Confirmed with Link: Marian Gaborik to Columbus for Brassard, J. Moore and Dorsett

Because Stepan as a #1 and Brassard as a #2 absolutely maxes out their potential. A lot is going to have to go right for that to happen.

And in a league that year after year after year proves that elite play down the middle is paramount, Im not too keen on a Stepan/Brassard bet.

This is not me advocating hanging on to Richards by any means after 2014, but the need for the type of player Brad Richards used to be will almost assuredly still be there.
Understandable, guess I think/hope there may be more to Brassard than was apparent during his time with Columbus. I agree, unless Richards really performs, and even then, I do not think it's wise, with the recapture, to hold onto him beyond the 2014 amnesty buyout period. Not sure I see the Rangers buying him out until then, if not, they get the rest of this season and next to see if Brassard can get the job done. If he surpasses Richards as Stepan appears to have done this year, maybe it all works out.

Have a feeling the organization is really banking on Lindberg to be at least a #3 center within the next two years, which really isn't that much of a stretch.

Agreed. Yet here we are.

The new additions should help, really theres nowhere to go but up.

Montreal has 40 points from 2 Dmen on the PP. The Rangers have 10, all Dmen combined. Huge problem.

I will not lie, that is a problem that needs to be addressed. Moore should help. He is better than Bickel/Eminger/Hamrlik. They need Stralman to pick up some slack. MDZ has been ice cold since the start of the season. McDonagh needs to join the rush more. And having Staal, who was actually very good offensively this season, out hurts a bit.

Still, it is unacceptable.

That's how I feel about the whole team, sans the King.

And that has to do with depth.

I feel the team has quite a bit of depth now. Especially in a year or two when there will be a clearer picture of the young players coming up.

He tied Kreider and passed Asham last night.

Moore tied Eminger and Halpern, passed Powe.

This is just hilarious.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but Rangerboy you were spot on in pulling out those quotes from JD a week or so ago. Clearly he is a big Gabby fan. Makes 100% sense in hindsight. Solid reporting.

We filled three pretty gaping holes in our lineup with this deal. Brassard brings much needed offense to our third line. Moore adds a viable option for that #6 defender spot that we've been trying to fill with a patchwork of has-been's and borderline NHL talent. Dorsett brings the elements we lost with Prust, plus he's younger and has more offense in his game. All three players come with potential upside as well. Moore could pan out as a solid 2nd pairing defender. Brassard could be a solid #2 center. Dorsett could be that momentum shifter that the best teams around the league always seem to have.

If you look at this from the perspective of us trading a 40 goal scorer for role players, it's a tough pill to swallow. However, if you take a step back and realize that Gaborik was not playing well here this year and was showing no signs of bouncing back, then it starts to look much better. Especially if these guys can realize some of their potential.

Hopefully next fall will finally be a situation where we have too much depth, as opposed to scrambling at the deadline to fill the same holes we've had for the last several years.

And when Gaborik bounces back and scores 40 goals in our divison next year we might see it differently.

Not really opposed to the trade, needed to shake up the roster and I like the pieces they got back, but we won't know if this trade was a positive anytime soon.

So is Dorsett looking good to get back by yrs end/playoffs? That is pretty important if they get in. He could cause havoc which is what they need.

it goes without saying Staal being healthy at the end of the yr is very important as well.

I am fine with this trade in hindsight. Wish they got a better pick but I like the players and I understand Gaborik was struggling, the market likely wasnt big for him and they need the cap space for next yr

Gabby likely tears it up in CB but I doubt he would of figured it out with the Rangers this yr.

I can't beleive CLB is in the diviison next yr though, that is going to be freaking nuts. Automatic rival for yrs to come. Plus they always play WSH in the playoffs , that coupled with Pitts, Philly, Isles, Debbies

Unfortunately the relationship between Torts and Gabby was so strained that something had to be done. Gabby will probably thrive in his new surroundings and I wish him the best. I appreciate the years he gave the Blueshirts, but it was time for a change for both parties.

Like many people have mentioned, this trade would seem to indicate that Torts is going nowhere anytime soon.

I do like the trade/trades because I feel like it makes them a stronger/deeper team going towards the playoffs. And as long as they have Hank (and obviously get in), they reasonable chance of going deep in the playoffs.

He might. He might not. If he doesn't bounce back then his value continues to drop while the offense continues to struggle.

Gaborik has looked very tentative to me this year. I'm not sure if he's just lost confidence due to health issues, or he's physically just lost a step. If the latter is the case then we got three solid players who are young that can help this team at least a moderate amount for the next few years in return for a one dimensional 25 goal scorer.

I know. That's why I don't mind the trade. It is made at a time when he still has high value and the return was fairly good. Especially excited to see Dorsett.

I don't like trading 1 for 3 but as stated previously, I do think Gaborik may be on the downside of his career. He is not (and in his entire time with the Rangers) was never the player he was in Minnesota. Maybe it was the pressure of New York. I don't think it was the coaching because Lemaire is Tortorella with a French accent. And I don't think it was as much of a personal blowup as some people do. To me, it's simple. There's a salary cap to deal with and he was a luxury that ultimately could not be afforded. And very possibly in the Rangers eyes, he was a declining asset and they decided to get as much value for him as they could find. Better to make the trade a year early than a year late.

This all started the day Scott Gomez was signed and nylander was shown the door
Think about it
No Gomez then no McD, Prust or Gaborik
Then Gaborik - after 2 40 goal sessions - turned into Brassard, Dorsett & Moore without costing any other assets at all
Thanx scotty Boy!
I am pretty sure Sather had all this figured out from the start ;)
Now his signings of Redden and Drury on the other hand kind of went in a different direction. Let us hope we do not add Brad Richards to that category in a couple years

So true. All it takes is money and the willingness to make mistakes.

Don't forget things like secret handshakes to get Naslund to retire and off the books. Those things always help as well.

Sather possesses both.

It's going to be very interesting next year playing in the same division. There is an obvious connection with these teams - star players, big trades, big fights (history). Columbus fans are so pumped to be moving to the East and the team has historically done well against the Eastern conference. This trade will likely be definied next year - at least for Columbus depending on Gaborik.

I've said it earlier but this trade is solid for both teams. Columbus was desperate for a high end wing and the pieces moved were redundant in Columbus. Gaborik, like Brass, Clowe and Moore, looked very good in his debut. I'm interested to see how these players fair after a few games and the adrenaline wears off from the trade. I'll be specifically interested in the connection with Brass and Torts. That concerns me (as a Brassard fan). If Brass can find some level of consistency you'll have a 50 pt player year in year out in my opinion.

One thing fans need to do is yell at him to shoot. Awesome shot but always passes it up. Good luck, see you next year.

Gaborik was great in 09-10. If he didn't get hurt,he would have scored over 50 that season. He was fooling around in practice with Henrik on breakaway drills. Henrik's skate cut Gaborik's leg. Then the Olympics came. Gaborik played not feeling 100% and he tweeked a groin. The groins weren't a big issue after the first season. He had hip surgery before leaving Minny. That surgery seemed to correct any major leg/groin issues. The Rangers weren't re-signing him next summer so they moved him.

JD was on the podcast with Jeff Marek and Puck Daddy. JD said the Rangers were discussing something else with him when the Rangers brought up Gaborik. John said the Rangers weren't moving Gaborik just to move him. McDonagh made some comments to stop coaching Pat about Moore being a fit for the Rangers because of his skating ability. The Rangers system requires the D to skate. So what were they doing with Hamrlik? At least they didn't waste 2 picks on Murray who is almost as slow as Hamrlik.

Exactly! We were't going to re-signing him after next year, and with the salary cap going down next year, it was a move that had to be done. The way I see it, we got him as a FA and he had a few solid seasons for us, and now he brought us 3 NHL ready, proven players. That is good asset management in my books, even though I know many will say it wasn't and we should have gotten more, or IF we held on to him longer (summer or next year trade deadline) we would have gotten more. However, what IF he got hurt...
There was no way we would have won anything with Gabby here, and its not his fault solely, so after some reflection I'm OK with this trade, especially since it makes this team overall better. I wish Gabby the best of luck in CLB, since he seemed like a good guy.

In the post game Tort's took one question on it. He said that Dorsett was " a ways away" from coming back. He said that would be the last report coming from him on it. We get in and hopefully we see him by at least the 2nd round. We'll see.

This. 100% this. They were able to acquire guys who fit their team and system better than Gaborik had been in his current form. It doesn't mean he is a bad player, just wasn't fitting.

In this system, you need forwards who can skate and back-check as well because the defense have the ability to jump into the play. It works both ways. Rupp gone. Gaborik gone. People say it is all about "jam", but to me, Torts wants guys who are at least passable on the back-check and can have an effect on a game in multiple ways.

I think Gabby may be entering the downside, but this is a guy who is still more than capable of netting 30 goals....if motivated. That's really the key with him, imo. And it was a main factor in his leaving which he had to sign off on by the way.

Think about it. A few days ago the Rangers were a team that intimidated nobody with two very high priced superstars floating/moping thru most games. Talk about a recipe for disrespect among your opposition.

Much of that may have been changed with two moves. It's certainly a team better equipped for the rigors of playoff hockey. At least that's what I think.

Personally I do not care of he scores a 100 goals next season as long as they are not against us it will not matter . It was the best trade Slats could have made at this point of the season after every GM saw just what kind of game or lack of it that was displayed by Gabby in the season thus far...no heart...not a team guy...and soft as toilet tissue even for a goal scorer . Phil Kessel has more toughness at the moment . He is as many have discussed...is fast on the downside .

We got back 3 pieces...that fill holes on our team that could not be filled by minor league guys or waiver wire catches . That is the most important part to remember in all of this plus we have some salary freed up...albeit not much and Brassard showed me more on the PP in one game than Gabby showed over the course of 2 seasons on it .
