He is allowed to enforce his NTC. The odd thing is that he wants to stay in Toronto but many fans will resent him for not waiving

He will effectively be a ufa and choosing wherever he wants if stl and Toronto do a sign and trade. Every team will be calling Toronto and Marner will be able to make a decision. There’s a reason to do this before July 1:

We could attempt to sign him as a free agent past July 1st but - we can’t kinda - Kyrou kinda fills the slot Marner would fill, Marner doesn’t really work with our cap so long as we have 2 other 8 million dollar wingers. Many suitors will be in a similar position: The expiring contracts this year are paltry. There isn’t a ton of top 6 churn this offseason. It will be somewhat difficult for Marner to get what he wants if the number of teams that can fit him is small. There is always a cost to make room. A hockey trade opens the room for the deal in an efficient manner. We’d need to open the space for Marner to be installed into the depth chart.
He would have to choose free agency for that. He has earned the right to choose free agency.

I wonder if the issue wasn't just the NTC but that he didn't want to sign an 8 year extension with Dallas. Maybe he wants that free agent experience
It would have been with Carolina. He might want to choose free agency. He will have earned the right on July 1.

Marner gone. No Rantanen. Nylander looking forward to 25 minutes a game and rest when he should back check. Win win

If he does go. Toronto will clearly spend the money.

they will have 27.5 to spend with

——- Matthews. Nylander
Mcman. ————- ————
Domi. Laughton. ———
Jarnkrok. Kampf. Reeves.

McCabe. Tanev
Rielly. Carlo
Oel. Myers
Benoit.

Stolarz
Woll.

They have Robertson/cowan/holmberg to fit in the bottom 6
Giving you 25 million for 3 forwards.

Ehlers/boeser/Nelson/duchene hitting the market.

May even keep their powder dry for McDavid .

Marner will remember that the team tried to trade him.

He is not about to uproot his life on a whim for 2 months. Of course he blocked it I don't blame him.

He will weigh his options in the summer when it is a more appropriate time to move and talk it over with his wife and where they might want to raise a kid that is on the way. Likely isn't gonna feel the love from a program who just tried to trade him.

You give 9 years to a program, and they try to trade you while the group is in the thick of things. That is the thanks he gets.

He will do what he wants.

Over the last 5 years Marner has more points than:

Nikita Kucherov, Auston Matthews, Sidney Crosby, and Matt Tkachuk and then 99% of nhlers too. He’s 7th out of ~2,100 total players over the 5 years. He's in the 1% of the 1%.

If your opinion is that he is overpaid or didn’t live up to his deal….my opinion about that would be it’s time to recalibrate expectations.

He’s worth whatever a team can afford in terms of cap structure. The cap will prevent him from being overpaid. Nobody else gets him on their team when he’s on yours. That’s what you’re paying for too. If you don’t want to spend what he costs; you can always downgrade and settle for less, 31 teams will be doing this, many against their will.
No Leafs fan with a brain gives a shit ahout his performance in the regular season anymore and nor should anyone else.

He could outscore f***ing McDavid and it wouldn't mean shit until he steps it up in the real season where big boys play. At no point has he done that for an extended period of time. Never. Neither have Matthews or Nylander either but they've already been extended for better or worse.

They can move on from Mitch in July and unless he miraculously becomes a playoff God all of a sudden that is EXACTLY what they should do. Changing the culture takes precedence over all other factors. The culture is complacency. Cowardice. Failure. Style over substance. We have had enough of it.

Maybe if he weren't awful to deal with at the negotiation table and he didn't play scared in the playoffs we wouldn't be so aggravated with him?
