A coach friend of mine says there is nothing better than a big goalie. Petruzzelli had the bottom covered, and they couldn't go over him either.
He's never been a fan of small goalies.
I have to agree on this one. I think there was a time when being on the smaller end was doable when the average NHL shot was like Wayne Simmond's shot, but nowadays these guys are so damn good at getting that puck off their tapes quickly and accurately that you really need a big goalie to cover that ground.
To me, 6'02 is kind of the minimum height that I'd want to draft. If you even look at MAF, he has never struck me as a big goaltender, but he is still listed at 6'02. Sure there are anomalies (Shesterkin), but I genuinely think the bigger goalies are more consistent game to game. When you have to rely on your athleticism too much to compensate for your height you end up having more off nights than a bigger goalie that plays sound positionally. Jonathon Bernier is a name that instantly comes to mind. So much talent and ability, but he just couldn't cover enough of the net to cement himself as an everyday guy. It's unfortunate, because he really is as talented a goaltender we've had since Belfour/Cujo when looking at athleticism and reflexes.
For me, I like the goalies like Demko and Marky, those 2 play a style that doesn't lend itself to many off nights. They are the perfect blend of althetic, position and size. Petru Profiles very similarly, but just doesn't have quite as big of a pedigree as they did at the same age. But it's not like Petru is a slouch either, he's a 3rd round selection. So he's still got high pedigree IMO.
For a team like ours we don't need our guy to steal games often. We just need them to give us a chance each game. I think Petru has a real chance at being that down the line. Kallgren might be the most NHL ready goalie in our system, but Petru has always been the guy who has the highest ceiling IMO.
