Was Minten really that far away last year? I mean we sent him back down, but he just needed some seasoning. He's smart defensively, responsible. Is he really a stretch from a Holmberg? I won't be surprised if he's up and an upgrade with upside.
I’m a big Holmberg backer, but he hasn’t been great.
Minten has all the internal qualities to slide into a role and handle it. Smart, strong, attentive, but not so offensively creative that he can drive a line. If expectations for production are modest, he’d probably hold his own.
This is where it would be great to space out the premium offensive guys to elevate the two-way guys numbers some. That’s why you pay them.
If you look back to Hyman and Bunting, AM and MM were always in their ears, communicating, directing, helping them elevate. I don’t really notice that with anyone else.
If Minten slides into a third line role, make that Mitch’s line 5v5 to drive and lead.

Let's hope they don't throw picks away at the deadline, and instead stay inhouse and develop their prospects. Don't waste opportunities on rentals.
Only five picks away from having full draft cards for 25 and 26 and still some extra bodies around. Discounted, but getting closer to full.
Hopefully we see a bit more health so some of the excesses can be turned into more lotto tickets.
Then rinse, lather repeat.

I feel like this has been the plan for this group. Between healthy scratches and IR at the NHL level and viable options on the Marlies, we already seem to have the types of guys we often trade for in Jarnkrok, Dewar, Steeves, Minten, Grebenkin, Benoit, Myers, Benning, Murray and Hildeby.

We might make more of a hockey trade than a rental.

I was hoping Holmberg could be a Kampf replacement on the 4th C hole coming into this season. But, he's been so awful, I don't see it anymore.

This.

Bringing in guys like OEL, Tanev, and Hakanpaa inspires confidence that we aren’t throwing picks away like previously done to bring in UFA’s like Edmundson and Boosh, who proved not good enough.

If our defence can stay healthy, there’s a lot to like there for the playoffs.

Forward is interesting, where we hope guys like Minten and Grebs can push their way in, but also recognizing our 3rd line isn’t where we need it to be.

3C will be the most interesting position to watch, as whoever our playoff 3C is stands to have the most impactful change to our current lineup.

As much as the dream is Minten to take that and run, I think it’s a lot to ask a kid and I think it’s too much to ask of him.

Would LOVE to be wrong though. :)

One thing with minten he is a sponge. So when he gets up with the big club berube will bring out the best in him.
The one thing that was holding him back was stating and I hear he is faster this yr.
Whe will probably be the first call up if they need a center.

So we probably saw him this yr.

Minten has a lot of great qualities, but his biggest challenge is offensive production. He's being held back, to try and maximize that offensive production, and he's really excelling at the AHL level. As long as we are in the pack here in the division, I'm good with holding him back, but it would be incredible if he was an internal solution to the current 3C issue.

Holmberg just must not fit with what Berube's doing, because he looked a lot better last year, and looked like a guy with more to give.... but he's been ungood so far.

Yeah, might not be a fit anymore, as much as I’d love him to be.
You can see he still plays hard, he battles, but things are not going his way.
I saw him as a prime candidate to pair with Willy, they seemed good complements.
Slowest burn possible for Minten makes sense. He goes to good places, not afraid of battles around the net. And by all accounts has a good shot. Paired with the smarts, there’s lots there to be hopeful about.

His goalssssss will come from in tight or crashing the net like Knies.

It’s a fair one.
I don’t know the league well enough to speak about matchups. Gets some pk time, but that gets spread out.
Haven’t paid close attention to zone times either or have data, but coach there seems to mostly just roll the lines. I mean, it’s early in the season, lots of vets there. And his group is used more like an energy line.
I’d say at this point, it’s more about a hierarchy of AHL guys and a hierarchy of NHL contract guys.
The top AHL guys get their minutes. Then the top NHL contract guy hierarchy works in there. I think he’s lower on the totem pole than the vets (Steeves/Abruzzese) and risers (Minten/Grebs/Hirvonen/Tverberg) so I think he’s gotta do some leapfrogging.
But dude has skill and tools. Does dangerous things, isn’t shy physically, makes plays, gets in good scoring position and transitions well from O>D and D>O.
It’s early for him as a pro, but I wouldn’t say his ceiling is fourth line, I could see him on a third line in the NHL in time.
And lets be perfectly transparent.
Just because we have Holmberg (For example) playing on the third line that doesn't mean he is a 3rd line talent. Just where he fits on our roster.

There is a need for a third line centre on the Leafs, and Minten might be our best option by the trade deadline.
He might not be fully ready for it but if he is our best option slot him in!!

Even if everything breaks Mintens way and he is a third line center this year or next year we need to still find another medium term center for top 9.

Beautiful B.C.
First time trying to catch a game with our 4th rounder Victor Johansson, he should be playing with Leksands IF j20 team right now.

Edit: Trying to see if i spot #48, the quality is actually f***ing SICK for this game.

a j20 swedish league has better stream quality than most Canadian Jr hockey

He strikes me as the type of guy who is better as a pro than he was as a junior level player.

I think Murray could go for picks to a team struggling with goaltending.
At this point I'd rather just hang onto him. I don't have confidence that Woll doesn't get hurt again.

Listening to Tatti on 1050, had the Marlies guy on and he said Minten has been outstanding his first three games. I agree, with his IQ and defensive prowess, he should translate better to the NHL.

Tatti, as in Jim Tatti???

Is that guy still around??? 😳

Love to hear about a high IQ.

So many skilled players over the years that proved to be lacking between the ears, starting with Kapanen.

You can’t teach hockey IQ.

You either have it or you don’t.

I am starting to think Minten is going to end up the 3C sooner than later.
Don't like the prospects of grabbing a 3C at the deadline.
I said this a little while back.

I don't want to rush him too fast, but if he keeps this up he needs a look.

It'd be big if he could be the 3C later this season without having to spend a lot on one.
