What an exhausting media circus this has turned out to be. Narratives:
  • Marner has never been treated as well as Matthews by management or fans
  • Teams are lining up to offersheet him
  • A three year deal is in the best interests of the team
  • Marner is meeting with other teams
  • Marner will be practicing and potentially playing in Europe if it comes to it
  • The captaincy likely not being given to Mitch is increasing his asking price?
  • I don't care, pay me like Matthews
  • Signing bonuses are being held over Dubas' head
  • Signing Tavares was disrespectful to Mitch
Anything else?

Also, it takes a special kind of..... well something, to be pissed over a bonus level that you only qualified to get in 1 of your 3 entry level years anyway. His performance wasn't good enough to get them, even if they were in his contract, until last year, after he got to play with Tavares.

Maybe that's why Lou didn't feel the need to include it there Mitchell.

These numbers help to illustrate why it is so difficult to see a path to a Mitch Marner contract settlement any time soon.

The Leafs have been persistent in pushing both a 7 yr and 8 yr extension at Marner. The $11 mil per offer was made in June and included the $1.6 mil in B bonuses Toronto wouldn’t pay Marner in his entry level contract. 3 yr ext remains the focus.

TOR has made seven and eight year offers in the $11M AAV universe but because it’s a lower AAV and longer term than Auston Matthews, it hasn’t been palatable to Marner.

The logical solution would be a three-year bridge but because Marner wants an AAV in the $9M to $10M universe and the third year (base for QO) would be substantially higher, TOR has no incentive to do the bridge at those numbers. Hard to see the way to a settlement...

...unless one side or the other makes a seismic shift.

The ask is so ridiculous. He wants to be the highest paid winger in history after one PPG season and a UFA in 3 years.

This is all about some weird rivalry with Matthews and needing the same contract. Nevermind the fact that Matthews scores 40 goals and plays a more demanding position.

Time to trade Paul and Mitch.

If he is turning down overpayments already I don't see how he becomes a leaf without signing a big overpayment.

However only time will tell

Unless dubs can find more cap space he cant overpay as much as marner demand him to. Look for a trade already.

11x7 seems a bit too long of a term.....why not 11x5 and get it over with.

Could be the big three want Nylander squeezed out. They were in the room with him and saw his performance and effort in the playoffs. Would not surprise me.
We saw Mitch's too. Other than those 2 blocks.....or 1.5 seconds of effort, basically he was invisible the last 5 games.

They all saw that too.

Which is why this take doesn't fly

Marner is better than JT. Considerably better moving forward. He is our 2nd best player (if Matthews stays healthy and finds chemistry with Nylander again). Just b/c AM is better than MM doesnt mean we gotta tear down Marner. Marner was trending towards being an elite player since 2018 when he placed for 90 points in a 40ish game sample with kadri and Marleau.

whatever helps you sleep at night.

I'm not buying any of these ridiculous offers being bandied about. pure speculation at best. "IF" these reasonable offers were made and Marner's camp rejected he MM wouldn't play another game in the NHL again. There would be so much collusion behind the scenes between other Gm's and Owners it would make your head spin.
The rationale being, if the Leafs can be held hostage to this outrage, so can we. The owners are not idiots, they didn't get to where they are without merit and are extreme egomaniacs in their own right. Jeremy Jacobs in Boston is laughing his ass off, would never happen in Boston. As stated with my opinion on the Boston model, they don't care if you sit or get traded...........the player does not run our team!

Turning down 77 in dollars to play for your home town is insane, and anyone still acting like the Marner camp is being anything other than utterly unreasonable has lost the plot.

The team needs to seriously and aggressively look at the trade option at this point, and hope.before that comes Marner regains his sanity

id take Laine + for Marner, if
A: we know for sure he isn't a headcase (due diligence)
B: we find out his demands and are obviously lower than Marner ($8.5-9.5M)
C: the + was reasonably high quality

BUT we would then have an imbalance of pure shooters in our forward group too which is something to consider JT, Matthews and Laine with only Nylander and maybe in the near future bracco as elite playmakers

Tavares can play the set up role.

He can by reducing the term. I feel like the leafs can fit close to 11 million right now if they activate their LTIR. I worry we may end up at close to 11 for like 5 years.

There is no evidence that he is turning down overpayments. There is speculation that he is turning down relatively fair contracts for his worth, when he has no real reason to sign yet.

Dubas, it's not working man. I really feel he needs to pull a Shero. Maybe he can't come out and say it directly due to the media here, but he needs to leak something big. Say that they have done their best and Marner is being unreasonable, and right now they are looking for any trades for Marner, but also for trades to improve the team, as they are going to let him sit until his demands become reasonable.

What is Marner going to do? He's going to come down on his bridge deal to make something work for the Leafs, so he doesn't lose all his money, knowing he can try again with arb rights in a few years. Dubas should immediately start shopping him at that point.
Dubas just did leak something big , he leaked an excuse for his fan club to use when he caves again .

can't wait to see Dubie's boi's spinning how his 11.6 x 6 is really under 10m per because the rest is the bonus money he got cheated on by LL

Please tell me you are joking. Hard pass if not.

Josh Anderson’s agent, Darren Ferris, denies report from Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos that Anderson is unhappy w #CBJ after temporary drop to fourth line.
Ferris said he spoke w Anderson, and both see demotion as nothing more than “a coach trying to get a team and a player going.”

Because that's an incredibly large amount of money for a winger and not a lot of term for it. It's a stupid contract. That is how you end up with problems later.
