Yeah I guess we can look all over the place and still not find a team that made the playoffs in 8 consecutive years, only to some out of it having won exactly 1 game past the 1st round. What a disgrace. And some people still worship these "all time Leaf greats". SMH.
The thing is, when people make comparisons to other teams who disappointed in the playoffs, before finally putting it together and winning or at least going to the finals as justification on why these guys will figure it out it's a completely ridiculous comparison.

The 2 teams most trotted out are the Ovy caps and the Jumbo Sharks. Those teams may have "disappointed" but it doesn't even compare. Thise teams won rounds regularly and lost in the 2nd or 3rd round before making the finals. It took a fluke/miracle for us to get 5 wins, which we did once.

Not to mention the fact we don't even have the regular season success. The Caps/Sharks had President's Trophy's, and a bunch of division titles. We can't even come within shouting distance of an Atlantic Division title let alone a President's trophy.

It was 4 in a row at one point.

The comparison came more from the narrative surrounding the team.

Not mentally tough enough to win. No killer instinct, etc.
I’ll have to watch the documentary. On a related note, the documentary on New England Patriots was really good. Even if you’re Pats hater it was pretty entertaining.

4 in a row, that's pretty bad. At the same time, I don't really follow MLB any more but even getting to the playoffs is harder than it is in hockey, and 4 years is still less than our record of futility.

Baseball's harder to predict than hockey too I think but whatever, the fact that you're even looking at other sports to find compareables shows just how bad we've been.

Interesting assumptions - any supporting evidence?

None at all but that would be part of it. The numbers are just random but if you have a big name player that sells a lot of jerseys, gets a lot searches and generates a lot of page hits. They are 100% quantifying that.

Perhaps, Nylander is putting the puck in the net, something Matthews hasn't been doing.
Some more Willy goals could prop up some participation assists for Marner to inflate his personal stats.

Willy just one goal off the league lead with 9 compared to Mitch's 2 goals.

Without Matthews we will need more goals than assists to WIN.

This situation is identical to the boston playoffs series , 6 months ago, Matthew's appears to be checked out mentally, disengaged, then misses games after media and online talk gets louder about his performance. Lets see when he returns and what he does after he returns. When he missed games in the Boston series, he wouldnt tell media why. Just weird vibes around Matthews, his consistency, his contract demands, his total performance etc.

I agree with the concept - just wondering about the numbers.
