Murray is done for the year and everybody knows it. Better save that 1st for the offseason to dump this disaster.
People freak out over the silliest things, and then propose the most ridiculous possible response to their made up crisis..

This is solely a paper transaction backdated to his last start. He's eligible to come off anytime, but it allows Woll to come up on an emergency loan. This is IR, not LTIR.

The end.

The great thing about injuries this year is it allowed players like Sandin, Liljegren, Timmins to get opportunities and grow as players. Samsonov has benefited from Murray's absence as well. I hope Woll gets an opportunity.

Lol. A paper transaction for a short-term injury we already knew about, that seems to be on schedule, and this thread is full of talk of him not playing another game as a Leaf, retiring, buyouts, paying to get rid of him, etc.

Even funnier is about a month ago, most people were talking about how great he was playing, and how he was the obvious playoff starter over Samsonov.

Is anybody really comfortable with the prospect of going into the playoffs with Woll and Samsonov.

It's a very real possibility.

In his presser today Dubas specifically said he was not looking for a goalie. Now that may be true, but if memory serves me correctly he said something similar last year and it leaked out later that he tried to acquire Fleury.

I can't see how anyone could be happy with the goaltending situation right now.

Garrett Sparks was going to be the goalie of the future too one time. The next Vezina winner to take it's to the promised land. Is it normal for a GM to have three different starting goaltenders in five years?

I don't think it is.

We're not going into the playoffs with Samsonov and Woll. We're going into the playoffs with Samsonov and Murray, which is a pretty good tandem.
No, it's not a Vasilevsky or the top Vezina candidate that we'll likely face in the 1st and 2nd round, but there's nobody like that available.
We didn't get a goalie last year, but you think we're going to get a goalie this year when we already have two goalies with pretty good results, and a prospect on fire?

I didn't say it WAS going to happen. I said it was a possibility. And it is a very real possibility.

You can .reassure yourself all you want that it WILL be Murray and Samsonov.

But the two haven't been healthy at the same time for more than a couple games all season. Would should that change for a small seven game stretch in the spring. I'm sorry, but Ottawa paid Kyle Dubas to take Murray of their hands for good reason.

It has the potential to become very bad very quickly for Kyle Dubas.

They've both been healthy for a lot more than just a couple of games, both are projected to be healthy for the playoffs, and you only really need one in the playoffs anyway. I don't see anybody available that's a meaningful upgrade.

I said at the same time.

It's was a questionable move when Dubas took Murray on. Much ado was made about the injury history. This is the second time he's been shelved for a lengthy period now.

I mean, you're probably right.

But if we're gonna be honest here I think we both know that goaltending has never been a strong point for Kyle Dubas. He's botched it right from the get go with the whole Garrett Sparks ordeal. Another move that much consternation was made at the time and proved to be correct. I'm not saying it WILL Happen.

But you must recognize that the possibility of something resulting in severe consequences is very real.

According to cap friendly it will cost the Leafs 687,000 in cap in 2023-2024 and then 2.0m in 2024-2025. It's no ideal but completely manageable.

24/25 is going to be the tougher year cap wise so I would much prefer to just bite the bullet on the cap next year than buy him out.

Much like many of the posters here, I expect Kid Kyle figures that Woll is the new saviour and can't wait to get him into the Leafs net.

I don't think it is.

The reigning cup winner went through Georgiev, Kuemper, Francouz, Grubauer in the last 3 years. Boston went from Rask to 2 years of various platoon combinations with Halak/Swayman/Ullmark/Rask to Ullmark looking like a Vezina candidate. Carolina’s gone through Raanta, Mrazek, Andersen, Kochetkov in a 3 or 4 year window.

Other than Tampa what serious contenders have had 5+ years of stability in net recently? Seems like all the recent long-term goalie deals either look like massive mistakes or they’re wasting away on bubble teams. It’s basically just Vasilievski and maybe Shesterkin looking like long term options on contenders.

Leafs traded what for Murray?

I forget the details, was it a 3rd. and 7th.?

And what did the Leafs get out of it? 11 wins 5 losses, 2 OT Losses?

Leafs gave up future considerations and.got the picks in return with Murray.

Funnily enough with goalies being the way they are I still won't be surprised if he's starting game 1 in April. Ideally Samsonov can cement things by then. But at this rate goalies are still voodoo

With goalies the best ability is availability.

Last year the Leafs got 20 starts and 12 wins from the often injured Mrazek for $3.8 mil cap usage, and so far this season Leafs have gotten 19 starts and 11 wins from Murray for a slightly higher price point $4.697 mil.

So close to a break-even team record return to this point in time, and although nobody knows when Murray will be back perhaps with 30 games left in the season Leafs can get another 10 starts and perhaps squeeze another 5-6 more wins. :crossfing, but that is strictly guess work and wishful thinking.

Leafs took on a contract dump of an often injured goalie and he is living up to his reputation coming in as advertised and can't be relied on this year either due to injuries.

Good news is last year Joseph Woll was asked to step in and he provided 4 starts and 3 wins last year and will likely get an opportunity now to build or repeat on that. Maybe he performs well the Leafs put Murray on ice for the rest of the regular season and see if they can get anything out of him come playoff time. Woll may be the Leafs goalie of the future and we get a chance now to see what he can do.

"Play the kids" .
