Buyout isn't horrible. $687k on the cap this year. $2 million next year, but I'm already thinking that next season might be a retooling year anyways with Matthews/Nylander new AAV's kicking in with Tavares still on the books, the team might take a step back that year regardless of the buyout.
Don't we have to shed $9 M before the season starts ?

Nick Kypreos of the Toronto Star wondered if Dubas still has interest in Matt Murray.

Dubas acquired Murray for the Toronto Maple Leafs over the previous off-season and wanted to give him a respectful push as a starting goalie.

Injuries got in the way and sidelined Murray for all but 26 games in 2022-23; he went 14-8-2 in those contests with a 3.01 goals against average and .903 save percentage.

Kypreos states that Dubas wanted Murray to stay in Toronto to finish his contract with earns him a total of $6.25 million; thanks to retained salary, Murray’s current cap hit is $4,687,500 with the Maple Leafs.

Dubas has always had a soft spot for players that played with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the OHL, and that’s exactly where Murray played junior hockey. For three seasons, Dubas was general manager of the Greyhounds while Murray was the starting goalie. Perhaps that connection is still strong for Dubas and he wants to not only reunite again with a former Greyhound, but also reunite a two-time Stanely Cup Champion with his victorious franchise?

Unfortunately a lot of reports make it seem like we will be unable to LTIR him.

Do we have to give up the 1st for him if so?

Id almost rather just send him to the Marlies until he gets hurt in 10 games and eat the 3 whatever million that isn't buried from the transaction

I wouldn’t give up an asset to move him or buy him out…. Why…. He’s the opposite of Phil kessel.

The Hawks traded for Mzarek who was owed more real money than Murray and was under contract for a year longer.
Chicago didn't get a mid round pick, then got Leafs 1st round pick #25th overall & there was method to that madness as they were tanking for Connor Bedard which worked to perfection.

Chicago already had 2 other 1st, 3 X 2nds and 3 X 3rds. So by taking on Mrazek they picked 3 times in the 1st round in 2022.

You're not hoping Treliving includes Leafs 1st in 2023 with Murray to dump him are you by using the Mrazek example?

The Leafs traded Mrazek for 13 spots in the draft, which had a similar value to a mid round pick.

If he's getting back an early 2nd like the Mrazek trade, that sounds pretty good.

I think the point is the Leafs can trade down again in the draft and dump Murray.

If we're really running back the 4 up front I'm actually leaning towards just burying him unless the cost to dump is incredibly small. Assuming that Knies, Holmberg, and one of the Nicks are on the opening day roster, and Brodie is gone to reinvent the D. Re-sign Samsonov to 4 by X
With a buried Murray the goaltending still only costs around 8.2, with 15.1m
for Top 4D, two Top 9 forwards, 4th line forward, Spare forward, Spare D. 3m combined for the depth leaves 12.1 for the D and two top 9's.

Worst case is that he's a pissbaby about it and sent home to wait out the season. Best, plays well with the Marlies, moved with retention when another team runs into injury trouble.

Any meaningful asset used to dump him could also be used as part of a deal for a retained player that can help us this year and next (like McCabe)

Kyle Dubas may be targeting a Leafs goaltender to take with him to Pittsburgh

Nick Kypreos of The Toronto Star,

Heading into this summer, goaltending was among the biggest question marks in Toronto. With how well Joseph Woll and Ilya Samsonov had played last season, there was a strong belief that they would be the tandem next season, with Matt Murray being on the outside looking in. While common sense told us that the Leafs would likely go with Samsonov/Woll in 2023-24, Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos is reporting that Kyle Dubas liked Matt Murray and was prepared to stand behind his bet and roll with Murray for the final year of his deal, which would have meant either rolling 3 goalies again this year or losing one of Woll or Samsonov.

It seems incredibly unlikely that Kyle Dubas wouldn’t learn from his mistakes, but according to Nick Kypreos of The Toronto Star, the former Toronto Maple Leafs GM is potentially prepared to go round two with Matt Murray. Kypreos then wonders if Dubas is open to bringing the often-injured goaltender to Pittsburgh now that he is the new President and GM of the Penguins. If Kypreos is correct and Dubas was thinking about running it back one more year with Murray in the fold in Toronto, it seems to indicate one of two things: there is either still a belief by the NHL executive that Murray has something left to offer or Dubas wants to strike a deal to take on Murray’s contract.

As Kypreos also mentioned, Dubas could look to reunite Murray with his former Pittsburgh Penguins. There's a lot of uncertainty right now in Pittsburgh with regard to goaltending. Tristan Jarry is set to hit unrestricted free agency on July 1st, which puts the Pens in a difficult situation, with only Casey DeSmith signed through next season. Bringing in Matt Murray would, at the very least, provide a veteran body with which DeSmith could share the crease. However, with durability concerns on Murray, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Pens also try to wrangle up an insurance option in Pittsburgh to ensure that they're not left with one NHL netminder for long stints this season if Murray's health doesn't hold up.

Can we not just LTIR him? Let him take a year off to get completely healthy and then have him sign a PTO with another team to try and restore his carrer.

It depends on how much you value the 13 draft slots between the pick that went with Mzarek and the 2nd the Leafs got in return for him. which is probably in the range of a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

I'd rather pay a prospect or a mild sweetner to move Murray than buy him out.

Nick Kypreos said on Real Kipper and Borne today he heard before Dubas was fired his intention was to extend Matt Murray.

What.

Matt Murray back to Pittsburgh?

Matt Murray and Timmins for Rutta is still something I wouldn't be entirely shocked to see or something in that neighbourhood.

I can't see us being willing to take on Granlund unless there was some retention, like 1.5M
