Value of: Mason McTavish to Montreal

You want to acquire one the league's premier young players but you don't want to move your precious top prospects? I'm afraid that's not how things work.

I understand where you're going, McTavish might not have the flashy offensive talent Demidov has, but he's a center and has physical tools to be a force to reckon with, theoretically, in the playoffs.

But at the end of the day, I do not think Demidov would be tossed by Habs management for McTavish.

I think habs management and Habs fans would prefer to stay put than to sacrifice Demidov for McTavish.

The other way around, you'd do it?

No offense but I actually think that by next year at the same date Demidov alone will hold more value than McTavish.

I've watched every game Demidov has played over the last two season and I really think he'll be a very good player in the NHL.

In fact, I think that Demidov has consistent 90-100 pt/season potential if he develops well.

McTavish is also tremendously talented in his own regard and I fully understand why Anaheim would not want to trade him for anything but an overpayment. I frankly don't think there is much chance that the Canadiens and Ducks would make good trade partners on this.

But again, I just think Demidov is currently projecting to be the better player of the two so it would be a mistaken on the Canadiens' part to trade him for McTavish.
I’d bank on Demidov being a better scorer. As far as winning intangibles I think I’d go with McTavish. As of right now who really knows though.

I might be wrong, but I think Anaheim's primary need would be a young top 2 RHD.

They're set at others premium structuring positions, centers and LHD. But a bit light in terms of RHD.

McTavish is a GMs/coaches wet dream, a power center with talent.

He'd cost an arm and a leg and then some...

They'll keep him for sure but just for the sake of it, I'd say they ask Reinbacher, Hage and one of MTL 2025 1st (and maybe some more?)

Or Demidov+
You're right, until they trade McTavish then their #1 need is a top 6 center lol.

This is the problem. If the Ducks trade McTavish they will be in the same situation half the league is in. They are blessed with 2 big U23 top 6 centers. No need to blow that up.

Montreal is always trying to Poach from Anaheim. They tried to get Anaheims 2023 #2 overall pick, I think they tried again in 2024 for #3 and fans always offering the players they know are meh & could live without in trades such as Mailoux and in the past Poehling.

I agree, that's why I mentioned that the Ducks will keep him for sure.

They might even be in a position to draft Brady Martin.

They then would have one of the strongest and toughest to play against center line in the NHL.

That is the rumour of last year's draft. Nothing to do with the current context and I think it is very unlikely that MTL revisit Zegras as a potential trade target. That said, Maillloux made amends, went through several hoops to get clear to play, including getting some sort of blessing from the victim. So this narrative about his pass shouldn't be a factor.

McTavish is addressing a key area for MTL, thus the number of fan targeting him, but as many non-hab fans have said why would ANA trade him? Completely understand that, in this context, it would take an overpayment, which is not something that will happen. There is no "realistic" deal to be negotiated on this board.
San Jose been rumored to move their pick.

Not sure about that. He loves the grit.
He doesn't make stupid trades that give up young talent for meh return.
If its a trade like damaged goods mediocre hockey sense Drysdale for Cutter Gauthier he'll do it.
It was previous GM Bob Murray who gave away Theodore, Montour, Petterson(Dman) for Meh returns.

The Lindholm trade was meh but Verbeek was trading a guy who had only 1 year left til UFA, he isn't gonna trade McTavish for #16 & #17 in a horrible draft class + scraps. He lost the Fowler trade but guy was in his 30s and was blocking younger players and needed a change of scenery.

Is very nice center cor3

I’m not even sure Demidov gets it done

If we wanted Demidov we woulda just taken him over sennecke…. I don’t think it would be a great look passing on him and then trying to trade part of our potential 2 headed monster at center for him a year later

To be fair Demidov had an excellent D+1. He is deservedly considered one of the best prospects in hockey.

But also to be fair, McTavish really broke out later in the year, and spent much of the 2nd half around a point per game. The list of young C's with a higher ceiling and more potential is short.

Post 4 Nations until the end of the season, the list of Cs who were 22 or younger to start the season, with higher pts/60 than McTavish:

Carlsson

That's the entire list. No Johnston, no Cooley, no Stutzle, no Fantilli, no Celebrini, no Jarvis, etc.. He finished the season REALLY strong.

Bruins interested, what would it take for them to land McTavish?

prob better to ask on zegras…..

don’t really see scenarios where we’d consider moving mctavish. I think he’s seen as a core piece in Anaheim and he should be

PV constantly talks about strength down the middle of the ice… and right now we’re building that.

Wasn’t meant as a shot at Demidov…. He’s going to be good l.

Montreal wouldn’t offer him for mctavish, but that’s what it would take realistically to get our attention.

If wanted Zegras, I would have asked, Bruins have no need for that player.

Well he’d be the most likely available potential center.

Mctavish isn’t available and seen as a core piece in Anaheim…. I also don’t think bruins realistically have anything that would make me consider moving him.

Just don’t see Anaheim moving McTavish in any case. Just hired Quennville and they are going to make a push to win. So prospects and draft picks don’t do much for them.
yep just keep building around Leo + mctavish up front

New system, possibly capable powerplay…. Both guys could have pretty nice bump in production this year
