they are filing for it. For example, this most recent summer 3 team filed for arbitration on an RFA, one of those RFA's Brandon Carlo. Carlo and Boston then proceeded to agree to a 6 year deal before the arbitration date.

Filling for arbitration sets a deadline for reaching a deal.... And with a hard deadline which is more detrimental to Calgary than to MT, I fail to see how it helps Calgary reach a deal at a better salary (which was what the post I was answering to was saying).

You left out:
3. Team files for arbitration in the 1st window in leu of a qualifying offer
(If a contract is not signed before the arbitration hearing then tue arbitration can award at minimum 85% of the previous seasons salary)

Wdym? There is already a deadline set, July 1st. Thats when all QO's have yo be extended by. And if Tkachuk doesnt accept a 9Mx1 QO then he will 100% file for arbitration anyways, thus another deadline set.

Huh? The Flames just have to submit the QO by July 1st, there is no deadline for an extension.

Thachuk is not worth 9+ million per year to Calgary. Now he should be worth 2 medium rnd 1st's.

I feel like that’s reasonable but that’s way too close to what his brother got and Matthew can contribute more offensively

0.65 Brady
0.79 ppg Matthew

Their career ppg aren't too far off of each other yet Brady plays with who for his career?

Also they have an identical 0.84 ppg this year.

The idea that Matthew is much better offensively than Brady is silliness.

Extra year or two of development too. Brady will be the better player offensively and defensively.

based on what? ...having never been better offensively at any point in his career, or even showing flashes of being better on the offensive side?
BT is what he is, and, what he is not is a superior offensive player to Matthew.

You'd be fine with Tkachuk at 9+ million per year?

What the hell? He's definitely not worth that

I didnt say I would be fine or that he's worth it, I said I wouldnt be mad. I'm just mentally preparing myself because I'm sure he's gonna be overpaid a lot.

Brady's skating is better than Mathew and at somepoint that will be the difference between the two.
