Re Abruzzese: I think a Harvard degree is worth a great deal, both in financial and non financial terms. I can see him wanting to have that in reach before he goes pro. This could be especially the case for a player who is by no means a sure thing to make the NHL.

If Abruzzese doesn't go pro at the end of this season with Harvard, I have a hard time getting excited about him. He's 2 and 3 years older than most of the high end prospects on Harvard this year.

It's usually best to take an out of sight out of mind approach with prospects at that level. If they pop great, but if not that wasn't exactly much more than a darkhorse with some unique attributes anyway.

What's the word on Amirov? Is he healthy yet?

Every time I watch a Knies highlight I'm baffled how this guy wasn't a 1st rounder. A lot of our other prospects who seem to develop better than their draft position like Robertson, Niemela, Abbruzzese, etc. have had potential size concerns which may have turned off some teams, but Knies is big!

He put up 0.95PPG in the USHL last year.

Coronato, who went 13th OA, went 1.67 PGG in the USHL.
Doan, who went 37th OA, went 1.32 PPG in the USHL.

yeah it's weird that he was actually above PPG the year before in the USHL, then dropped a bit in his draft year. Wonder if his injuries played a role that season given his prior production and how good he looks now.

almost definitely. He was dominant in his D-1 season, the end of his draft year, and now. The only blip is when he had covid/a concussion at the start of his draft year, so it seems like that was the reason. I would have thought his overall skillset would be too good to pass up even with his mediocre production anyway

I think I remember hearing that the reason he fell in the draft was because he had a 3 week stretch where he was playing terrible hockey.

For sure...as mentioned above, Covid, Concussion.. so he did drop. But his production when he returned was 1.16 PPG, which while good, doesn't compare to those drafted above him... of course it's probable that he wasn't at his best after Covid, and we've benefited.... Dubas does look for things other teams miss, and let's hope this kid continues to grow as a player. A kid his size, ability, aggressiveness, with good skating would be a great addition to this squad.

wasn't that Chicago Steel team widely viewed as one of, if not the best USHL teams ever?

not to discount what those kids did, they were a huge part of why they were so good. But imagine if Knies were on that team

all I know is in that one episode of Blueprint where a couple scouts step up when Dubas asks if he should trade the pick, and the one scout says " they feel strongly about this player, make the pick"

Thank you.

(around the 5:40 mark)

It also gives me complete confidence in this staff. They spoke up when it was clearly needed, and Dubas respected the call, and made the pick.

Great work all around

Holmberg assist. He now has 16 points 21 games this season after his MVP performance in the playoffs. There should be more hype around him now. Guy is really good. All he has done is improve every year and had the breakout in the playoffs. He has continued it on to the season.

I'm only seeing two really high impact players out of Tverberg and Knies but everyone else who are stand outs this year are making strong cases if they develop correctly. It's awesome to see the Leafs actually properly developing players now. It's a sight to behold.

Just a couple injury updates by Moore.
Scott is back practicing so sounds like he's pretty close to returning. Robertson is still weeks away than days.

Doan also was playing 1st line on the best team in the league beside the beside two of the best players in the league (Coronato/Samoskovich) and was a d+1. That pick reeked of nepotism.

this is probably not the right comparison but I get Andreas Johnson vibes from him.

There's probably only 1 or 2 guys in the pool that are going to be top-6 threats within the next 5 years but we have an obscenely healthy pipeline of guys who seem like sure bets at being competent middle-6/bottom-4 players on ELCs. I can't see us needing Ritchie-caliber UFA signings for a good 3 or 4 years once the 2019/2020 drafts start graduating consistently. Even if we traded Robertson + Amirov + Sandin/Liljegren at the deadline, the Kral/Niemela/Hirvonen/SDA/Abramov tier guys should produce some NHLers within a year or two.
