the way zuke has played since returning i think his free agent status is somewhat irrelevant. we'll resign him no question.

His playoff performance is going to factor in big. If he's a no show there, I'm not even sure they qualify him (though they probably will). If he's UFA the asking price is bound to be higher. What's the Rangers limit for resigning him as an UFA? My guess would be around 1,5.
If we don't go deep this year and he's an RFA, I can see him signing a QO. Say he does reasonably well in the playoffs and can be signed for 900k(?) / 1 year, I don't see a lot of reasons for not signing him.

While it may not be a given, I think it's likely he'll be re-signed. At least if he manages to keep up his current level of play, which IMO has been fantastic despite his points deficit.
You see him do good things on the ice, and it shows up even more in his advanced stats. Many have argued that Zuccarello's value extends very little beyond his points due to his size, and if he's only putting up 0.5PPG he isn't of much use. I'm of the opposite opinion - what Zucc brings extends well beyond his points. He is always tilting the ice in our favour when he is out there, and that is huge in today's hockey. The "size is king" line of thinking was correct in the pre-2004 DPE, but the players bringing the most value outside their points today are the possession players that give your team control over the flow of the game.
Give him an "Islanders contract", low cap hit but longer term for a player unsure of his status in the league. He'll take it to get job security, and the contract may end up a huge steal in the end. 3-4 years at 1-1.5M/y.

If he reaches 80 games, he'll remain an RFA. If he does NOT reach 80 games before the season is over (including playoffs), he'll become an UFA.
Uuups, I had it backwards. Well that certainly is good news for Zucc. Perhaps not so good for the NYR unless they go deeper than I suspect most of us think they will
With McDonagh, Stepan, and Hagelin being RFA's this offseason, I think the importance of resigning Mats Zuccarello is pretty low on the priority list.

So by the look of it, unless we get into the conference finals, or play 13 playoff games, he'll be a UFA.
He is still unproven enough for us to be able to bring him back affordable, in all likelihood. I don't expect Detroit to throw a 3 year, 9 million offer his way like they might have had he stayed this year.

Well, they basically are to him if he stays a RFA.
I dont see teams tripping over themselves to give him an offer sheet.

I guess I should add that I saw my first game at MSG in 89 (just in case Rangerboy comes flying in accusing me of just being here because of Mats)

Zuc will get an NHL deal somewhere, maybe NYR but not sure if he's UFA now
Im not much of a fan of Zuccarello, but I think he'd be a better short-term option than a lot of younger guys on that list like Kreider, Miller, Fast, Lindberg, etc.
That said, who knows whats going to happen? Glen Sather doesnt know, so we certainly dont know.

There seems to be a disconnect with people here between the idea of "can play at the NHL level" and "should play at the NHL level." Heading into the season we heard a lot of people ready to pencil-in JT Miller as the Rangers #3 center. He might be able to to be a third line center. But should he? I see no reason to pencil in Fast, Lindberg or even Miller into next years' lineup. Because maybe they shouldn't be in the NHL even if they could be.
The only guy I'm miffed by has been Kreider. I thought he would step in this year and be fine. I'm basing that on it seeming as if he had no problem historically stepping up to the next level (H.S. --> NCAA, NCAA --> WC, etc).
You've addressed one of my huge pet peeves around here, which is penciling young prospects into the Rangers lineup with little to no regard to if they're actually ready. Its disrespectful and/or ignorant to the development process of young hockey players. JT Miller is a perfect example - there were plenty of people wanting a 19 year old drafted late in the 1st round to be a top 9 NHL center. Well, they got it for a couple of months, and I hope they learned their lesson (although I doubt it).
Agreed on Kreider too. I think that problem is mostly in his head, which is both good and bad.

And there's a difference between and "NHL Player" and a "Player Who Has Played in the NHL". I think I had a few arguments (shocking, I know) with posters here (can't remember who) about whether or not Thomas Pock was an NHL Player. I said no, but I was told he was because he played in NHL games.
