Confirmed with Link: Marian Gaborik to Columbus for Brassard, J. Moore and Dorsett

I like the deal

Gaborik came to NY for the price of a contract. Now he goes out the door for 3 NHL players that will fit within his salary slot. Even better !

Gabby clearly needs a fresh start and he will be the man in cbus if he can revive his scoring ways

Posted this on the main board a minute ago. This is how I feel about the trade:

The Rangers fan using a one game sample size to proclaim them self winners in the deal

I don't think those guys were serious. I guess it's more guys getting a good laugh at all the people saying it was a bad trade and 2 of the 3 new guys scoring goals.

All in all, I feel this is one of the few trades over the years which makes 2 teams better. The Rangers get a more depth, which we obviously lacked. We have a 3rd line center in Brassard, a 4th line enforcer in Dorsett and a talented D-man who pushes Hamrlik out of the line-up.

We gave up Gaborik, yes. But we needed to do that. We cannot afford his 7.5 m/y cap hit. We have players like Hagelin and McDonagh to re-sign soon and getting 3 players for less bucks on the cap hit just works for us. Gaborik scored 40+ goals, yes. However, the Rangers are better off with 3 lines scoring rather than having 1 top line. Depth is really underrated by many. Despite this feeling like one of those NHL13 trades, we do not live in a NHL13 world where you can have 3 forwards making 22 million a year on your top line and having to rely on them game after game.

What also made the trade easier to accept is the short term left on Gabby's contract. I am a bit sad for not getting a 1st round pick but going 1 draft year without a top pick isn't hurting us in the long run. We have talented guys in Kreider, Miller, Thomas, McIlrath, Fasth, Lindberg and Skjei for the near future. On top of that, our core is still very young.

Defensively we have Girardi (28), Stralman (26), Staal (26), Sauer (25, although he might retire due to his concussion), McDonagh (23), Moore (22) and del Zotto (22).

Up front we have Nash (28), Callahan (28), Powe (27), Dorsett (26), Zucarello (25), Brassard (25), Hagelin (24) and Stepan (22).

All these guys are still in their 20's. We're not Calgary (no offense). Are we going to miss Gaborik? YES! Both as a player and as a person. Will we go forward without him? I really think we will.

Dumbest trade ever.

And to think I was actually beginning to respect the Rangers FO. God damn it, they just swapped Dubinsky, Anisimov, and Gaborik for Nash and a bunch of filler.

Ok, this is just silly and uninformed. You name Dubi and AA, but call Brassard, Moore and Dorsett "filler". I admit not knowing much about the latter two going in, but do a little research. What are Dubi abd AA, but our own "filler". This post screams "they traded some of my favorite guys who I watched grow up for guys I've never heard of!" Well, that's what Brassard, Dorsett and Moore are from the CBJ point of view.

And I would argue that Brassard at the least - and potentially Moore - has more offensive upside than Dubi or AA (much as I loved the latter). Let's let it play out. I've always like Brassard. If he and Moore (and Dorsett) play half as well as they did last night, we're going to be thrilled with our "filler".

i under stand what your thinking.. and its hard rapping your head around it.. but we got good players back.. Brassard is only 25 with big upside of possibly being a 2c.. Moore is highly regarded and a former 1st rounder.. he'll be good here and hes the real wild card of the trade.. also dorsett by looking and reading what CLB fans started saying about him is hes our new prust..

I wouldve loved dubi in the trade, but honestly after actually reading up on who we got.. this trade looks good.. before yesterdays game i was only upset we didnt land a higher pick, but lets see how this plays out, bc last nights game was ridiculous!!!!

A Little backround info from a Columbus fan: Thought this might be helpful.
Brassard- Taken 6th overall 2 GMs ago. Was a highly-touted, dynamic, high-scoring junior player. Expectations were high from the start. Played well in his time in the AHL, and gave a sense of his potential not just there, but in his rookie season that saw him post 25 points in 32 games at the NHL level. Got his shoulder ripped out of socket in a fight with James Neal, and he never looked the same really. During those 32 games he was hands down our best player. Even over Nash. Showed heart, and creativity that we had hoped for.

Since then, it's been a different story. He's hinted at being the player that we saw, but couldn't keep it together. Was in Hitch's doghouse, and couldn't put up anything offensively. Hitch got fired, and Claude Noel stepped in as interim coach. Brassard's game took off under Noel. He was everywhere. Then we let go of Noel in lieu of Scott Arniel. Brassard disappeared again under Arniel, and subsequently was in another coach's doghouse. Arniel was replaced with Richards at the halfway point last year, and Brassard ended the season once again picking up his play. IIRC he recorded 29 points in his final 33 games.

So you can see how he can be a maddening player for fans. Oozes skill, but only would show up in that way every now and then, and doesn't really bring much in other facets of the games. His spikes in production came at the end of two different seasons while in the midst of two coaching changes. Enigmatic to say the least. This season he has merely been serviceable, not reaching the point production levels that we've seen, yet not in the doghouse while being a good teammate. He's a great guy, and I'm sad for him to go mostly because he seemed to want to be part of the culture change. Gave a very heartfelt interview at the end of our 2-1 OT win against Anaheim on Sunday, saying how much they wanted to get to the post-season. However, it seems like he will be a good fit in NY, and I was happy to see him have a big night tonight.

John Moore- Wonderful kid. Week to the day older than me, so for whatever reason I've always liked him. He's an intelligent person. Great at interviewing, and a very ernest and humble guy. You want players like Johnny to succeed. He has a great head on his shoulders.

He's as fluid of a skater as you'll see. He doesn't have the best mind for the game, so his skating ability really helps him. He has other great tools – he's a good passer and has improved his d-zone play leaps and bounds. He was touted as a smooth offensive defenseman early on, but he's turned his development into a capable puck mover who doesn't do much offensively, but is reliable in his own zone. Wish he would use his shot more, however. He won the hardest shot competition while he was in Kitchener (I believe he clocked in at 98 mph), but you wouldn't ever know that by watching him play because he's simply not a shooter, as nice as it was to see him score tonight.

All in all, he's a guy you want to do well, and he's got the tools and the mindset that a pro needs to be successful. Probably doesn't have top-pairing potential anymore, but certainly is a guy who won't hurt you on your 2nd pair.

Derek Dorsett- This was the biggest shocker. Half-expected Moore and Brassard to be on the move, as we have depth on defense and Brassard was simply expendable to upgrade our scoring. Dorsett on the other hand was one of the biggest locker room presences that our organization has ever had. Always played with heart, and ALWAYS stuck up for teammates. Developed a surprising scoring touch last season, and now has potential to hit 20 goals sometime in his career. It was such a shot to the gut when he went out for the season. Seemed like our team came together to win games for him in a way.

He will undoubtedly lead your team in PIMs when he returns, and could wear an "A". Our fans always thought that he took bone-headed penalties, which, yes he did, but it was always out of grit and will. He's a guy that will do anything to win, and is actually a very good penalty killer. Another guy who wanted to be here for the culture change, and it's sad to see him gone.

I am fascinated by the logistics of how Brassard and Moore made it to the game last night. If I put myself in their shoes I'd be all screwed up. Has there been any info on a timeline on when they found out and how they got to NY?

I know a lot of these details are figured out for them but where's my skates? What about my house? Who's going to feed the dog? Where do I go? Where do I stay?

They arrived at MSG at 6:50 after arriving in NY on a private jet.

- Skates can be found anywhere in MSG
- House will be there tomorrow
- Your wife can feed the dog
- You make millions. Stay in a hotel for the first night

This all started the day Scott Gomez was signed and nylander was shown the door
Think about it
No Gomez then no McD, Prust or Gaborik
Then Gaborik - after 2 40 goal sessions - turned into Brassard, Dorsett & Moore without costing any other assets at all
Thanx scotty Boy!
I am pretty sure Sather had all this figured out from the start ;)
Now his signings of Redden and Drury on the other hand kind of went in a different direction. Let us hope we do not add Brad Richards to that category in a couple years

Dumbest trade ever.

And to think I was actually beginning to respect the Rangers FO. God damn it, they just swapped Dubinsky, Anisimov, and Gaborik for Nash and a bunch of filler.

How is it that Brassard, Moore and Dorsett are "filler," yet Dubinsky and Anisimov are noteworthy players? Brassard is younger than Dubinsky and has actually posted better points per game numbers over his career (.56 to .54). Dorsett is an excellent "glue guy" that brings some much-needed grit and energy to the team. Moore is rookie first round pick. Why do you gloss over them?

I understand being upset by the trade, and there are legitimate reasons to dislike it. You statement though is just ridiculous, and smacks of someone who knows nothing about the guys we got in return.

I guess that's the biggest issue.

I only knew Brassard and Dorsett by name but had no idea what to expect from them. Never even seent hem play. Moore was not even on my radar as a talented D. I just never watch the western conference because of the timezone which means matches are played at 3 AM for me.

Does that mean I will ***** about it, like others? No. I go read the CBJ boards, look up some stats and make up my mind. I feel comfortable about this trade. What else did we want? A 1st rounder? Why? So we could draft a young gun who maybe in the future could turn out to be a star? We needed to dump salary with the upcoming RFA's and getting these 3 guys back is amazing for our depth.

Don't waste time with these guys who just complain about everything Sather does. As it stands now, we finally have a squad that can roll 4 lines. I am a happy man, despite losing one of my fav. Rangers (after Anisimov already left for Columbus last year).

I havent read all the postings but to me it all comes down to this

Nash vs Gabby - This season I would have taken Nash, last season I wouldn't be so sure....

Fact remains that we gave up Dubinsky for Dorsett (negative), Anisimov for Brassard (positive) and Erixon for More (a wash)

Slats did not do as badly as with the Pascal Dupuis to Atlanta trade......but frankly I am underwhelmed.

This is literally the definition of "Taking one for the team"

Slats and his sacrifices will not be forgotten.

I remembered Moore from his draft year, but I hadn't really checked in on the guy or given him much thought since. I was surprised to see him in the deal since I remember thinking pretty highly of him just a few years ago. I think he's a really nice addition, and could prove to be a great addition if he develops.

The Rangers have a list of young players they like from each organization. John Moore fits what the Rangers like. Size. Can skate. Moore allows the Rangers to move a D in another trade in the future. McD is up for a contract this summer. DZ and Girardi are up for deals in 2014. Staal in 2015. Can the Rangers afford all of them? You can see what the Rangers see in Moore. McIlrath. Skjei. All of them are big players. The Rangers have had good success with young D. Jim Schoenfeld does a very good job in helping them develop.

Gaborik was a very good Ranger. Two terrific years. Two not so good seasons. He seems to have lost a step. You look at Gaborik from Minnesota and in his first season with the Rangers and look at him now. He doesn't blow past players anymore. Everyone thought he was hurt in his 2nd season. He wasn't hurt. Gaborik can still shoot the puck. Even his shot seems a little off. He could beat goalies with his shot coming down the wing. That seemed to happen less and less.

In a salary cap world, I am not certain if Dubinsky for Dorsett is a negative. Dubinsky was (is) a valuable player, but at 2.5 million a year more than Dorsett...not so sure of that.

And Nash is signed long term, whereas Gabby's contract expires at the end of next year.

we love to see him regain his form even if he's playing against us next year. Quiet and respectful and certainly deserving of a great career and not to be the guy that everyone rags on for not being physical/blocking shots/intangibles and being inconsistent etc.

I don't think Dubinsky to Dorsett is as big of a downgrade as some think. In terms of offense, yes, and Dorsett is unlikely to ever be more than a 20-30 point guy. But he can kill penalties well, forecheck like a man possessed, is gritty as extra course sandpaper and is the ultimate team player. He's just a terrific guy to have around, and while he's doesn't have Dubinsky's pure talent, I think he's less "replaceable" than Dubinsky. It's why the Columbus fans were shocked and distraught over his departure.

When we acquired Brandon Prust, most of our posters didn't think too much of it. We were just psyched to lose Kotalik and Higgins. Prust turned out to be the best player in the deal and a key piece of our success. I really believe that Dorsett, when he returns, can have a similar impact.

Yes I want him to be the missing link. Dubinsky was an alround stud who would play physical and bag a puck or two and he was homegrown. I think we need to be able to hang onto our own draft picks
