Marlies, Cyclones, and Prospect Discussion

Any other free wallets on the radar?
I'm not expecting anything too major from this NCAA market ELC-wise for the Leafs - the main one I wonder about is Quinn Hutson once BU is done just because there seemed to be a lot of mutual interest discussed when he attended last year's Dev Camp. That would be a 2y ELC if it were to happen. I think other names of ELC interest are probably returning to school if they haven't signed yet, other than maybe TJ Hughes, who may want to finish the year in the NHL if he signs.

I think the Haymes/Prokop ELC's and the Kirwan AHL deal could be their headliners of this class (a great outcome), but they'll sign a number of the '99-'02 born seniors/5th years at all positions to AHL deals still to fill out Marlies depth and the Cyclones roster for next year. Some of the '04 CHL overagers who havent committed to the NCAA yet could be AHL deal targets too (I like Sam Alfano, Brayden Edwards, and Hunter Mayo most)

He's 23 so if they believed he had any NHL potential, you'd need to try within 12-24 months of signing him to see what you have.

OT:

Nathan Mayes

Spokane Chiefs

Only 1 American on the team.

Similar to all their American Division.

More like traveling teams than local teams.

Wonder if that might change with the new NCAA rules?

Nathan Mayes, not OT- at arms length seems to have made comparable strides as McCue and gone from 7th round afterthought to legitimate prospect. Big toolsy DFD.

Heads up that the Marlies are playing a school game today. Starts at 1045am against Utica. Utica out of the playoff picture, Marlies need points.

Have your ear plugs ready for screeching kids.

Hildeby gets the start. Ryan Reaves sighting. Ryan Tverberg and John Prokop draw back in.

Marlies love playing from behind. Give up a shortie when Prokop can’t hold the line.

Reavo on the pk? That’s a decision.

Pretty quick first period despite a bunch of penalties.

Not much excitement in the first. Best chance generated by Jake Quillan - crisp cross crease pass, tip was missed.

Interesting lines:
Pare-Shaw-Steeves - Pare up, NickA down
Reaves-Quillan-Nylander
Abruzzese-Haymes-Tverberg - maybe Nick moved down to generate chances for Haymes and maybe get Tverberg going a lil
Mastrosimone-Blandisi-Solow

Takeaway? Pare getting moved to wing, moved up the lineup, getting PP time. Maybe being ramped up to be a playoff depth guy, and maybe a playoff depth ace? That’s prolly why Reavo is getting some reps
Two NHL contract guys with Haymes again, spreading the offence through three lines

D pairings mixed and matched.
Rifai-Villeneuve
Mermis-Niemela
Prokop-Webber
Prokop got pp time, not successful this time.

Better second for the Marlies.
Top line tied it up with a strong possession shift. Shaw from Steeves and WillyNeuve.
Couple big saves from Hildebeast, quick post to post.
5-4 scrum at end of period. Reavo contained two guys muttering something to the effect of ‘you don’t wanna do this’.

Reaves reported? Wow, did not see that coming.

Interested to hear how Quillan, Haymes, and Prokop do.
I’m guessing Reaves’ll get a few games down the stretch and join the Leafs for the po’s.

Prokop didn’t play much, so, not much to comment on. Big miss controlling a pass on a first period pp, leading to a short handed breakaway goal. Did have a nice close out along the wall in the third, creating a turnover.
Haymes was solid, no egregious plays that I noticed. First game with these linemates. They had a couple strong shifts in the third, including a nice saucer from Haymes in traffic that didn’t convert.
Quillan the best of the three in this one, overall, and generated two grade A chances. Active in all zones, with pace. His hands are sometimes too quick and eager, leading to sone bobbles, but makes plays. Had a pass towards the oppo net picked off that led to the odd man rush game winner in OT.

Awesome.

Considering Quillan is only 23, the they are all far from finished products and can develop, but nice that they are showing that they have a chance.

No guarantees but better than nothing, and something to look forward to.

Does Quillan have Bozaks' smarts?
Haven’t seen any Marlies games.

I will defer to our more knowledgeable Marlie watchers on that one.

If Quillan could step in at 4C next season so we can move off of Kampf that would be a huge win for us.

Hopefully we could recover some draft capital moving Kampf as well as free up $2.4m to help sign a 2/3C.
