Some of the numbers on here are absolutely nuts. No one know what they are talking about.

Name ONE pure playmaker in the NHL that gets paid like what you all are saying Marner should get?

Nicklas Bäckström got paid 11.28% of the cap. Based on an 83M cap thats 9.3624M.

Add inflation of 2%-3% this year and next year and still you are looking at a number around 9.5M.

That is Marners MAX, if he were to be an ELITE playmaking C. Which he is not. Marner is a winger.

NOTHING in the history of the salary cap or this sport points to a player like Marner making BIG MONEY.
Kane says hello.

So you're willing to let go one of the best players in the NHL because his agent has a big mouth?

No, because his agent is obviously putting the screws to my team in a very public way. And yes, if it comes to trading one of the better young players in the league then that's what happens. Team before individual. Again, I want him on this team, but on our terms and certainly not on a 3yr term.

So let me get this right, you want to trade our best/2nd best player, because he wants to get paid as much as his closest internal comparables?

You're willing to give up on one of the best young players in the game, simply becasue he wants to get paid like it?

Matthews just signed at 11.634. There was NO discount there. Nylander just signed at 6.964. There was NO discount there. But when it's Marners turn, people now want him to take a discount??

Let me remind you, this is the Marner whom in his U22 season matched MATS SUNDIN'S HIGHEST POINT TOTAL for our franchise.
This is the Marner whom in his U22 seasonsexceeded ALL of the players in our team history in single season assists except for Doug Gilmour and Darryl Sittler.
This is the Marner whom in his U22 season was arguably our best PKing forward, and can be trusted in all situations

You want to trade Marner becuase he and his agent is asking for fair pay based on our internal comparables?

You want to trade THIS Mitch Marner??

This is crazy talk!

His agent also never shit in Mathews like he claims. He said that Mathews just sign the best contract in the NHL and that is pure fact. Dubas should have sat both Marner and Mathews in a room and said let’s sign both of you for 21m how do you want to split it up? Dubas rushed to sign Mathews and while signing him was throw shots at Marner inflaming the situation. Dubas has been nothing but horrible during contract negotiations and that needs to change.

Marner will get signed and it will be for at least 10m and no more then 6 years.

Dubas made his bed now he is going to have to lie in it!

We over paid Mathews for his term and it will cost us again when we sign our best player.

I didn't like the term on Matthews, but I like him as a better player (now and in the future). I'm fine with Nylander, and again was hoping for a larger term. One thing I like though? It was quiet. All this BS about Nylanders dad and not once did he come out complaining to the media. Who has? Mitch's Dad, Mitch's agent (not the first set of issues with either one). If he wants 9m or so over 5yrs, sure I get it (11% of a 83m cap - just like Kane did) a fair price comparable to Nylander and Matthews - slots in where he does on this team (behind JT and Matthews). Again, some of the rumoured numbers, like 10m over 3yrs, I don't agree with and wouldn't pay for that term.

Thats not fair at all compared to Nylander. Marner just produced 154% higher than Nylander's career high. Don't you think he's worth quite a bit more than 2M when compared to Willy?

Marner outproduced Matthews this year by quite a bit. Don't you think he's significantly closer to Matthews than Nylander?

Again, this is the Marner whom in his U22 season reached numbers this season that only a handful have done in our team's history.

The problem is Marner was always going to want slightly less than Matthews, so the Matthews overpayment is going to cause a Marner overpayment.

Nylander signed the deal when his point totals were comparable to Marner. Nylander had a brutal year, no bones about it. I think he rebounds and if given the opportunity next to Matthews should break 80pts (both healthy).

Marner waited and deserves a raise. Just depends on the term I guess. Like I said, I'd pay him closer to what Kane got over a 5yr term which I think is very fair.

Ultimately, you obviously feel very differently than I do regarding this and that's fine - he's a great talent and we are arguing over a million or two gap over a specific term. The cloud surrounding him has just soured things for me too much.

Dubas came out and said it.

The market has already dictated what the players are worth. It’s just working around the edges of that.

And so far. He has done that. High end of edges. But edges.

Let’s see if it continues with Marner.

Am I missing something? You think he’s walk for nothing?. $10m is too much for a winger and by accounts he wants $11m!.

I’ll take the dman+ we could probably get for him over those prices under $10m marner easily keep.

10M is not too much for a winger, especially not one of Marner's ilk IMO.

It is when you have 2 c’s already above that. No team has 3 forwards above $10m if given the choice of 2 Jt and matthews are easily the choice

People dismiss total points on here as it is convenient to do. However the highest paid player in the nhl has vastly more assists then goals. His line mate scored 50 this year. If JT was a able to carry the mail better Marner would have had more goals. Marner like Connor increased his line mates goal totals. Hyman has more goals then assist as did JT. Both had the goal total increased substantially this year. Hyman in less games this year scored 6 more goals.

Marner drives this line the proof is in the stats.

I disagree. Also, U22 Marner > U29 Tavares.

The new age of the NHL is being paid off of potential, not being paid for what you were worth the past season.

Marner should get a shit ton of money, but just keep the above in mind when you're looking at contracts such as Matthews, Nylander, Eichel, and the other upcoming contracts for young Fs. The organization expects these players to put a shit ton of points, and thus they're paid ahead of time.

Love him. I'd like to see a few more goals before paying someone $11M.

I disagree. Also, U22 Marner > U29 Tavares.

Oh so you want to trade the biggest ufa in leaf history 1 year after signing? No it’s between matthews and marner and matthews is the choice i pick every day of the week.

Anyway let’s hope it doesn’t come to it and marner signs under $10m. $10m-$10.5m wouldn’t be great but can live with it anymore and no thanks

I didn't say that. Where did I say I want to trade Tavares?
