Marner is the better overall player. He's better defensively and plays on the PK.

But he can be flat out ineffective in tight games whereas Nylander has the types of attributes that can make a difference in such games (I wish he would use them more often, though). Both guys have some soft tendencies and neither is much of a grinder, but when Nylander tries, he can shield the puck, drive to the net and manufacture goals in ways Marner simply can't. However, Marner is generally more aware and involved defensively.

I've watched both for a decade.

Marner most times. Two way play and overall talent level easily him.

Nylander when the intensity is high. That is not just playoffs. That is when the arena is bumping and people are going nuts, Nylander always seems to be the guy who thrives in that shit. Marner (and Matthews) shrink most times

I’d prefer Marner because if I were team building I think I would win more with Marner and some version of a discount nylander than if I did it the other way around. I think if you have some 60% version of Marner you get a ton of turnovers, you stop elevating the play of the rest of the group, but if you have a 60% version of nylander you still probably get 20-25 goals.

I don't see one as clearly better, they both have their moments but they're both flawed players

This is true but Nylander is really good at floating defensively all game then looking like a hero coming up with a huge goal.

Marner typically plays against the better defensive units IIRC.

Nylander has a bit of that Martin Havlat role in Ottawa where he plays a fair amount on the 3rd line and feasts on weaker opposition.

I mean this argument goes both ways, Marner also gets to play with far superior linemates 99% of the time, while Nylander has to carry a declining Tavares and whatever 3rd/4th liner plug they decide to put on LW.

True, but Nylander has a lot of individual skill (much like Havlat) which lends itself to playing against weaker opposition.

Nylander gets a lot more rope too (and rightly so) because his salary isn't in the same range.

If they swapped salaries, all of a sudden, the scrutiny is a little more direct in the other direction.

It's an interesting poll. They are differently valuable to some extent.
