Marty vs Cory Part II (Mod Warning Post 1)

If he was actually bad, like some suggest, he would be winning at Cory's rate and we would have 10 points less in the stands, if not more.

That's not how it works. You don't just get automatic wins for being good and automatic losses for being bad. Or are you seriously implying Marc-Andre Fleury is actually the best goalie in the league right now?

A goalie can play a poor game and still win, if his team plays well enough.
A goalie can play a great game and still lose, if his team plays poor enough.

I fail to see what's so hard to understand.

Come on, Ray Emery was definitely a top 10 goalie in the league last year!

Marty could probably start or be 1a/b for the Islanders or Oilers. I don't think the rotting corpse of Nabokov is better than Marty, and he certainly seems to be getting injured a lot lately. Marty would probably get torched playing behind both of those garbage teams though.

speculation -

please strike that from the record.... :-)

edit: you'll also have to stop using your 'Marty gets a goal more a game' stat after last night. It is now less than 1g difference. See how fickle the hallowed stats can be?

Of course, but it's not like we won those 13 games despite Marty. If anything the team cost Marty a few wins rather than the other way around.

It's not how you start the race it is how you finish.

True but people act like we were bottom 5 during an 82 game season. We were top 4, top in east & nosedived when Marty got injured and kept burning when he came back. If it was 82 games we probably could have salvaged the season.

How is it speculation? That's not a shot at Marty. It's a shot at how incredibly putrid both of those teams are at defense. It's non existent up in Edmonton, and barely existent on Long Island. Any goalie in the league would get torched up there.
Because of his 1.94 GAA and .922 SV%, right? That makes him better than Cory Schneider since the stats say so.
That was one season. If you look at Ray Emery's save percentage and GAA since 2007 it's the WORST in the league. It's continuing to look that way into this year. 2013 was the only exception, and it's looking like Ray Emery really is as bad as he was from 07-12.

Schneider has put up a save percentage of about the same over the last 3 years as what he has right now. Ray Emery was only good for one year out of the last 6 or 7. And BG you yourself basically admitted Cory should play more, so why are you talking about goal support now? Goal support (as evidenced by last night) has very little to do with a goalie.

That two letter word "if"

That two letter word "if"

Yeah but this time, using "if" isn't a stretch. 48 game season isn't normal. We could have kept nosediving, but probably would have climbed out of the hole as a 7-8 seed eventually. The short season killed us. This season is an entirely different animal, though it may feel like a continuation, its really not.

We are starting to play better so let's wish for a 108 game season.

The season was 48 games and we failed to make the playoffs, period. Any thoughts beyond that are pure speculation and unsupported.

Calgary
Carolina 1a or 1b
Edmonton
Florida
Minnesota is tough to suss with Harding and Backstrom in and out of the lineup
Isles
Rangers :naughty:
Sens
Flyers
Pens 1b? when MAF melts down
After last night STL?
Caps
Toronto 1c
Winnipeg

8-12 teams.

If you are talking as a rental when they got to the playoffs, possibly more.

Aight so he's not really an option in NY Stl, or Pitt. He could be the injury fill in in Minny. And then you have the worst teams in the league.

The list of teams is putrid.

Still about 1/3rd of the league would take him in a heartbeat.

but it's the third of the league that is in the toilet. And I'm not even sure they'd all be hot to take him on. Aside from the novelty of it, why would Edm or Calgary want Brodeur?

no one is arguing that teams would take him

they are arguing what teams would take him and RELY on to start and be the #1? and I am not talking about the publicity stunt aspect of it.

In the Metro alone probably Caps, Isles.... & Pens would let him split

He would not split reg season minutes with MAF. Maybe they'd be interested in letting him hang around as an insurance policy come playoffs, but splitting time in the reg? Don't see it.

And Isles and Caps are both below us in the standings. These are not good teams.

So we consider ourselves a crap team, but Marty starting on other crap teams doesn't count... How does that work?

and yet if you add Nash (without Rinne) and the NJ Devils, you actually get close to one half of the teams in the league - so...

lol. Caps below us by one, after being above us all season long.

Isles one of the hottest teams in the league.
