I am not a Marner fan at this point but he has been much better away from Matthews no matter what the nonsense stat of expected goals claims.
My god just watch the games and leave the nonsense stats to Xbox
He defers to Matthews when together.
With Tavares and Bert he knows he has to do it himself and becomes more of a shooter than passer.

Mitch and Matty have been amazing lately. Impressive they are closing in on Willie, who has been Mr. Consistency this year. Mitch being 2 goals behind Willie is impressive.

In goals yes, but not much in points.
Last 8 Leafs games, Matty and Mitch have 14 points and Willy has 13. Last five games each, Matty and Willy have 10 each and Mitch has 9.

Crazy impressive from all three (JT with 7 in his last five ain't too shabby either).

Stats don’t tell the whole story if you think that

Stats don't tell the whole story, but...
AI is going to be very handy for breaking down game stats. Imagine the ways you can dissect and interpret in seconds. Actually in time AI will be able to advise when a player is off his game before he or the coach knows it. Add some sensors in there, maybe monitor the brain for focus.

Anyways that's frightening level stuff but where this all headed. Sidetracked.

At least writers are being objective on Marner this season, because his fans certainly won't. He has not had a good year. I know points but that doesn't reflect the truth. He'll get his points. Playing passenger beside Matthews automatically gets him points. He's been carried by his linemates this season. He also gets unearned ice time so that will get him on the score sheet too.

My theory with Marner is he tries to bulk up in the off-season and it slows him down for the first 33% of the year. By the 34th% (lol) he's finally back to his normal weight and starts flying again.

I mean, it's literally happening again. He has the puck on a string these past few games. Over the last month Leafs have been a top team again in possession and scoring chances which makes sense when you watch Marner and Nylander.

The only shame in all this is the wins we threw away through the goalies.

The Leafs need to admit to themselves Marner is not physically blessed like Matthews, Nylander and Tavares. Stop burning him out and stop using all his playoff energy he has left on the penalty kill. Let him focus on putting up points and driving offence.

Getting his cap back will give you 2 minutes of joy, then it will dawn on you that no combo of non-superstar players add up to Marner.

It cost peanuts to shore up the bottom pairing with Benoit. We will always be able to have a Bertuzzi or 2 to insulate the core (hopefully under 30 years old). We haven't had good goaltending since healthy Andersen. You guys aren't looking in the right areas to secure a Cup.

Dubas tried and failed 5 consecutive years and our goaltending and D are worse this year. Not as easy as it appears in practice. It is now Tre's turn and some days we look like world beaters and others we look like we can't beat an AHL team.

Oh, the same writers that nominated him for the Selke last year, and a first and second team NHL season end all star, while insecure posters like your self were slagging him still? Those guys? Now they’re right? Look at your avatar, you’re still obsessed with partisan garbage about a guy who left SIX years ago. Man.

I think a lot of Leaf fans don't know what a good hockey player looks like because they've been subjected to garbage their whole lives. Either that or they are stupid. Hard to say.
Nobody would say Marner isn’t a good hockey player, he is super talented. However, he lacks high end speed and overall quickness and when the game tightens up he is neutralized. Willy has that strength and explosiveness that allows him to fight through that.

No one argues if Mitch is a good player. He's a star and one of the better wingers in the game, but he has deserved criticism for his performance in the playoffs. Some of his fans just seem to think he isn't allowed to be criticized which is kind of wierd.

It's a disservice to the player that Marner has been and should be to pretend this version of him is good enough. He's capable of so much more, we've all seen it
