Sorry, I do not see that. Mac and McD scare the shit on dmen when they are coming at them one on one. They will go around you or through you. Marner is not that type of threat. Let's see if he can dance in the playoffs. I have never seen the NHL so soft in the regular season. I see players using their sticks battling for pucks in their skates in front of the net. In the playoffs, a dman will knock you on your ass to separate you from the puck.

WRT ... this season's play.

I'm not sure I've seen so many uncontested empty net goals.

Maybe it is the NBA influence, but the "no frickin way are you scoring on my team" attitude doesn't seem to exist to the same extent. Players just letting the opposition skate away, with it seems an oh-well approach.

Maybe too many games, players can now hold the puck in their own zone for 15-20 seconds doing nothing to the final whistle.

I can see it though, games over, lets go have a beer.

Just watch when he's in the offensive zone with the puck. In years prior his feet weren't moving, he was still creating space and finding lanes. This season his feet have constantly been moving when he has the puck, he's always moving, accelerating or slowing down just always moving his feet. Plus he's hitting/finishing his checks, that's creating turnovers as well.
Yeah one can see he is trying to play to Berube's style. Both he and Nylander look dangerous in the offensive zone with the puck on a string. I'm talking more attacking the offensive zone from your blue line/neutral zone and intimidating their d with that breakaway speed. Not many do it like McD and Mac. They showed Mac blowing by Middleton (Wild) on a Desjardins commercial yesterday. Lots of similar McDavid highlights.

I’ll take the 2 points but the team looked drunk. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Tavares play as bad as he did tonight. What a brutal performance. Woll was shaky but he’s allowed a bad game once in a while lol. And what can you say about Knies! Omg what a game! This kid is a beast.

Used to be teams pulled their goalies with 60+ seconds left. Now they pull them with minutes to go and sometimes keep their goalies pulled after giving up one ENG and give up a second. Our guys love those EN points. Helps justify their contracts IMO. I'm not buying it like I do not buy 4 of Marner's 5 points last night.

Let's review.

1. Primary assist on opening goal (full credit)
2. Flips puck from neutral zone behind Bruins net. MacAvoy picks up and shoots puck around the boards. Matthews incepts, passes to Knies for tip in goal. Marner was later given an assist. Guessing Paul spoke to the score keeper in between periods or bought him a $20 beer. LOL.
3. In Leafs zone, passes puck up to Tavares and changes. Tavares carries puck over the Bruins blue line, passes to Knies who scores a great goal.
4. Scores ENG after getting around Bruins dman who doesn't take the body and allows Marner to get around him.
5. Banks puck off the boards down the ice where Matthews outraces MacAvoy and dives for the ENG.

Empty calories IMO but most of the stars get them. Unfortunately the Leafs have to pay a premium for them. With the 5 points, he's going to ask for more than Draisaitl money.

Knies 2nd goal was just ridiculous.

Did my heart good to see Matthews play the way he did. Didn’t even realize he was playing until I started watching.

Woll was good enough to win but that wasn’t a great performance by any description.

Noticing Myers more and more, in a good way. Looks like he’s taken Timmins job, and is a better fit with Rielly. Still need a better 2RHD to drop Myers to the 3RHD and pair with OEL, but he’s looking solid if unspectacular, which I will definitely take.

All told, I have to admit the team is looking pretty good at this point.

Winning the division with all the injuries they've had (and Matthews most of all, missing more than 1/3 of the games and clearly less than 100% - save for last night apparently).

Bottom 6 still a concern, special teams not stellar, not great on the road and health questions surrounding their goalies & Matthews. But overall they're in a pretty good spot heading into the 2nd half of the schedule.

Isn't it all relative though? Doesn't every player get some points that are more "impressive" than others? Marner is top five in NHL scoring? You don't think other players have got EN points? PP points? Secondary points?

Don't empty net goals signify that your coach entrusted you with those minutes? Also, Marner is third in the league in primary assists too.

Marner is the only player in the league that consistently gets the wrong kind of points. It’s all a mirage.

If most stars score "empty calorie" points then why does this feel like a focus on Marner? Premium? As in we have to overpay for everyone? Again, why a focus on Marner.

How does his PK and Selke-consideration two way play fit into your assessment of his value? You don't consider him a top ten player in the league this year I take it?

Just realized that this is the Knies thread so we should not be focusing on Marner here. Marner is a top 10 player so far this year. I just do not see him being in the class of game changers such as McD, Mac, Leon, Matty, Kutch etc. and should not be paid a such IMO. Without the cap, overpay him all you like but overpaying him again will f*** our chances for a SC going forward. Be a difference maker from games 83 on and fans will not have an issue with the contract. Get paid now and shit the bed in April and some fans will be relentless for the next 8 years. Book it.

I am not a die hard Marner fan, but also don't agree with what you wrote here. However, as you pointed out this is a Knies thread. We can pick this up some other time and some other place.

I dont think we talk about how dogshit the Bruins defense is. Brandon Carlo is a walking pylon and McAvoy is both overrated and overpaid

If it was the leafs, there would be threads open in the main board about how abysmal the defense is.

I can only name two others that can do what McD and Mack do. They are Makar and Q Hughes. Esp Makar as he actually attacks the net.

Your being generous giving Marner credit for goal #1. The Bruins broadcast team and Bruins intermission panel with former NHL goalie Raycroft gave full credit to Matthews for goal #1. Marners name didnt even come up when they were showering Matthews with praise for the play.

Thats a classic stick lift steal by Matthews. His second career goal he did a similar play on Karlsson - He fakes left and than picks the pocket on the right side. In this case he faked left and then stick lifted on the right.

I'm sure we will pick it up in April when they play for keeps. ;)
Yep, I don't want Marner signed until after we see if he is capable of more when it matters.

Back to Knies, I think his game is made for the playoffs and we have seen glimpses of this already. If he can be healthy, I think he can be a playoff force. I think he and McMann are big reasons for optimism for different playoff fortunes. I think Lorentz too. It's why I am seeing Kampf and Jarnkrok moved out. I have seen that movie and they don't bring what fourth liners need to bring in the playoffs.
