Marlies down 4-0 after 1. This coach is so bad

All of the defense has been awful, and I really question his lineup choices.

He constantly switches up the defensive pairings and puts random guys on their off-side. Like Rubins and Dahlstrom should not be on their off-side very often, if at all. First goal was a failed Dahlstrom pinch on his off-side leading to an odd-man rush.

Especially when Finkelstein and Hollowell, a pair of natural RD, are sitting in the press box and you are using another RD in Duszak as a forward (which was a stupid idea in the first place and has not paid off in the slightest) when Ovchinnikov, Blandisi, Chyzowski, and Clifford are all healthy scratches.

And on top of that, he puts Kivihalme, who is absolute trash and has been since pretty much the start of his Marlies career, on the top pairing with Myers. Myers hasn't played well himself today, but Kivihalme brings little to no offensive ability and is a complete liability defensively. He should NEVER be in the lineup unless we are suffering injuries or we have a 3-in-3 or something, and in that case, he should be stapled to the bottom pairing getting the garbage minutes (although even then I would rather just use Hellickson).

Kral, Myers, Dahlstrom, Duszak, Rubins, Hollowell... That should be your defensive lineup. Figure out who is the best partner for Myers, but after that, keep the pairings the same and occasionally rotate in Krys and Finkelstein. It is not the best defensive lineup ever, but those 6 guys + our solid goaltending group are more than good enough for the Marlies to at least stay out of the basement in terms of GA... Which is where we consistently find ourselves with Moore as HC. And at least he is playing guys who have the most NHL upside out of that group rather than guys who almost certainly won't be here next year (Krys, Kivihalme, and likely Finkelstein too). If you are going to make questionable lineup decisions, at least play the prospects.

Petruzzelli 4 goals on 8 shots.

He could have maybe stopped one or two of them of them, but as is typically the case for most of our Marlies goalies, it is not really on him.

Goal 1: The classic 4-on-1 odd man rush. Poor pinch by Dahlstrom. Poor coverage by Douglas. Kral left on an island.

Goal 2: Kivihalme looks like he is in pain and is just floating around doing nothing. Myers loses his man in front. Not a great rebound by Petruzzelli I guess but that is one the defense has to have covered.

Goal 3: Krys no-look giveaway. Petruzzelli probably should have had that one.

Goal 4: Kivihalme and Myers get absolutely dummied defensively.

This is basic **** that our AHL coach can't coach out apparently... and I know it is not just the personnel because it started popping up a lot more when he showed up even when he had the same defensive personnel as Keefe in his first year. There are also some combinations that have really worked under Moore but yet he is too dumb to keep them together for any prolonged period of time for whatever reason.

It's fine to be frustrated at a coach and not think he's good. But to misplay a 2 on 1, what coach is going to tell you to play in the middle and not do anything. Or tell a guy to miss his check and then have a 2 on 1 from the blueline.

Well why are they misplaying 2-on-1's? Are we not practicing how to handle 2-on-1 situations? It is one thing when you get to the NHL and you are mostly a finished product, but a lot of these guys are not finished products. If a guy is not handling 2-on-1's properly, then it is his job to make sure they learn. That is the main purpose of our AHL team after all.

It is also the line combinations too. A casual fan think it is easy for a LD to just switch over to RD and play the same way, or to play with a new partner every game, but it is not that easy. He is the one who makes those decisions, and he is the one who makes is next to impossible for these guys to get into any kind of rhythm. They don't need to have the same partner every game for the entire season, but sticking with a pairing (that works) for more than a couple of games would be nice and would likely help them perform better.

This is where development vs. drafting comes in. We are putting good prospects in that lineup, and it is on the coaching to make sure they develop into good players who don't make those mistakes. At least not as often they are making them now. We are not asking him to turn them into star players, but it seems like even the basic fundamentals for pro players are not getting taught at times. The quality of prospect on the Marlies has not really been getting worse, but it seems like few are really benefitting from development under Moore (at least relative to Keefe), and that most of the noticeable gains in prospect development are had in the offseason when they are working with the Leafs coaching or their own skill coaches rather than seeing general progression over the course of the AHL season.

I believe Knies has a game today...anybody know what time? Thanks in advance!
Ah, I found it: 4 pm ET and it's on ESPN2 in the States!

Wouldn't mind Minnesota losing today. If they win, the frozen four starts on April 7 and Knies would miss a few NHL games that he could use to get accustomed to the NHL. If they lose, the ELC likely comes in the next 2 or 3 days and he can come in sooner and get more games under him. Both of them could make their debut at the same time.
I think there is a decent chance both Knies and Abruzzese are playing game 1 of the playoffs.

I doubt it unless there are injuries.

Bunting - Matthews - Marner
Blackwell - Tavares - Nylander
Engvall - Kampf - Mikheyev
Kerfoot - Spezza - Kase

Unless you see the Leafs sitting both Spezza and Simmonds, it seems unlikely.

IIRC, Knies and Abruzzese aren't eligible for the playoffs as they signed after the trade deadline/roster freeze.

I think that applies to player rights. We owned their rights before the deadline, so it should be fine.

I don't think Ben Meyers would be eligible though (for example).

I believe there are exceptions for college level players.

Didn't the Bruins do this with McAvoy a few years back?
Makar played with the Avs in the playoffs when he debuted. I think the rule only applies to players' post-trade deadline or UFAs in general. If it's a prospect that is signed, they are eligible.
