maybe we have enuff shrimps

Maybe they sign him, maybe they don’t. But Marlies still need players, and with the lack of draft picks the last few years, we won’t have a lot of young “prospects”. There is more than just Leafs players to think about… and well this forum is famous for obsessing over players we gave away too early.

What's the low down on Steeves? Can't say I recall a prospect who from age ~22-24 in the AHL consistently put up top line numbers (has 154 points in 188 AHL games, pretty evenly distributed among his 3 seasons), and then pretty much never got a shot in the NHL. Maybe Kozun, but he was 5'8.

He's been given 7 NHL games, at most 3 in any season, and generally <10 minutes per game. So really, he hasn't been given any kind of shot at the NHL level. Is he an awful skater? Have some other issue likely to hold him back? Like he could easily be the next AHL AAAA player (eg Petan, TJ Brennan, etc), but he could also be the next Marchment/McMann. Would be a shame to watch him flourish elsewhere after never getting a shot here, especially when C depth has been a weakness of ours.

Is Steeves a center? I thought he was playing mostly wing.

Yeah, maybe Greb-Holmberg-Nylander could work. Greb is chippy, Holmberg responsible, and Willy can drive it.
A Marner trade could reshape things. If there’s a C in there, maybe they slot with Pontus OR Greb on one flank with Willy on the other.
If Cowan sticks, I could see NickRob OR McMann-JT-Cowan working. That could distribute the offence well and push guys down.
The others compete on rhe fourth line with Dewar and Reaves and for a chance to move up.
Lots of in house options that get deeper if we see a big trade.

That’s good information.
And those players go through their learning curves.
I like the sounds of that.
It would be weird to trade Lilly only to call up a smaller, weaker version of him.
Lily won't get traded if he signs a 2 year $1.4 M contract. He is 3rd pairing with Edmundson. He has no real trade value right now.

If he is good enough to be a 3rd pairing dman at 25 yrs of age, he has some trade value. But not the first we invested to pick him in the first place.

I doubt Leafs move him for a 2nd and he won't get much at contract time.

He signed that deal last time so he's getting a pay rise on his next deal

Caps gone up and we're buying more UFA years
So give him a one year. He either plays well or is TD bait.

The cap has only gone up like 6% thought. A 6% raise on 1.4 is still under his qualifying offer of 1.5

We were buying RFA years though, I'm presuming we're buying UFA years now to (unless it's a one year deal)

I doubt you get much change out of a couple of Mill, which is still bottom pair money so then it's just how you feel about the guy

He's getting a raise
Switched mid thought from "Next 2 are RFA" to "two years to UFA"

The only thing he might have in has favour is a potential arbitration ruling with his point totals, facing GM that didnt sign his last deal and just re-upped someone he seems to value more (Benoit) for less

I don't know if Tre values him enough to even bother taking him to arb, he may just throw him into a deal or trade him for a pick

If thats all he is. yes I think this would be as a 3rd pairing pp guy so not used the same way. I'm looking forward to Niemela's year two in the A to see how much 70 games of experience and a summer working out show on the ice. We will get a look at some of that in camp.

Any chance Leafs use Niemela as a #6, #7 guy next year? With PP minutes on either unit depending on how it goes?

No hate whatsoever but zero chance. He’s nowhere close to ready yet and should be given the proper time to develop. A few games here or there maybe as an injury call up, but generally he should be left alone in the AHL for the season.

If Liljegren gets traded his chances of that improve but I think most likely scenario is he will be first call up in case of injury

If Liljegren gets traded, I’m sure we’d bring in an experienced 3rd pair UFA so I don’t think Niemela’s position changes much.

I think hes worth keeping in the system, especially if.he has a strong next season. At least as an AHL/ECHL path for the next couple years. I'd see him more as a potential #7/6

He's got s good hockey IQ, makes lots of quite plays really well which don't always make.thr highlight reel but make a positive on ice impact

I think an organization drafts a guy like Michael Koster with the hope he goes on an exponential development curve and all the attributes you see translate via college to pros and you suddenly have an Adam Fox, impact defenseman in the NHL at a small size but is worth it due to tremendous impact he brings. Kind of an all or nothing type who isn't going to be particularly serviceable if he doesn't make it. (Think Mac Hollowell).

The Leafs will need to shift money around and use some young and cheapest to do it. Our needs are elsewhere. Both Niemela and Grebs could surprise and make the team to replace more expensive guys we can't resign i.e Lily and Bert.
