Mark Stone the Headhunter

I don't think there's a conspiracy against Ottawa - I just think that the people in the DoPS are a lot more liberal handing out suspensions that won't be controversial.

Imagine suspending a star player in Montreal vs suspending a star player in Ottawa or Columbus - a newer, smaller market.

It's just sad to see once again - an unintentional hit to the head gets punished but Zetterberg can run around jumping at the heads of other players and he doesn't get anything because he plays for Detroit - an old, established franchise with a bigger base.

I'm ok with that. He hit the guy right in the head with his shoulder. Intentional or not we'd be calling for someone's head if that happened to one of our guys.

From seeing the hit, I'd say a fine was in order -- but not 2 games for no intent. Especially given that he was driven into that lane by another Wings player.

I think he wanted to hit Ferraro, but fully committed then mis-judged it. It's a reckless play and guys have gotten suspended for that before.

To be fair, Cowen didn't get suspended when he hit Datsyuk.

I don't think it's a conspiracy against smaller markets, it's just very inconsistent.

Intent is difficult to judge

His reaction to the hit was not of one who was fully committed... he got spun around funny as a result of it. Not to mention he was skating around the other Wings player a split second earlier.

And there you go. Sometimes the paranoid conspiracy theory folks are right. Small market teams like Ottawa are treated like garbage. Original 6 teams are special snowflakes that get away with everything.

You have to be blind not to see it.

Proof?

Again, why didn't Cowen get suspended for his hit on Datsyuk a couple years back?

The DoPS has never been consistent.

And Cowen got an overly long and excessive suspension the next time (for a nothing play...way less than the Zetterberg elbow) as a "make up" call.

Damn my gif blew up. Seen it in 5-6 places already inlcuding r/hockey and all over twitter. Should've probably posted in on Friday night and not 2 days later after DOPS decided to keep this hit under the rug. Sorry guys, my bad.

Not bad at all. Having it out there, whether it's late or not, is definitely a great thing.

We need to start putting quotation marks around "original."

Such a ******** arbitrary distinction.

I have no issue with the suspension other then the leagues inconsistency with calling head shots. Just call any contact with the head a penalty and suspension at this point

Sens should never expect fairness when it comes to the so called Dept of Player Safety. It's a sham farce set up to pretend like the NHL tried to monitor and control safety in future lawsuits.

Most Recent Proof:

Lazar concussed and not a whisper. Pageau gets a broken nose from a clear high elbow hit to the face from Zetterberg and Quintal deems it not worthy of further action. The game refs missed the play but surely post safety review is supposed to take care of that. Zetterberg raised his elbow well before making contact so obviously planned that high hit yet it's not even worthy of a warning or fine!!!! How does he explain that??? Seems that he doesn't have to because Detroit wasn't playing his buddies Montreal the next game they were playing the Sens!!.

I believe I was the first person on here to suggest he might get one or two games, so I can't exactly say I'm surprised by the decision, but I still say if he was playing for Toronto or Montreal he doesn't even get a call. It's not necessarily a conspiracy against Ottawa, it's just a bias against small markets in general, especially when it's not clear cut whether the player intended to injure or not.

Then again, it should be obvious that Mark Stone is a clean player, and considering this is the first time he's gotten a call, they should have probably gone with a fine/warning.

It also sucks because we play two Canadian teams this week and missing Stone will hurt us a lot.

Yeah two free wins have turned into two maybes.

Another consideration = Insider Ray Ferraro = Don't touch the boy of a friend!

That's a big reason why various talking heads (announcers, McGuire on the radio, newspaper folks) were kind of laying low since the game on Saturday and guarding their words. Don't want to rock that boat.

McGuire especially disappointed me this morning on the radio (the rare time I listed to 1200, to get his take on Stone/Zetterberg)....very guarded, and heaven forbid they call it like it is with the legendary Zetterberg, either.

Truth isn't as important as keeping those connections and the brotherhood happy.

guys I'm serious the NHL has already said it will not do anything like the NFL for head injuries and i think they'll have to have a zero tolerance head injury policy basically, or be left open to be sued.

look out for stone when he gets back. just saying. he will not be a happy boy. points explosion upcoming.
