I had a feeling that MacT was having more success at home and the numbers definitely kinda confirm that

As heusy is tracking, Mac is currently 5th all-time in points by a rookie in franchise history, and he'll wind up 3rd behind Zegras and Ryan. In terms of points per game it's a little less impressive, but still great - he's at .61, tied with Kunitz and below guys like Ebbett and Getz.

Mac is doing this in his D+2 season. Getz and Z's official rookie season were in their D+3 season. (Z's 24 NHL games in his D+2 season doesn't count as an official rookie season.) Ryan's official rookie season was his D+4 season. Kunie was an UDFA, but his draft year probably was probably in 1999 and his official rookie season was 2005-06 as a 26 year old.

Mac had no option to go to the AHL for his D+2 season. It was NHL or back to juniors. A year difference made a huge jump in Zegras' offense.

Stephens' latest article is on McTavish: Ducks' Mason McTavish playing like a foundational piece

Here's a couple of excerpts:

Eakins on McTavish:
“The plan going into this year was we’re just going to play him on the wing. But because of his improvement, because of his investment in his game, we were able to move him to center because he was ready for it. And he’s getting better and better there. It’s interesting with these kids. I often forget that he could still be playing junior right now.”

I didn't realize that org wanted to keep McTavish on wing all season. What a scary revelation! I mentioned before we drafted McTavish that his ceiling might be higher than we all might think b/c of how much he improved over one summer.

Terry on McTavish:
“It’s a hard league,” Terry said. “Very few people can just come in and figure it out. He’s light years ahead of most guys that come in. And the growth he’s had since the start in all areas. Not just scoring. It’s holding onto pucks down low and using his body to protect it. Defensively, he’s always in the right areas. Just all the little things with him is what stands out the most.
“You see why he was such a high pick. You see his offensive talent. That’s what took me so long is, when you get the puck in those scoring areas, just to have that confidence. You can see it. When we see him get the puck around the net, we feel pretty good about it.”

That's some great praise of McTavish by Terry and gives us some perspective on McTavish's scoring prowess.

Yeah, I had forgot he could be in juniors right now (which is why he cannot be sent to San Diego - not that it was ever needed).
Pretty good to cheer for him to reach 50 points now.

I'm just giddy to see what McTavish does next season. Zegras took a jump in production in second season (his official rookie season). We know McTavish will put in a lot of work knowing what to expect now playing at the NHL level.

  • McTavish's Draft year to present
    • D+0 season: Improved play moved his projection from late first/early 2nd round pick to #3 pick.
    • D+1 season: WJC-20 Team Canada captain, won WJC-20 gold, most points in WJC-20, and WJC-20 MVP. Youngest Gulls to score a goal (AHL). Youngest Ducks to score a goal (NHL). Won OHL championship and finished 2nd in Memorial cup.
    • D+2 season: Started the season as a 19-year old. Was projected to play wing all season (per Eakins via Athletic article cited post above), transitioned to 4th line center because he proved he was good enough to play center, and finally a top-6 center. Currently has 40 points in 66 games, a 0.61 ppg rate, and second in rookie scoring.

I'm just happy that most on here are finally seeing what I envisioned when I was hoping we'd draft McTavish #3 overall. McTavish needs to shoot more next year to utilize his biggest weapon along with other things he'll improve upon.

I’m also excited to see where Mac can go. He is off to a very good start, and would love for him to hit 50 points, but will need some big games down the stretch since we are running out of runway now.

In the goal prediction thread for McTavish, I hoped he would get 45 points IIRC. He's close!

As for his recent point scoring pattern in the past few games is he scores and doesn't score the next game. Let's hope he keeps that pattern. Sometimes, he has multi-point games. I think he's running on fumes, but he's still able to a few things in games that gets him the board. Last night, he didn't get on the board, but he was instrumental in Jones' goal by attacking the net right off the bat and creating chaos for the goalie to not see Jones shooting.

We are playing home and against lesser competition I believe. So it's an opportunity. 50 points is very good production for a 2nd liner vet. For a rookie, and on this team, is excellent. I hope he can get there, or at least close to it.

Yup.

He over-exceeded the expectations set by the org and majority of fans on here. I wanted McTavish to be playing and training at center to start the season with Rico as his mentor. Because he didn't have a proper summer conflated with a longer hockey season after a minuscule sample due to COVID, McTavish hit that rookie wall halfway through the season. And yet, he still manages to produce on the ice with and without getting on the scoreboard. With more strength, training, skating improvement, and experience, Mac could be more effective for most of the game in the near future. Well, that's my hope.
