Marian Gaborik

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses - more excuses for Gaborik. Its at the point where theres too much baggage and not enough production to warrant his $7.5M price tag for too much longer. And I dont mean baggage in the traditional sense like hes a malcontent. I mean that it sure seems like conditions needs to be perfect in order for Gaborik to consistently produce. Lets see...

-needs to play right wing
-needs to be 100% healthy, usually isnt
-cant create on his own (unless healthy, usually isnt - or at least thats the excuse)
-disappears in overtly physical games, as the playoffs usually are
-wrong side of 30 - depends heavily on speed

We see this as Ranger fans. What makes you thinks 29 other teams dont see this? And what makes you think they're going to give up a huge package for a player who certainly appears to be on the decline?

I'm glad somebody said it. Gaborik's injury history somehow earned him a special status whereby when he's playing well he's assumed to be 100% healthy but any time he starts suck or to struggle or slump, a fair amount of fans will claim he obviously must be injured or battling an injury - never pointing the finger at Gaborik or considering that he's playing poorly by his own doing the way we know every other player in this league is capable of.

When Richards stinks up the joint no one assumes he's injured or makes excuses for his poor play, but when Gabby does the same, blame always gets deflected to an assumed 'weak' shoulder or sore groin. The guy had a long off-season to heal and recooperate and like I said earlier, Tortorella would have full knowledge of the players' injury status and he shows absolutely no qualms about benching Gabby (if he deserves it) or calling out the top players for their poor play. If he knew a guy was battling a nagging injury that was responsible for the poor performance, he would not be calling that player out in the manner that he does.

I find it funny that Gaborik, as one of three forwards who have truly met or exceeded expectations under Tortorella (him, Callahan, Prust), is run out of town to bring in more of the same kind of player that continually disappoints in NY and/or under Tortorella.

It makes no sense.

I'm very glad you said this, so many people give him a pass because he's "coming off of surgery" or "still sore." I agree with you 100%

This is a vague thought. "To bring in the kind of player that continually disappoints" - I dont know what you mean there.

But in regards to other players that have exceeded my expectations under Torts:

Stepan
Hagelin
Nash (so far)
McDonagh
Girardi
Stralman

I could probably go on.

Anyway, to play well under Tortorella, you need to have a high compete level, you need to be a battler. Gaborik is missing that gene. Thats fine when hes scoring 40 goals. Whats been happening over these last 2 months is not fine, and it seems to be getting worse. At 31 years old and checkered injury history, time is running short for him to find it again.

I'd add Boyle, Prospal, Fedotenko.

Wow, a post about Gaborik that doesn't ring hollow. Well done!

Poor Marian; his shoulder hurts, he's playing out of position, his groin is bothering him, his feelings are hurt, it's the wrong time of month, botta beep, botta bop!

Geeze, can't people around here accept Marian for who/what he is, and that is:

" A (supposedly) elite goal scorer who has(or once had) world class speed who can't stickhandle worth a **** and who when he isn't scoring goals, brings absolutely nothing else to the table."

There, I said it; now that wasn't so hard, was it??

Opps, I forgot; I'm the "Debbie Downer" who bashes most Ranger's players with the exception of a select few!

Nevermind!!

Was. Hasnt been this season.

Im starting to get fed up with his play and his need to be coddled lately, but I want him here for the rest of the season.

In the offseason, I think hes as good as gone - and I also think the Rangers would be getting rid of him at exactly the right time.

20 games is enough to run him out of town?

I can't wait til Rick Nash is on the trade market in 3 yrs time.

only malkin and stamkos were ahead of him last season. that is practically the definition of elite

What good is that doing for the Rangers this season?

And trust me, Im not a 'what have you done for me lately' kind of guy usually. But theres a ton of factors coming together regarding Gaborik that make his departure in the offseason a real possibility.

Torts didn't know about Gaby's shoulder during last postseason. not sure if he called him out or not.

I am absolutely not giving him a pass. He has to be better.

I am just saying it's not out of the realm of possibility that he's not playing one hundred percent, given that he just had shoulder surgery.

No but his poor work habits and softer than marcal tissue willingness to compete is!

I'm pretty sure Pittsburgh is eagerly wanting to get rid of Malkin as he is scored only 5 times in 21 games this season AND he's injured. I'm smelling a trade..

Come on guys, bashing Gaborik is justified and all given the way he is played but even thinking about trading him after this season (or now) is absolutely ridiculous.

Please please please, never use Malkin in the same sentence as Gaborik.

It's very viable that he is traded after this season. We will not be able to resign him in 2014.
