Toronto Maple Leafs: Matthew Knies Nominated for Award
Toronto Maple Leafs prospect, Matthew Knies, has been nominated for the 2023 Hobey Baker Award. An award given to the top NCAA men's ice hockey player.
I think it was Jimmy Vesey. The Predators had traded his rights to the Sabres and after that is when he signed as a college UFA with the Rangers on August 20, 2016.Who was the last Hobey winner to be traded before playing an NHL game?
If the right deal is there I don't mind him going.Awesome. Likely not the winner but a great nomination.
Leafs would be wise to not trade him

Does this mean he's a finalist? Like top 3 or does every team have to nominate 1 player
Knies team has two other elite prospects so if he went over them that's huge
I looked at the Hobey winners since mid 1980s and only a handful were very good. And 3/4 have been fairly recent.
It’s interesting… the list from 2015 on includes Eichel, Makar, Caufield. All who won it after their first or second seasons.
Other winners were a bit older - Gaudette for example - who haven’t done much yet
Basically the younger you are to win the better you’re chances are of being a good NHLer![]()
yup it looks like he is 1 of 80 , still good he got nominated even if it's a huge list but i was a little disappointed since the op kind of made it sound like he was a finalistHave the nominations been narrowed down to 3 finalists yet?
I tried a quick google search, and the only article I saw says that as of today (Feb 8 20023), there are 80 players nominated? Is that right? That Knies right now is in the running with 79 other players?
When Toronto signed Tyler Bozak he was a college UFA after playing at the University of Denver and he went onto play 13 years in the NHL between the Leafs and Blues. The one slight difference is he only played 2 years in the NCAA instead of 4 years. The NCAA hasn’t been the best path to the NHL historically. Players who by choice play out the 4 years don’t usually amount to much. That would fall in-line with your statement I guess.

Thx. I hope he winsIt's essentially the equivalent of the CHL Player of the year.
It's named after a guy who was generally seen as the first renowned US hockey star. He played during the early 1910s
That would be if he won it this year, though. It’s more of distinction to actually win it, even as a 4th or 5th? year player than it is to make an early list of 80 players. There's a big difference though between a 4th year player (even 5th year) winning vs a sophomore though.
