Sure Murray has let in a soft goal a game, but how many brutally point blank shots has he stopped? Also there’s nothing he can do about guys being wide open back door to tap it in

The "soft goal let in" vs "save he shouldn't have made" meter is still very much in Murray's favour.

It's easier to forgive the "soft" ones (I don't even think any have been particularly egregious) when the guy is making grade A goal saving saves left right and center.

He's also stopped a lot of shots including some high quality chances, he's needs the rest of the team to step up too.

Exactly, he should have had the first one but was completely left out to dry in the 2nd period

Look at that 2nd period by the numbers lol :

GF-GA : 0-3
CF-CA : 11-34
SF-SA : 8-16
SCF-SCA : 4-19
HDCF-HDCA : 2-7

Are we really surprised we gave up 3 goals in that period?

The 1st and 3rd combined :

GF-GA : 1-1
CF-CA : 33-29
SF-SA : 20-13
SCF-SCA : 17-14
HDCF-HDCA : 9-3

Had he really made saves he shouldnt have made though? Like it’s be nothing incredible. Like he’s not making saves that other goalies are not.

He's been steady back there, positionally solid, not over playing. I wasn't a fan of him in Pittsburgh, but it looks like he'll be a good fit here.

I don’t bLame tonight on him at all. Didn’t think anything great of his play in the first three games though

Yeah I don't really see where the superlatives for his play came from. He's not the reason Ottawa are losing by any means, but I don't think he's done anything spectacular, and he's definitely let in a few goals that I think he should have/could have done better on.

I think when fans start breaking down individual shots and if it was good or not, the goalie is not playing well. For a long time Ottawa saw a good goalie on a bad team, we know what that looks like probably better then any other market - this is not what is happening. We are not seeing solid or excellent goaltending - we are seeing below average goaltending.

if Ottawa wanted average goaltending they could of gone with Hogberg all season.

it’s about winning or giving your team a chance to win. He’s not doing either. Ottawa played great game 1 vs Winnipeg and they lost because the goaltending wasn’t there.

Anyone blaming Murray for last night's loss needs a new hobby.

Sure but we also knew that this team was probably going to be near the bottom of the league again & it would most likely be another transition yr.
Which is why the lineup decisions have been horrible. Even last night Hogberg should have started. They are playing the same team 3 games in a row. DJ Smith has been the worst of anyone in the organization up to this point.

Give him 15-20 games and then let's decide. He hasn't had any help.

He does seem a tad deep in the net at times, and also a bit over committed. He slid over for one toe pad save last night in the 1st on a nice cross ice set up by Ehlers to Copp, and looked like there was a good foot of space on the left side available, while his whole left pad (covering the shooters right) was totally out of net. Had my eye brows raised, despite making the save. Just one play though. Jury is still out.

There is no substance to this quote and it’s simple a mistake. DJ has simply played the best players.

It unfortunate that players like Wolanin and White arn’t as good as Reilly or Watson

Murray has a Bobby Ryan in Ottawa vibe.

Whipping boy vibe? Of course, any player getting paid will. If Chabot was older and not an homegrown talent, it would be the same. Heck, imagine if EK got his current contract in Ottawa. We wouldn't have Stutzle and Norris and would be "stuck" with that contract.

Bobby Ryan is a pretty good hockey player and he has proved it pretty much all his career when he was healthy. However he has often been diminished by injuries and mental health problems but that's not something that every hockey fan put in consideration because they think players are like robots.

It's the same with those people saying Erik Karlsson sucks. Well, it's not really because he "sucks" but many people still don't understand anything related to science so it's not that surprising, and I think it has been proven in 2020 with the pandemic. These might say "lol his injuries are an excuse"

Back to last night's game, anyone blaming Murray doesn't have a very good hockey IQ/understanding. I wouldn't put much stock in their takes.

Like most goalies, been the same with Carey Price for example.

No, he hasn't been elite by any means but it's been a whooping 4 games and hasn't played a lot of hockey in 10 months. People expecting perfection are going to be disappointed, it's a guarantee.

A better defense with more awareness, positionning, mobility and puck moving ability would help Murray quite a lot.

No but there are really good goalies, good goalies , average goalies and bad goalies

Yes but "Like he’s not making saves that other goalies are not" also doesn't mean anything. That was what I was hinting at. All goalies make saves they should not, or give goals they should have stopped. What differentiate them is consistency

matt Murray stopped pucks he’d be a bargain. If he’s just a goalie for an elite team, he’s not the right goalie

Pretty much all goalies look "bad" on rebuilding teams... only some very special elite ones (like Hasek or Luongo) would still look elite. Carey Price "struggles" at times on the Habs, so imagine in Ottawa. The Sens will be at the bottom of the standings for a 4th season in a row for several reasons, and not solely because of goaltending.

It will be hard for him to be worth 6.25 per on this team. I forgot it was that high, in my memory I thought it was like 5.25... but Dorion and signing goalies hasn't been a success in the past (Condon, Anderson last contract)

He can be better and we need him to be better, we need him to make more key saves, but very few goalies in history would make a big difference on this team. Sens are not particularly good in any zone. Just poorly constructed and poorly coached.

Sub .900 after 4 games is pretty consistent we will see. I am tentative on excitement over Murray.

Yes he will need to stabilize that. Carey Price and Freddy Andersen have poor stats too. Those defense will need to stablize too. Coaches will work on this. I'm sure DJ will do some miracles

The North division will be high scoring. Not playing against other NHL teams won't help these goalie stats

Only Markstrom and Hellebuyck have good stats so far

i guess the question has to be asked - if this is supposed to be a rebuilt team, did they cheap out on the foundation?

Early returns don’t look good. We were promised kids kids kids for years, and I’m watching Galchenyuk take lazy penalties like he did in 2016 and Arty Party skate around wondering why the puck is moving so fast.

Id rather see Hogberg, Abramov and Logan Brown fail and learn then re-watch Galchenyuk fail again and not learn anything.

Just like any other goalie .. #1 stop the ones your supposed to stop.

He hasn't done that but he has made some grade A saves.

The timing of the bad goal is often the most important thing.

It's a team that finished bottom-2 for 3 straight seasons. Getting guys like Murray and Dadonov help solidify the team but the rest of the moves are survival at best.

We have 3 proven pieces, a top-6 forward (Tkachuk), a 1st pairing D-man (Chabot) and a bottom-6 forward (Paul)

IMO, they are premature with this "desire to compete". After not playing for 10 months, we needed a major developmental season, BADLY.

Hopefully it doesn't screw up the rebuild. Thank God we have pieces like Batherson, Norris, Stutzle, Sanderson, Pinto, Formenton coming up. Maybe Brannstrom and Brown (but don't see them succeeding in Ottawa as long as DJ is here)

All that being said, I'm very uncertain of the plan/direction. All we can do is wait for these pieces to get comfortable with more experience.
