TORONTO MARLIES

With the AHL set to return in February. I'm curious how the marlies roster will look like

1. which players will come back from Europe?

- korshkov
- kossila
- malgin
- hallinder
- SDA
- rubins

2. Which players will be on the taxi squad and who will play for the marlies

- engvall
- Boyd
- Anderson
- Sandin
- liljgren
- marincin
- rosen
- dell
- Hutchinson

I think petan, brooks, Agostino, kivihalme, warsofky and hollowell will be on the marlies

3. Will the leafs/marlies sign any other players to fill out the roster is some of the European players don't come back?

I know Chartier and gaudet and some other players playing in the echl are on marlies contract

Kossila, Hollowell, and Rubins are back. Malgin is TBD. The others are not coming.

Engvall, Marincin, and one of the goalies won't be available. Rosen is TBD. The rest will be, or we will need to sign someone to replace them.

Wasn't Kossila placed on waives so he could remain with his team in Europe for the year?

He was put on waivers because he was not going to be in NHL camp and will stay in Europe until the AHL season opens, which is in about a month. Once the AHL season starts up, he should be back (unless plans change).

Just a little note. Tverberg is out of quarantine and has had 2 practices with uConn. Safe to say he makes his debut either tomorrow or pretty soon afterwards.
Hoping to be tomorrow. Good time because of the 1 day break from the world juniors.

I literally came here to question why it said he was to play for UConn in 2020-21. Him at that level already is great, and the de-commitment from Harvard makes sense now.

Hirvonen scores the game winning goal for Finland to eliminate Sweden.

First of the tournament came at the best time.

Sweden really struggles to put the pedal down when they need to. They were good for 10 minutes and went up 2-0 and then sucked the rest of the way, and lost 3-2. And it has been happening over and over again for like 15 years now.

Really like these Finn prospects what do their contracts in Liga look like when’s the earliest they can come over for the Marlies?

All of their contracts expire next year, so they likely can come over next year.

Most likely they do not come over all at once though. I expect Hirvonen and Niemela get another year in Finland. Rasanen may be available to come over next year. Rindell and Kokkonen may come over together next year, although it really depends on who else we have, because there is also Kral, Rubins, Kivihalme, Hoefenmayer, McCourt, Sapego, Greenway, etc. in that mix on LD. Only Hollowell and Duszak really on RD right now though, and the Leafs may move on from Duszak.

Not that anyone will watch it today, but Miettinen back in action in about 20 mins. 3rd line still

I agree with this. Hirvonen and Niemala should play one more year in Finland (at least). Rindell should come over net year. Kokkonen has been playing pro in Finland for an eternity so he should come over as well.

Rasanen probably doesn't deserve a chance but they spent a 2nd rounder on him so may as well get him over and see if the development staff can salvage him.

I'd bring him over on an AHL deal if he takes it, and I imagine he would. He can be the 4th RD on the Marlies.

A lot of that rides on how Kivihalme, Duszak, Hollowell, and Rubins do this year though. Only one of them (Hollowell/Duszak) will have any chance of being in the top 4 this year (behind Sandin, Liljegren, and Warsofsky), but next year they could end up effectively being the top 4. If they don't show they can handle large roles this year, and that they can be the veteran presences on the defense next year, a couple of them may be shipped out, just like they did with Harpur, Schmaltz, and Lindgren.

We have a lot of young and unproven options that will need to be insulated next year. Kokkonen and Kral should be able to handle themselves right away, but guys like Rindell, Rasanen, Greenway, Hoefenmayer, McCourt, Sapego, etc. may need more leeway. McCourt and Sapego should at least be on the Marlies this year and may be given a decent sized role (right now they are 8th and 9th, which likely means they will get something like 1/3 of the games this year unless we are unusually healthy).

I personally don't care much for Kivihalme or Duszak.

I don't either, but Kivihalme got a 2 year deal and Duszak will probably be given a decent opportunity this year. Duszak could just be non-tendered if he is not impressive enough, but if he puts up enough points we may keep him as an offensive defenseman for the PP.

We may trade one or both of them over the course of the year, or Kivihalme may even end up replacing Marincin/Rosen in the NHL as a depth defenseman.

Of all those guys my sleeper is Rubins. Moves well for his size.
I have a lot of time for Rubins and Hollowell from that group. Duszak is so bad defensively that I don't ever see an NHL future for him.

Kivihalme is a good AHL option but with all of the young defenceman we have coming, I'd rather see them get the minutes he would get.

man

it's kinda nuts how good our draft seems to have been in hindsight

despite not getting big guys, miettinen, hirvonen, amirov, niemela have been absolutely on fire and this doesn't usually happen across multiple rounds

Joe miller has 6 pts in 13 games now. For some reason, i looked at the drafting history of the leafs and stumbled across a familiar name, Cameranesi. Like 3 of our recent prospects, he was drafted out of high school and was a fast skater. He is also undersized. In his draft year+1, he managed 42 pts in 55 games. In his first year in college, he collected 34 pts in 38 games, which is impressive. He didn’t make it to the nhl, but his point totals will be fun to compare to our current ushl prospects and if one of fusco, miller, schingoethe make it, then it means our development staff did a great job.

miller was playing on a line with 2021 projected first round pick coronato, middendorf.
