The trade down for Niemela and Hirvonen was masterfully done. The thinking is sound and it was great to see Dubas not shy away from doing this again in this part of the 2020 draft given the lack of results from 2015. Hirvonen seems to be a smart, skillful pest and I don’t necessarily think he needs to fight just like how Leo Komarov never did.
Niemela is looking like a steal, regularly outplaying first round selections. Being a right shot defenseman doesn’t hurt either.
You mean like that first round right handed defenseman that half our fanbase wanted only because he was physical and shot right handed with not as much detail in the defensive zone and no special shot suppressing qualities and who just delivered an illegal hit to a poor german guy (who had to play more minutes as half his team had to quarantine)?

UConn returns from the holiday break on the 28th. Tverberg was supposed to join them as well. Wonder if he makes his debut that day as well.
Intriguing prospect. The talent analysis on him is interesting.
Small guy but highly skilled who likes to battle in the rough areas.
I'm curious about this pick since we made a trade to get back into the draft to select him. The scouting staff must have seen something special about him.

Noel Hoefenmayer scored on he's debut în the ECHL.. solid marlies signing imho

He has that "it" factor. Game breaking offensive ability. I don't think his skating is as bad as some of the other past/current projects like Nielsen/Brazeau and the time-off probably benefitted him more than rushing to play in a second tier European league. Curious to hear what @diceman934 thinks of his skating, outside of this clip.

Maybe a different environment helps him but he will have to play a lot better.

Barring a major improvement with Spartak, where he will have plenty of opportunities for playing time once again, then he is pretty much in Bobylev and Chebykin territory as a prospect.

We pissed away so many round 4-7 picks for that 3ish year stretch (not to mention earlier picks like Korshkov and Rasanen)... makes you wonder what our pipeline might look like right now if Dubas had been at the helm for those drafts.

Probably better, although I am not sure if 2016 and 2017 were all that great TBH.

I forgot we acquired a pick to get him. They must like him a fair amount. We'll ser

Agreed. I still like Kizimov who is also a huge long shot though.

He can fly. Should be able to crack the lineup early and be a factor if he is up to standards. UConn is not brimming with high end talent, so he should be one of their more talented forwards.

Schingoethe was not in the lineup for Waterloo today, so I wonder if he is heading to Denver early as well, or if he is sick/injured.
Yeah I'm excited to see Tverberg. We'll see though.
Yeah haven't seen Wyatt in a while on the game sheet. Not sure why. Injured?

Kizimov needs to crack the KHL squad next year, but he still has some time. Especially since he is outperforming Chebykin, Bobylev, and Kara in the VHL despite being 2-3 years younger.

I think it just shows that the standards need to be high for a lot of European prospects.

Jukurit returns from the Covid19 break, and Rindell assists on the 1st goal. Right now in the 2nd period.

He looks bored down there. Like he's playing NHL career mode and starts mashing buttons to skip the goal animation as soon as it goes in.

It's a shame that the VHL isn't a real option for him. Too good for MHL, not going to get playing time in the KHL. He needs to be challenged more than this, yet at the same time, still needs to actually play.

He's a guy I would almost want to sign now and bring over to the Marlies. The next two seasons are so important for his development and this no mans land is where a lot of decent prospects get stuck. Not sure what the status of his KHL contract is though.

Throw him on the Marlies next year (His ELC slides) with Abramov/SDA/maybe Amirov.

I would give Amirov and Ovchinnikov one more year in Russia. They have those years left on their deals anyways.

After that, both come to the AHL at 20. Maybe the Leafs need to try a more "pressured" approach with their Russian prospects if they are not making the KHL at a reasonable age. They should consider the same with the 22 year old Kizimov at that point too (although maybe we only give him an AHL deal). If they are serious about coming to the NHL at any point, they should be interested. They'd get great development opportunities, competitive pay (on an ELC or AHL deal, especially if they are not in the KHL), and can work their way up to the NHL which is where they should want to go. If it doesn't work out, then they should be much better players when they head back to the KHL than if they stayed in Russia.
