For me one of the big things that will make it tough for Cowan is, despite LW being a bit of a weakness for us, it's the area where we have a lot of young players.

Knies is a lock in the top 9. McMann will be on the team. Robertson is no longer waiver exempt next year. That's 3 LW spots, all to guys with under 100 games NHL experience. Holmberg is another in the mix with under 100 games, although a C/W. I believe his waiver exemption has now expired as well.

Regardless of fans opinions "good" teams typically want some veteran experience in that mix as well. It will be tough to make the team for Cowan.

Of course injuries and trades could see that picture change.

Cowan could be better than Robertson and Knies, McMann brings a little different game.

Knies has to show more powerforward ability. I don't think he has shown a lot in that regard.

Yes, it will be tough, but he just might be better.

Possible, just wanted to point out the roster implications. He doesn't just need to be better, he needs to be better to the point they're willing to waive/trade other young talent they spent time developing to make room for him.

This thread was a lot more useful when it was used to track prospects. Maybe we can get a new thread created where this guy can discuss his opinions on the merits of development leagues existing.

Anyways - anyone have an idea of when Quillan might get his first game with the Marlies? I saw he was assigned jersey # 61.

EDIT: Looks like Quillan will make his debut tomorrow vs Utica.

I really don't think there is plenty of good competition, unless Grebyonkin comes over.

If you mean there might be several Marlies who are more mature, not as talented, not as gifted, not with the same drive, but more experienced yes.

Who have been the call-ups this year? Steeves 1 game?

Their Marlies prospects look underwhelming, and not top 6 capable.

Will Cowan be ready? I don't know. I'd say if they are looking for top 6 though, they aren't likely finding it on the Marlies. Maybe Quillan has top 6 potential, hard to know, but yes he is 22 years old, so physically more mature. I don't know, Quillan, just watched a highlight package that included him and mates, but he seemed to be beneficiary of plays not the creator. Obviously, highlight packages don't show 200 foot game, they usually are like 50' from the net inward.

Cowan will only be 19, and not a lot of 19 year olds in the league.
Yes, he can continue to learn and develop in the OHL, if it is required. This is where the CHL-NHL agreement with regards to AHL deployment comes up short.
Robertson and Holmberg might not make the team to start the playoffs, both of those guys are very good depth options

Cowan is going to have to show he's ready because he's got some good competition

I have my fingers crossed that Cowan eventually transitions to C at the NHL level.
Originally thought it was a long shot but it is becoming closer to 50/50 in my mind.

He has played quite a bit of C recently, and was even playing as a C in training camp for the Leafs.
Does not look out of place at all at C against this lower level competition.

I'd guess he's a winger at the pro level, nothing wrong with that.

Asking him for his favourite Leafs moment, he's 22. Not a whole lot of good memories in the last 10 years :whatever:
You mean the record setting past 10 years?

There's a lot of disappointment in the playoffs, but that disappointment is so prominent bc we've been icing arguably the best Leafs team ever

Lots of good moments

I've been following since 2005/2006 myself. It's been a really good 10 years compared to the 2007-2015ish years for sure, but one series win in 8 series definitely produces lots of pain.

Anyways, not the thread for this discussion, apologies.

Hopefully he's developed as center.

With a lot of signings falling into place, I think the next few weeks will be telling about what the team is planning on doing with Koster, Miettinen and Lisowsky
Koster - 5th year with U of Minnesota
Miettinen - turning Pro NOT with TOR
Lisowsky - no clue

A) love Robertson and wish he was used more, but I would be surprised if hes wearing the maple leaf come september
B) i think McMann is overrated

Statistically none of Lisowsky, Miettinen or Koster have played themselves out of an ELC. They all have had 1 big year and a few average ones. Miettinen didn't take a penalty in 4 years and scored 20 goals this season, Quillan only had 17. Koster is the captain of Minnesota, a solid school. Lisowsky scored 42 goals himself this season. It comes down to them all being 5'9 and on the softer side. Treliving didn't draft these guys, he will only sign them if they have upside.

Should be a first look at Quillan at 4pm today against Utica. Marlies need to win with their games in hand to keep their playoff spot.
