It’s great news to have him rumoured to sign. Despite being an American Olympian I feel like Nick kinda gets lost in the shuffle in our prospect pool.

Maybe that just goes to show how deep and pool really is.

But what the heck is the deal with these 2 year ELC’s? Aren’t they all supposed to be 3 year?

From my limited understanding, he's too old to qualify for 3 years and his age goes along with a 2 year ELC.

Not at his age. It is only 2 years, and for some older guys (i.e. all of the Russians we signed recently) it is only one year.

ELC length is determined by age.

Makes sense. I guess that also explains the Douglas ELC.

Does his ELC slide if he plays under a certain amount of pro games this year? Or will he burn his first year if he plays any AHL or NHL this season?

If you are over the ELC slide age (20), it only takes one game to burn an ELC year.

To the best of my understanding.

So if the Leafs sign Abruzesse and he plays one game this season he will need a new contract at the end of next season then?

I wouldn't mind seeing an Abruzzese - Spezza - Blackwell line.

Figure the rest out once Knies signs. Hopefully a long Leafs run but if they bow out early, Knies and Abruzzese should get some Marlies playoff games too.

Top 20 I'd say. Like Winnipeg took Lucius 18th, plays for the same team, and Knies is way more noticeable every game I watch.

(He should've been picked in the first round at the draft anyways, like 35 at worst).
I was thinking the same thing. Maybe even top-15 because of the rare quality of physicality and offense that he brings. (although I won't post that take on the mainboards......not yet, at least. ;))

Now I know why Leafs didn't go after a top 6 forward this deadline. One of Knies/Abruzzese HAS to factor in to an NHL line this season, if not both.

Abruzzese with JT and Willy? Knies on an energetic 4th line with Blackwell and Kerfoot/Kase?

Well if he wants to go then we trade his rights correct?
If they don't think he will sign with the Leafs after his senior season, they will likely trade his rights like Minny just did with McBain.

Even if he goes back for this season it doesn't mean he doesn't want to sign with the Leafs though. It could just meas he wants to go back to finish his degree, or finish what he started, etc.

At this point in our cap structure it is better to get him to RFA earlier, keeps that second contract low.
I'm not clear how that would work. Are you thinking he be less advanced getting to RFA earlier so would demand less?

Ya exactly. Burn an ELC this year, unless he goes on to win the Calder next year he likely re-signs at near league minimum bridge.

You get 2-3 years of ~900k-1.5 mill for a potential productive player over the life of that contract.

At the time that second contract expires, JT will either be gone or making significantly less than his current 11 mill and that money can be used to re-up these prospects.
