Market Pressure (and where would you prefer to play?)

I've seen that in plenty of player interviews as a Rangers fan. Not sure where that poster is getting it from. Hell, Marian Gaborik walked through the streets of NYC with a damn tree on his shoulder and no one even blinked at him.
You maybe able to blend in the crowd in New York unlike in Canadian markets, but you and your relatives can't escape the social media etc. The volume there is still going to be massive.

That's exactly it. I think, honestly, outside of being a star/starting role, New York has so much going on culturally and in the sports scene that unless you're in the SCF you're probably not getting a lot of attention for the rest of the year, relatively speaking.
While I find it hard to believe, I certainly won’t deny the experiences of players who have experienced it if that’s what they say. Still think I would opt for NJ over either NY team if the objective was to be as anonymous as possible though

Yeah it's why I mentioned Buffalo. Long-suffering team with some history but less scrutiny that could be fun to play in if they can break the cycle of losing.

If you play in Montreal and Quebecois, you are a God in rural Quebec.

I did business with a factory north of Montreal. The GM of the division could point out every house that housed a former or current NHLer and in fact, eating at the local StHubert, I saw a bit of a fuss over at a table and the waitress told me it was a hockey player, but didn't know who.

For me, better to be a local hero then a big city zero.

Pressure cooker:
Toronto.
.
.
Montreal
The rest of the Canadian teams

Least pressure:
Columbus
Anaheim
Nashville
Arizona would be here, but in Utah they have a lot of buzz being new

Montreal (photographers will pose as doctors just to get a Pic of an injured player in the hospital)
Toronto (it's not just local, it's a national spotlight as the "national" broadcasters talk Leafs 90% of the time)

Edmonton- ghost of Gretzky

the bottom 3 are pretty much a 25 way tie amongst American teams

Nashville

Been to recently and really liked it and it would be awesome to make millions, have a solid fan base but then completely anonymous once I stepped away from the arena. And no state income tax (and I believe it is even an amendment in their state constitution)

Oh, and I love country music (while being a metalhead)

In Montreal, you are dumb in 2 languages, and the unique tmz style of gossiping that exists is off putting.

It's been called the best place to play when the team is winning but it can be also be a miserable place when things aren't going so well.

Excluding my favorite team because of bias, my top teams I'd want to play

Rangers - I love NY, but maybe it wouldn't be as much fun living there 🤷‍♂️
Any of the California teams
Florida - weather

Bottom
Utah
Columbus
Winnipeg
Buffalo

I would choose to be the biggest star for Toronto and have great regular seasons but purposefully mail it in in the playoffs just to piss off the fanbase.

New York is at the bottom of market pressure? LOL, WTF? The New York media? The Rangers are the most scrutinized hockey team in the United States. It's the biggest market in the US with the biggest fanbase of any American team. Maybe the Islanders and Sabres are bottom-3 in pressure, but equating them with the Rangers as it pertains to market pressure is just ridiculous. Apples and oranges.

Yes, places like Toronto and Montreal have bigger hockey markets and thus more pressure. They would probably be 1 and 2, but the New York Rangers have to be in the top-5 for being the only NYC hockey team in the media capital of the world.

Some (ahem) media & fanbase like to act like they create the pressure, when in reality it's pure indecency and annoyance. Noise and attention does not equal pressure. Seeing these weasel reporters, especially in Toronto, try to take credit for "pressure" is hilarious. That's not pressure. It's a nuisance, and a byproduct of a toxic environment surrounding the team, driven heavily by social media. It's an extra, annoying layer that athletes have to deal with in certain markets, but don't get it confused with pressure. That's how these goofballs give themselves credit in a backwards way.

Most Pressure:
Toronto
Montreal
Edmonton

Least Pressure:
Anaheim
Florida
Nashville

I would choose mostly based on lifestyle, weather, and my personal preferences about cities so it would be Los Angeles, Anaheim, Vegas, Florida, Tampa or Dallas. Maybe Nashville. Arizona if they still had a team. I would probably want to play for the Rangers at some point in my career because I'm a Ranger fan, but I wouldn't want to settle down there. Some of the teams I'd choose happen to be smaller markets but I don't prefer smaller markets, I just prefer those cities. All else being equal I'd prefer the bigger market with more pressure.

I'd personally want to play in a scrutinous market. I'd rather feed off the energy of the Bell Centre or MSG or whatever than wonder why I'm wasting my career for some team nobody cares about.

I also always seemed to thrive in high-pressure situations. Makes me take the situation more serious.

If you are a winner, why wouldn't you want to do it where it gets the most attention? You just get treated like a god in high pressure markets. Pressure really just means.. The fans and media care.

Most pressure
Toronto
Montreal
Pick a Canadian team here

Least pressure
Columbus
Minnesota
Nashville
